Toes out at work?

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 14/05/2019 19:52

Yes or no?

The men don’t turn up in sandals sans socks. Company dress code only mentions no flip flops.

It’s customer facing.

I can’t decide if IABU or not but I think yuck every time I see someone else’s toes at work.

Depends on the job. I teach in a city college so lots of running up and down stairs between (or sometimes even during!) lessons. I wouldn’t feel safe doing this in Birkenstocks but honestly, some of my colleagues wear six inch heels and are fine with that.

Whatever you’re comfortable with I suppose, I don’t think it’s unprofessional. We do have a male colleague who has no shame in wearing sandals fwiw.

YesQueen · 15/05/2019 10:56

I'm not even customer facing and we can't wear open toes unless it's dress down Fridays

RottnestFerry · 15/05/2019 12:21

I was brought up to understand that no toes or armpits should be exposed at work

Shock horror! My wife turned up for work in her gym gear and has changed into a spaghetti strapped summer dress and four inch heel sandals.

Obviously, she won't be able to do her job properly.

Quintella · 15/05/2019 12:24

When I occasionally have to present at a conference or to top management, then I wear smart jeans and Nike's with the T.

Back dated sanctions coming your way! Wink

MinesaPinot · 15/05/2019 12:30

I remember reading an article some time ago about Australian professional women, and how they keep cool and smart in the heat in the summer. Apparently "cool armpits and cool feet" is their mantra, by which they meant that sleeveless tops and open sandals are completely fine in the office.

PamelaX · 15/05/2019 12:31

no no no
it's completely unprofessional. I don't want to see men in flip flops or women in sandals. The main issue is that it's difficult to police. One will turn up with manicured feet, smart sandals and it would be just about ok. Then the next will turn up with manky feet, and flip flop!

For those who said it doesn't matter, my company has international clients. We would lose a lot of them if we turned up with casual clothes. They are the ones paying my commissions, so yes, I care!

Men are not allowed to wear sandals, so neither are women, problem solved.

there are many fields where I would think she is taking the piss dressed like that, or is completely unprofessional.

If she works in a beach bar, she looks fine.

starzig · 15/05/2019 12:51

I'm a scientist so not allowed.

But depending on safety, I see no problem

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 15/05/2019 12:53

I usually wear ballet flats at work in summer. Somehow wearing sandals does not feel quite right. I'm in smart casual office. I'm going to see if anyone is in sandals...

MiniMum97 · 15/05/2019 12:55

Why do the sight of toes bother you. Weird.

bluebluezoo · 15/05/2019 12:59

think it's fine if you have well groomed feet!
Moisturised and pedicured

Fuck that. I don’t “groom”- wear make up, manicure, nail polish, rarely use moisturiser. Maybe i need to cover up head to toe?

My body parts, including feet, are clean and healthy.

I hate shoes and wear flip flops all the time. Except in snow or heavy rain. Fine in my work environment.

Strugglingtodomybest · 15/05/2019 13:14

Is that to me? It's not just toes, it's the whole foot. I don't know why, don't really care to be honest, it's not the end of the world. I imagine it's something to do with an incident in childhood, it normally is. I know my fear of spiders, which is also irrational, comes from a childhood incident.

VladmirsPoutine · 15/05/2019 13:17

Nothing wrong with it in theory but not many people have pleasant looking toes - including me.

University academic. Well respected by her peers.

time and a place.
None of the Met Gala outfits bother me either, but they wouldn't be appropriate in the office either. Or in a school, or in a hospital.. and the list goes on.

What's appropriate in one work environment is not appropriate in another. Not sure why some people can't understand that.

stucknoue · 15/05/2019 13:48

Proper leather type sandals are fine but toes need to be tended to (not necessarily painted but neatly trimmed etc). Flip flops, even leather ones no, they are too casual

VladmirsPoutine · 15/05/2019 13:48

I'm cringing that someone feels it incumbent upon themselves to defend the honour of their wife's toes; and all the peer-reviewed respect they garner her.

Teddybear45 · 15/05/2019 13:51

Toes have to be covered. So it’s often d’orsay type shoes in the summer.

bluebluezoo · 15/05/2019 13:55

That’s subjective though. I don’t like pedicured feet, i find it odd that people try to “pretty up” feet with nail polish etc, especially as it means nails are left a little longer. They’re feet. Look much better natural.

What one person finds “pleasant to look at” another may not. See also slug eyebrows and duck faces.

Wear what you like, what is is comfortable, and appropriate. Don’t dress based on what others may or may not like.

Djchickpea · 15/05/2019 14:01

Gross. See also armpits

Quintella · 15/05/2019 14:12

Do people get their armpits out? I'm picturing someone walking around with their arms in the air.

bluebluezoo · 15/05/2019 14:29

Posters are talking about vest tops or strappy tops where disgusting, offensive armpits aren’t covered at all times.

I am beginning to see the pro’s in wearing a burka. Keep women’s revolting armpits/toes/ankles/whatever securely out of view.

RottnestFerry · 15/05/2019 14:38

I doubt they give sh!t about her toes (or her armpits). She is respected for her work, not what she wears.

PamelaX · 15/05/2019 14:42

no need to turn it into a female issue.

Most of us have no interest in men's toes or armpits either, and a spaghetti strapped top is inappropriate in most work environment, whichever the gender.

My lecturers were, and still are, wearing suits, and the female are dressed just as traditionally.

Technically, most of us could also turn up at work in a onesie or our pjs, picked up clean in the morning. Somehow, we don't.

gamerwidow · 15/05/2019 14:47

I have my toes out at work right now. I won’t be going round putting my bare feet on people’s chairs though or doing anything gross.
If other people don’t like it then they can direct their gaze away from them.
