Does it cause you any problems?
If you could pick a name what would it be?

@popsadaisy

Crystal?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 17/05/2019 17:32

Mine is a relatively traditional name but very much out of favour at the moment. I like it well enough, it's me and I can't imagine myself as any other name. The one thing about it that drives me insane is the fact that it is in a song title and people over a certain age think its funny to sing it whenever they meet me. Given I work in a customer facing role and wear a name badge it happens at least once a day. Drives me mad having to smile and pretend its oh so funny and witty.

lyralalala · 17/05/2019 17:38

My original first name was Starlight. Only people who want their kid to be bullied give their child a name like that. I hated it.

If an adult asked my name they thought I was being cheeky. Kids at school laughed and made up rhymes.

Thankfully my Nana persuaded my mother to give me a relatively normalish middle name. At 14 (I lived with my grandparents from 7) we moved so I started my new school using my middle name and have done ever since.

popsadaisy · 17/05/2019 17:42

@SunshineCake no!!

And

@DottieLottie1 no!!

I will give you another clue... my name is also a colour.

Pinkprincess1978 · 17/05/2019 17:43

I hate mine. It's always spelled wrong and pronounced wrongly too.

We gave our children two easy names that in theory are easy to spell but dds name has so many other variants of spelling that even though hers is the traditional (correct) spelling she does get other versions sometimes.

Today I met a 13 year old named Gemini. It brought to mind this thread and i wondered what she will think of her name when she is older. She had a very well known Irish surname.

I think my PIL really excelled themselves with the combination of his first and surnames. There are only 7 letters used between both names. So he learnt to write his name very easily and quickly, convincing his family he was a child genius (not)

Mairyhinge · 17/05/2019 18:13

Don't like mine at all, don't like the shortened version either. I hate it so much I even struggle to tell people my name! I often make up another one just so I don't have to say it!
As a child I wanted to be Jennifer.
Now I'd like to be Keely Hmm

DottieLottie1 · 17/05/2019 18:14

@popsadaisy

Amber?
Jade?

Hearthside · 17/05/2019 18:17

When i was at primary school early 80's there was 3 of us with the same name in the same class .Now you hear it and you know that person was born in the 70's .I don't really dislike it but i would not picked it myself.

Somethingoutedme · 17/05/2019 18:29

Don't mind my name but I was born overseas and when my parents gave the registrar the name, it didn't occur to them that it might be spelt differently in another country.

This was long before the trend of alternative spellings and I've spent my life having to say "my name is something, with 2 t's and 1 h.

Hated it and my DC have the traditional and easy spelling of their names.

TroysMammy · 17/05/2019 18:48

vampirethriller Trixie or Mitzi? Surely not Rover Shock

vampirethriller · 17/05/2019 18:58

TroysMammy thankfully not Rover! GrinYou're close with Mitzi.

lostlobster · 17/05/2019 19:13

Lassie? @vampirethriller

Greenandcabbagelooking · 17/05/2019 19:20

I don't massively like my name. It's long, very classic but uncommon. I thought it was boring as a teen when all my friends were called Laura, Lauren or Rebecca.

I do like the fact it is easy to spell and pronounce.

The80sweregreat · 17/05/2019 19:21

I hate my name. My surname is nice though!

DulcieRay · 17/05/2019 19:50

I used to hate it and use a nick name but now I love it. I think I needed to grow into it, a grown up name, not a teenage name, and I have now.

Pk37 · 17/05/2019 19:53

I used to dislike it but quite like it now

JugsAndSoap · 17/05/2019 20:00

I'm a Kate and I've always liked it. People can spell it, it's pronouncable in most languages and it sounds like cake.

Jamiefraserskilt · 17/05/2019 20:44

Only my parents use my given name. Everyone else uses my adaptation of it.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 17/05/2019 20:49

I hate it mainly because my sister (5yrs older) has an amazing unusual first and middle name. Both of my names were very common growing up (I'm 34). But weirdly I think my first name would make a lovely name if I had a baby now because I know nobody younger than late 20s with the name and it's actually quite pretty Confused

RangerLady · 17/05/2019 20:49

I really like my name, seems to have been pretty popular but not overwhelming since the 80s.. And recently saw it described on mumsnet as "I've never met a bad one, a decent solid name for decent people". Also once described on the Scott mills show as girls of my name always being hot. I'm not but I'll take the compliment

popsadaisy · 17/05/2019 21:16

@DottieLottie1 you got it ☺️☺️ it's Amber x

DottieLottie1 · 17/05/2019 21:16

@vampirethriller

My guesses are-

Doodles
K-9
Spot (the dog)
Pippin (come outside)

I'm i right?

DottieLottie1 · 17/05/2019 21:17

@popsadaisy 🙌🏻🙌🏻

ChimpyChops · 17/05/2019 21:20

I'm Emma. Was very popular in the 80s when I was at school. I am named after my paternal grandmother.
I don't love it or hate it, it's just my name if that makes sense.
I love that my dad named me though 💖
