House Number

AIBU to worry about the number of a house that I like? It is the well known unlucky number and I know why it was thought to be unlucky. I will never have that many people to a meal!

There has been a lot of unhappiness and upset in my life and I am scared to take on what seems to be a portent of bad luck.

What would the wisdom of MN think?

I need to be educated on this because I have no idea what it has to do with house numberBlush

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 15/05/2019 16:14

Well, mine's 69 but ..... it doesn't mean anything, honest Blush

YesQueen · 15/05/2019 16:15

I live at that number Grin been here 11 years and hell hasn't broken loose yet

Keepaddingpets · 15/05/2019 16:15

I've loved at no 13 all my life. It's just a number - ignore the superstitious mumbo jumbo!!

It's considered bad luck, isn't it — to invite 13 people to dinner?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/05/2019 16:16

I think she means me Clouseau Wink

BlueMerchant · 15/05/2019 16:17

I've had bad luck in every number house I've lived in tbh. 13 wasn't actually the worst. Think 46 tipped it!

EnglishRose13 · 15/05/2019 16:18

I was born on Friday 13th.

My previous house was number 13.

My current house is the 13th house but number 14, which annoys me.

It's just a number.

boobirdblue · 15/05/2019 16:18

It's ok, as long as you didn't see a magpie when you viewed it. Or maybe read your starsign in the paper and see what that says.

Honestly it's all mumbo jumbo!

Oh! Never knew that🙈 Thanks, now I managed to google it

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 15/05/2019 16:18

There is nothing inherently unlucky about the number 13. It's just superstition.

It's not a portent of bad luck. If bad things are going to happen to you (hopefully they won't) it won't be anything to do with the number on your door.

If you really like this house don't pass it up in favour of a not so nice house with a different number. You'll just end up unhappy because you don't really like your house.

Fiveredbricks · 15/05/2019 16:19

Do streets still have #13? The building our old flat is in doesn't. I just checked and our street goes 11-15 on the odd side 🤷

OmarKhayyam · 15/05/2019 16:19

I was born on the 13th, have had many Friday 13th birthdays, I embrace the number 13 and don’t think it has bought me any bad luck itself. I’ve had some shitty things happen in my life, but who hasn’t.

It’ll be fine!

Fiveredbricks · 15/05/2019 16:20

Also OP you can reregister the house under a name instead of a number. Give it a brandnew name. Like Peach Trees or something pretty ;)

BogglesGoggles · 15/05/2019 16:20

You can always rename it if you want

isabellerossignol · 15/05/2019 16:21

I had no idea that it was meant to be bad luck to invite 13 people to a meal. Never heard of that before. Have heard general 'unlucky 13' stuff but never that.

Does bad luck only happen if you know it's bad luck? There are loads of things I didn't know were supposedly bad luck until I read them here!

Nesssie · 15/05/2019 16:26

The '13 people at table and one will die' superstition stems from the Last Supper, when 13 people dined and Jesus obviously died.

Mildmanneredmum · 15/05/2019 16:31

If you have 13 people sit down to dinner, the first one to get up will die suddenly and imminently. It's in an Agatha Christie book, so it must be true.

redwoodmazza · 15/05/2019 16:33

Our son is in the process of buying a flat this number. It's absolutely fantastic and I can't wait for him to finally exchange contracts. He doesn't care at all about the number. Neither do I.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 15/05/2019 16:34

I've lived at number 13 before and didn't think twice about it. I really wouldn't worry about it.

User02 · 15/05/2019 16:34

Fellow Mumsnetters I knew I could rely on you to talk sense into me. It is a nice house. It might even be beneficial in that others may not like the number and leave the way clear for me!
With good humour and common sense, you have made me look at this with different eyes.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 15/05/2019 16:36

You can relax OP, there is nothing unlucky about “13”. It’s made up superstition.

LittleRen · 15/05/2019 16:36

Our old house was 13, never even thought about it. We weren't unlucky. It's just a number.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/05/2019 16:36

Pretty sure that in some cultures 13 is a lucky number...

FloatingthroughSpace · 15/05/2019 16:38

We live at that number. It has been a very happy house. Anyway it isn't "really" 13 as for some reason number 9 is the first house (I think they were going to build the street longer, but then never did). So "really" it's number 5.
