I just went to a toddler class with my two year old, really lovely arty (or as arty as a a toddler can be) and I saw it on the sign in form and thought it was pronounced like Niamh (had no clue how to say it so asked the mother) and just said it was a lovely name, to which I was rather abruptly told its Na-vay-uh I’m so confused!

Naveah just sounds like an edgy spelling of handcream.

Tbf it was the same years before just with different names.

Rebecca for example. Very normal name but 30 odd years ago there wasnt many around (at least in my school In london) and i remember having to spell it for people all the time.

I dont really mind made up names, the issue with this one is

  1. I have rtft and still have no idea how i would say it
  2. As someone said, in movies/lore if you do something backwards you're doing the opposite - ie channeling the devil!

Calling your DD Heaven, bit odd of youre not african (in which case totally fine) - but at least it makes sense!

Thank you! Niamh is such a pretty name, I now realise.

Some bible-basher poor woman on One Born Every Minute announced her newborn daughter was going to be called this.

Correct me if I’m wrong, because it is the early hours of the morning and I’ve been up with the babies for hours so I’m not fully functional, but in religion if an inverted cross is considered Satanic, surely an inverted Heaven would be Hell? If you’re religious the last thing you should be doing is giving your child a Satanic name 😂

Bloody Mhairi. Among my acquaintance (lowland) it's a pretty much exactly even split between the people who pronounce it Marry and the ones who pronounce it Varry. But they're all equally outraged if you get it wrong.

It's not an alternative spelling of Mairi, it's apparently the vocative form, or so I've been told. In Gaelic, mh = v in pronunciation. So Mhairi pronounced Varry is correct but it's not a different name or alternative spelling for Mairi so it really should be Mairi all the way.
