House Number

AIBU to worry about the number of a house that I like? It is the well known unlucky number and I know why it was thought to be unlucky. I will never have that many people to a meal!

There has been a lot of unhappiness and upset in my life and I am scared to take on what seems to be a portent of bad luck.

What would the wisdom of MN think?

Where I grew up there were a number of streets which had 11a between 11 and 15. Bonkers, I’d be more than happy to live at a number 13.

Maybe you've had unhappiness in your life because you're looking at the number 13 the wrong way Smile

Like @FrowningFlamingo, I got married in 2013. Loads of availability because of the superstition. Two weeks later we had a blessing in DH's native country, where 13 is seen as a sign of good luck.

I'm not superstitious but 13 has certainly worked out to be a lucky number for me!

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel

Yes - we had dinner as a party of 13 for my hen do, my bridesmaid brought a stuffed toy along for the extra place setting on purpose Smile

We live at Number 13. Our house is 200 or so years old and we discovered that it was actually originally Number 7, but newer houses were slotted in between the older ones and the houses were all logically renumbered several decades ago.

We don't care - it's just a number and nothing else. The only slight annoyance is that, because so many new developments don't have a Number 13 (presumably potentially harder to sell to superstitious would-be customers), a lot of people think that we are the same house as Number 15 next door, to which we are attached. It's a different colour and, although originally identical, both houses have had a lot of changes made over the decades (centuries even) - one of them a big extension - meaning that they now look very different externally, but the number of people who apparently just don't believe that there could possibly be a Number 13.

The postman more than makes up for it, though, as we are '13 Acacia Close' and he kindly also brings us lots of post intended for (and clearly addressed to) '13 Acacia Lane' - the next road to ours (names changed to protect the neighbourhood Grin)

Thirteen is my lucky number!

The number 4 is incredibly unlucky in Chinese culture, as it sounds like the word for death. 14 is everlasting death, 24 Long lasting death.
8 is lucky as it sounds like prosperity and 9 like life
Rushing this as battery about to go Grin

Our first house was number 13. We had very few cold callers! I'd see them coming up the road and miss us out.

Streamside · 15/05/2019 22:59

I thought it was 666 and wondered could anyone have that amount of people to dinner.

Wigglesnuff · 15/05/2019 23:06

Friday the 13th has always been good for me.

Met now DH on Friday 13th
Bought first house on Friday 13th
Married DH on Friday 13th
Positive pg test on Friday 13th
Decided and put offer (accepted) in on dream house on Friday 13th

There's more but those are just off the top of my head.
