I just went to a toddler class with my two year old, really lovely arty (or as arty as a a toddler can be) and I saw it on the sign in form and thought it was pronounced like Niamh (had no clue how to say it so asked the mother) and just said it was a lovely name, to which I was rather abruptly told its Na-vay-uh I’m so confused!

Missed a trick in the subject title there OP, you've "neveah" heard of it Wink

caughtinanet · 16/05/2019 17:22

It's quite popular isn't it? There's even one in my DCs primary and it's a pretty small school.

FurrySlipperBoots · 16/05/2019 17:22

But it's 'Haevan' backwards...

tisonlymeagain · 16/05/2019 17:23

I've only ever seen it on here!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/05/2019 17:23

I think I am very old, but this unusual names things is not new. There were a few when I was at school, and more when my children were.

How do the children with these names feel about them when they are fourteen, I wonder? And have to spell them out all the time? It seems rather hard luck on them. I have had two surnames that had to be spelled out and were got wrong, and ended up changing my name by deed poll to get one that wasn't a constant niggle, but at least my parents hadn't done them to me on purpose.

I remember that Zowie Bowie changed his name to Joey when he was twelve, and I am not entirely surprised. He uses Duncan now, I think.

RedForShort · 16/05/2019 17:23

My guess world have been Nah vee (like Naveen without an n at the end). So I'd have been wrong too, but differently wrong!

gingajewel · 16/05/2019 17:26

It’s spelt nevaeh, as in heaven backwards and is pronounced ne-vay-uh. It’s not a name I like but each to their own 🤷‍♀️

nwybhs · 16/05/2019 17:28

That's because it's not a name Grin

I've never come across it. Thought it was a MN myth.

His name was always Duncan.

TurquoiseDress · 16/05/2019 17:33

I was in the park with my toddler a couple of years ago and heard a mum shouting it out to her daughter- up until that point I'd thought this name was some urban myth or pregnancy hormone fuelled madness on the baby name threads!

Then a few weeks later we unfortunately needed a trip to A&E, there was a Neveah Nevaeh there, her mum was not impressed when the triage nurse did her best to pronounce it!

Pinkyyy · 16/05/2019 17:35

I've always hated it. A name that needs an explanation is never usually a good one.

flapjackfairy · 16/05/2019 17:36

No it's a real thing. I know a 10 yr old who has it as their middle name so been around for a while now.

steff13 · 16/05/2019 17:40

My daughter has a Nevaeh in her class. I'm not a fan. Of the name, not the kid. The kid is fine.

FlyMayBe · 16/05/2019 17:41

I know someone called Niamh who pronounces it as Nee-yam

Stupid woman getting angry with you for not knowing how to pronounce a tiwkcuf name.

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 16/05/2019 17:44

When I had my daughter, the midwife coming to weigh her and do my postnatal check started to discuss names with me as DD has a classic but not currently mainstream name. The midwife said “they may as well give them the middle name “it’s heaven spelt backwards” because that’s all she ever heard - “We called her Nevaeh-it’s-heaven-spelt-backwards”

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 16/05/2019 17:47

It's quite popular fuck knows why. I've come across a few of them in recent years.

Jollymollyx · 16/05/2019 17:49

Suprised she was angry. I think there’s so many different cultures that you can’t really be shocked to hear a different sounding name though.

Haffiana · 16/05/2019 17:51

A warning to all those Mums planning on using this - you are going to be permanently angry because people will either not know how to pronounce it or will pretend to not know how to pronounce it because they hate it...

bridgetreilly · 16/05/2019 17:54

I assume she gets cross because she gets this approximately 157 times every day. Because she gave her child such a stupid name.

gettofuckthrees · 16/05/2019 17:54

@5foot5 Grin loved that!

Failureforaparent01 · 16/05/2019 18:01

I know somebody whose called their dd it but she pronounces it neevay Confused

LarkDescending · 16/05/2019 18:03

According to the ONS 2017 stats there were:

456 girls registered as Nevaeh (rank: 121)
10 girls registered as Neveah (rank: 2502=)

Plus a few hyphenated combinations.

Perhaps it's time to coin a new one for the women of the future?

"We've called her Gnorts - it's "strong", spelt backwards".
