To want a Friends inconsistency thread

I have watched this WAYYY too much. But there must be others like me out there.

To start...

  • Ben disappears.
  • Rachel's dad smokes but with her smoking episodes she says she doesn't because her dad's a doctor and told her horror stories about it.

In one episode Ross talks about his parents struggling to conceive him (“They thought she was barren!”) but in another episode Jack Geller says they had to get married because he had got Judy pregnant.

Maybe she had always known she was going to struggle with fertility, PCOS or something, so even though she was young it was still a shock. Maybe that pregnancy turned out to be Ross? OR maybe it was straightforward situation of getting knocked up, she had an abortion which caused damage and doctors told her she wouldn't be able to conceive again, hence why Ross was so treasured. I agree that would be a seriously odd thing to joke about at your child's party though!

I think the Joey Sperm Donor story doesn’t stack up. In an earlier series they all know he is doing it, but in a later series they are shocked to find it out.

I also noticed the Rachel knowing Chandler when they were young thing.

What I can never understand is why her gran didn't take them in.

My theory is that she did, but Phoebe being a traumatized teenager (she had a failed adoption following her mum's death too, so must have been thoroughly messed up!) ran away and Ursula stayed a couple more years. After all if Ursula had been homeless too, however impossible she was they probably would have stuck together.

I hate that they don't have Phoebe's birth mum part of her life after a couple of episodes. Why couldn't she have been at her wedding, just in the background? Or mentioned from time to time at least! Same with her dad. It's like she was abandoned all over again.

Frank, Phoebe's brother chucks and condom (and retrieves it) from her guitar case a season or two before she finds out she has a brother.

Terry just disappears from Central Perk and Guntha goes from co-worker to owner.

There's an episode where Ross is really down because it's the anniversary of losing his virginity to Carol, Monica already knew about it and was sympathetic to him but in another episode she goes on a double date with Joey and a couple she believes are brother and sister and says she didn't know when her brother lost his virginity. Also later on Chandler says he slept with a librarian in college

The one after Chandler and Monica got married. Monica has one of the big presents on the sofa, one scene it is wrapped, the next unwrapped which happened a couple of times

The one in Vegas where Ross had put marker pen on Rachel's face on the flight, He rings the company its permanent marker pen wont come off, Rachel puts it on his face. Following day, marker pen is off

In a Thanksgiving episode Ross reveals he doesn't like ice cream but we see him eat it with Elizabeth and Marcel in early series.

Urghhh so many!

  • Rachel's birthday is apparently May 5th earlier into the show, but when she's stopped by police officer when driving in a later series, the police officer looks at the birth date on her license and says she's an aquarius!
  • Joey using air quotes at several points during the run of the show and then suddenly forgetting what they mean completely by season 9...
  • Ross says that his first time was with Carol and that she's the only person he's slept with in the first series, but then it later is mentioned that he sleeps with the dorm cleaning lady in college.
  • Rachel's name is spelt both Green and Greene at different points!

Just some of the ones I can remember.

Really want to watch Friends now though Grin

Actress who plays Estelle also plays the nurse who delivers Ben. Well I suppose She could have had changed career but still.

Re: Phoebes birth mom; apparently the plan was to have her featured more but the actress playing her (Teri Garr) had some health issues (MS I think) that meant she couldn’t be featured more.

The one when Monica makes Joey eat the whole turkey in one sitting. Why? Everyone surely has leftovers like after Christmas? Or just buy a turkey crown.

Joey saying he won’t have to learn what surrogacy means when he & Chandler are discussing the options for Monica & Chandler to have a baby. Despite Phoebe having done the exact same thing a few years earlier.

Joeys pregnant sister - never mentioned again....leading to an inconsistency in ‘Joey’ who lived with his sister who was a single parent. If one of his sisters was unmarried and a mother why did it bother him so much?

Hadn't Rachel only slept with four people while dating Ross - Barry, Paolo, someone else, Ross - and then mentions "getting under" a professor in college.

Only a minor one.

In the Thanksgiving episode where Jack says 'and we kind of guessed about the porch swing', you can clearly see the wall cut off and that it's a set.

Phoebe is a vegetarian and outspoken about cruelty to animals yet according to Rachel and Monica the thing she's always wanted is leather trousers.

Monica and Chandler have no idea they are having twins but by the very next day they have a double buggy all set up.

i think the turkey thing was more to eating it on thanksgiving rather than not liking it at all

The Rachel not knowing/knowing chandler thing always bugs me-i get they want to do flashback episodes and include them all but its annoying

One that has always annoyed me - when they go to the beach house and Monica gets the jellyfish sting. Chandler later talks about “sometimes at night I can still hear the screaming” which sounds like a normal Chandler over-reaction joke. But then Joey says “that’s because I do it through the wall to freak you out” - but there’s only been one night at the most since it happened. Always made me Angry

Well they don’t exactly live rurally with no shops! Grin it’s one of the first things they’ll have Gone out and bought along with a second crib etc. It wouldn’t take long to get a pram.

Phoebes birthday changes too.
when she first meets Frank she tells him her birthday is in Feb.
Season 10 and she has her birthday on Halloween.
