Does it cause you any problems?
If you could pick a name what would it be?

I'm named after my great grandmother, growing up in the '70's no-one ever had the same name, although there was a song with it in that some kids liked to tease me with. I work in a school now and I've heard one little girl being called it recently. I'm so used to being the only one that I answered when her mum called to her Blush

DottieLottie1 · 17/05/2019 07:41

@popsadaisy

Sapphire?

NanooCov · 17/05/2019 08:22

I'm having fun trying to guess some of these names.

The one where the first three letter can be used as an insult, I keep thinking Titania (though probably not!) and for the colour (but not in English) all I can think of is Blanche! 😂

I like mine - Nicola.

NanooCov · 17/05/2019 08:23

I do wish my parents had given me a middle name though. Feels a bit boring not to have one.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 17/05/2019 08:34

I like that mine doesn't fix me within about a decade of my birth. It's never gone out of fashion - there are still a few of us around - but never been at the height of popularity either.

I don't love it, but I'm pleased my parents spared me the indignity of cringing every time I hear it!

DilliDingDillyDong · 17/05/2019 08:36

I hated mine so much, I changed it.

betweentheacts · 17/05/2019 08:38

I like my name (Amy). Relatively common 90s girl name (but not obviously of any particular time - Little Women etc); short; no real nickname. I know a few other Amys (and Aimees - I hate this spelling!) around my age but not enough that I feel like a Laura or a Sarah (no offence Lauras and Sarahs!).

InMyOwnParticularIdiom · 17/05/2019 08:43

My name is kind of spiky and suggests a taller thinner person. Really I am short and plump and would suit a name like 'Sophie Pillow-Bosom'.

EllenOlenska · 17/05/2019 08:50

Hate my name. I use a shortened version that suits me and I can live with. My OH calls me a derivative of it as a endearment.
Mainly hated the full version because my home town area accent makes it sound awful. Think Emmur instead of Emma or Juwanner instead of Joanna / 'Oll-e not Holly 😂

darkriver19886 · 17/05/2019 09:20

No i hated it and changed it as soon as I was 18. I was named after my grandmother who I didn't know and couldn't wait to get rid.

popsadaisy · 17/05/2019 09:54

@DottieLottie1 nope!!

Member984815 · 17/05/2019 10:20

@sonlypuppyfat me too and I hate when they add ie to it

Fraxion · 17/05/2019 10:27

I like my name, hate when people shorten it. One of my GP practice receptionists does it but she's so nice I don't correct her Blush.

Mine’s a jewel name but a common one. I was desperate to call my last child Peridot (Perry for short) if it was a girl but had a boy instead. I can live with it but would prefer something more unusual.

My children all have uncommon names, one has a name that there no record of anywhere as it’s a combination name. It gets mispronounced sometimes but rarely.

Another has an animal name ( not cat, wolf, Fox, bear) that I’ve never heard used before but it gets a lot of comments for how pretty it is as a name and how much it suits her.

Weedsnseeds1 · 17/05/2019 11:35

Chief Sitting Bull, Chief Crazy Horse?
@SneakyGremlins

Weedsnseeds1 · 17/05/2019 11:43

Or Crow? Cherokee? Choctaw? Commanche?

BillGiggeloe · 17/05/2019 12:08

I do love my name although it's pretty common for my age group.

Hated my middle name when I was younger but now wish I'd had that as a first name as I've done my family tree and there are so many women in my family with that name. Also so many lovely shortenings of the name.

My DD has a name that could be a shortened version of it but I wish I'd carried on the family name with her too.

MidniteScribbler · 17/05/2019 12:11

My name is Irish, and then my parents changed the spelling to make it 'easier to pronounce'. I'm a long way from Ireland, so didn't have the benefit of their understanding of Irish names. Instead, I've spent my life telling people how to pronounce it, correcting those who insist on saying it incorrectly, and spelling it out. I hated my name as a child, but I can live with it now.

When I had my child, he was given a name that is easily read and spelt.

I'm Stevie. It's fab; I love it Smile

SunshineCake · 17/05/2019 12:42

popsadaisy - Ruby?

I was one of only two with my name in a school of over 1500. I know no one else with the same name as me except for our new next door but one neighbour. I'm not happy Grin.

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 17/05/2019 13:05

My name is very much of the 60s/70s so dates me. I neither love it nor hate it, it's just my (slightly boring) name.

I was nearly called something a bit more timeless after a relative and I wish my parents had gone with that, but maybe if they had I would have found reasons to be less enthusiastic about that too!

CynthiaRothrock · 17/05/2019 13:51

Mine is the short version of a popular-ish name. (Think beth not bethany etc) very unusual for the time to register the short version.
I spent my school life being told (by teachers) that my name MUST be Bethany. One in particular refused to belive me or my mum!
Bethany, why did you not answer when i called your name?
Because my name is beth miss, not bethany.
No, thats not right what does it say on your Bc?
Beth.
No no no, it must be Bethany. Beth isn't a REAL name.
Well its my name miss.
No, it cant be. You should answer when i call your real name. I dont use nicknames.
But it is my real name.
No bethany is your real name. Beth is a nick name.
No miss it is my real name...
Rinse and repeat for 5 years!

Its not so bad now.

vampirethriller · 17/05/2019 16:12

I hate mine. I was named after a dog who had a very "dog" name. Not a human name. It got me laughed at all through school and still gets laughs today.
My sisters have both got traditional bible names, I have no idea what my parents were thinking when they chose mine.
