I just went to a toddler class with my two year old, really lovely arty (or as arty as a a toddler can be) and I saw it on the sign in form and thought it was pronounced like Niamh (had no clue how to say it so asked the mother) and just said it was a lovely name, to which I was rather abruptly told its Na-vay-uh I’m so confused!

Why in God's name would you pick a name that sounds like a brand of face cream/sun lotion? Confused

Princess28 · 16/05/2019 21:35

My dad wanted to call me nevaeh and I’m nearly 40 so not a new thing (but so so glad my mum vetoed it!)

Amanduh · 16/05/2019 21:41

Ex The Only Way Is Essex turned WAG had a Nevaeh and apparently in 2010, it was the 25th most popular given name overall for all girls born in the United States in that year. Seems to have dwindled recently but every time i’m in a major city I hear one being called!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/05/2019 21:42

Its a nice name. Very pretty. Definitely a name I'd consider. If I was pregnant. Its not very popular on here, though.

AnneField · 16/05/2019 21:43

The trouble with social media is that people don't just pick up the phone and talk to each other any more. So when I met my friend for the first time in about a year and asked after her new twins, Caitlin and Xavier, how the hell was I supposed to know they were pronounced Kate-Lynne and Zavvier? Pardon me for pronouncing them Coitleen and Chavvier like you're bloody well meant to!

topcat2014 · 16/05/2019 21:44

It's a made up name, so I wouldn't worry about it..

nespressowoo · 16/05/2019 21:46

Awful name!

Arnoldthecat · 16/05/2019 21:47

its yet one of an ever growing line up of stupid pretentious names which will be a burden on the child for the rest of its life. If i grew up with that name or similar, as soon as i could legally do so id change it to something normal and traditional that the rest of the word understands.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/05/2019 21:49

Isn't it fair to say that every name was made up at some point. Names have to start somewhere, don't they.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/05/2019 21:52

I think it’s an awful name

coldlighthappier · 16/05/2019 21:58

To anyone who has said it’s not a name.... lots of children are called it, that literally makes it a name doesn’t it? And for those who don’t know how to pronounce it... have you been living under a very large rock? Fair enough saying you don’t like it but some of the people on here are just being mean and ridiculous Hmm

WildImaginings · 16/05/2019 21:58

I also know of one with Mae as her middle name..

acatcalledjohn · 16/05/2019 22:48

Is she from Xesse, @WildImaginings?

Neva, eh, Mae?!

Grin

TheLoneWolfDies · 16/05/2019 22:53

AnneField Caitlin is an irish name and kate-lynn is how you say it.. its not her fault you dont know how to say a fairly common name

Jon65 · 16/05/2019 22:58

This is a common enough name in Spain..

JustLooking2019 · 16/05/2019 23:03

My son went to primary school with a Nevaeh (pronounced Na-vey-a) I always thought it was a pretty but unusual name, never even realised it was heaven spelt backwards until I read it on MN!

Needtofindthescissors · 16/05/2019 23:04

I see someone beat me to it, but I'd have assumed that spelling "heaven" backwards meant that you were trying to summon Satan.

Purpletigers · 16/05/2019 23:11

Niamh is a lovely name ! The heaven backwards one ( can’t be bothered to try ) is the daftest name I’ve heard in a while. Haven’t heard of one near me yet. Some people just aren’t very intelligent. Choosing a daft name for their children helps you identify them from the off , so you can avoid them .

Femodene · 16/05/2019 23:12

Lonewolf, it is indeed Irish, and pronounced catchleen/cotchlin, ‘Kate lynn’ is a made up pronunciation, now popular.

frenchonion · 16/05/2019 23:14

There's a nevaeh in one of my DC class, pronounced Nev-ey-ah. But this pronunciation doesn't match the spelling! I actually don't mind it said aloud like this, but I've got such a spelling fixation and often I 'see' the spelling of words, especially names, in my mind's eye as I say them. Weird I know! So the fact the spelling doesn't match irritates my brain! She probably got pissed off because she has to explain it constantly.

TheLoneWolfDies · 16/05/2019 23:18

Femode I am Irish and have lived here all my life. Its pronounced katelynn, I know a fair few. You can say it whatever way you like but I have never met a caitlin who pronounces it that way.

CallMeRachel · 16/05/2019 23:22

I'd have assumed Nevaeh was pronounced like 'Levi' Nevi Nev (aeh)

It's actually ok as a name to look at, quite prettybut the confusion over the pronunciation as it's not a proper name is surely enough to put most sensible parents off choosing it.

The woman was narky because every single time she corrects someone, it's a reminder to her that she fucked up her daughters name. Grin

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/05/2019 23:34

It’s truly awful.

ACPC · 16/05/2019 23:46

The spelling backwards thing makes me think of schoolkids speaking in code. Harry is a Gabwab etc

Justkeeprollingalong · 16/05/2019 23:48

Bawbag?
