Toes out at work?

Yes or no?

The men don’t turn up in sandals sans socks. Company dress code only mentions no flip flops.

It’s customer facing.

I can’t decide if IABU or not but I think yuck every time I see someone else’s toes at work.

I have always thought open toed shoes inappropriate for the workplace

e1y1 · 15/05/2019 00:23

Current job, office - not sure if allowed, we have issued uniform and footwear is smart black shoes (as in any shoes that are deemed work appropriate (and I don't think anyone has ever worn open toed "smart" shoes - wrong age group for that).

Last job, large contact centre, yes would be fine for women or men as dress code was abolished and as long clothes were smart/appropriate then no problems, but flip flops were absolutely not allowed - centre was an aircraft hangar/converted warehouse type of thing on 3 levels with open plan metal stairs, a woman fell down them due to tripping on her flip flops, broke a leg, sued and won.

DexyMidnight · 15/05/2019 01:22

IMO generally no, but smart leather sandals (think chic Italian / Greek women) are acceptable on casual Friday with jeans or a floppy skirt. Work in a law firm.

CloudyForest · 15/05/2019 02:04

I'm a senior manager of a workplace/office, and we have a very strict uniform in place for junior staff and a dress code for others. Uncovered toes would not be acceptable at my place.

The way you dress at work is a sign of your attitude and respect for your company and employer. Wearing toeless sandals is a sign that you don't really care quite frankly.

We have regular random uniform and dress code checks where staff will be inspected by a member of senior management to ensure their dress is in line with company policies and values. Sanctions will be applied for non-compliance ay my place so I'd be careful how you tread OP.

If you were as pernickety about reading what the OP actually wrote as you are about naked toes in the workplace you'd realise the OP is part of the anti-toe brigade.

P.S you sound insufferably pompous.

RiversDisguise · 15/05/2019 02:10

It's unpleasant for at least some of your colleagues and clients to look at your feet, no matter how groomed you are.

I've always worked in companies where it's unacceptable.

OldAndWornOut · 15/05/2019 02:14

It might be quite nice for some others.

RiversDisguise · 15/05/2019 02:15

Yep.... there will always be one or two very happy foot fetishists lol

CloudyForest · 15/05/2019 02:24

It doesn't matter whether people enjoy wearing sandals- they're not acceptable articles for a professional workplace environment. If I were a client visiting a supplier's premises and witnessed staff wearing sandals, they wouldn't be a supplier for very long!

The uniformed staff at the office I manage are required to wear a specific pear of approved, smart shoes unless they can produce proof of a medical issue. We also have regulations stipulating which coats etc can be worn on the work premises.

Pepperdino · 15/05/2019 02:30

It's amazing to me that some people are so unimaginative that they can't even conceive of the idea that different kinds of working environments exist. Worlds where sandals aren't met with unbridled horror, worlds where sandals are acceptable articles for a professional workplace environment. Companies with stuffy little rules and stuffy little senior managers aren't representative of all workplaces. Just figure out which kind of environment you're working in and take it from there.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 15/05/2019 02:40

I wear sandals, but am normally pedicured. I’m also no longer client facing.

Same here.

Alicewond · 15/05/2019 02:52

Don’t be toeist! Toes need their freedom too, and it doesn’t matter their size or shape they are natural and should be loved 🦶

NunoGoncalves · 15/05/2019 02:58

Was fine where I worked before I worked for myself.

I also have no weird phobia of feet or toes so it never bothered me.

Depends on the workplace!

Toe haters would not be happy in Australia then. Open toe sandals are very much the norm for work of all sorts here. You have never seen so many nail studios in your life though 😁

PregnantSea · 15/05/2019 05:40

Where I live you'd look weird if you weren't wearing flip flops or sandals to work. Everyone does it. But then again it is usually about 40°c and 100% humidity so everyone is too hot to care what shoes you're wearing.

Strugglingtodomybest · 15/05/2019 05:50

This made me laugh! What bollocks. You do realise that's just your opinion don't you?

I hate feet but still think that people should be allowed to wear what they find most comfortable on their feet. I realise that my foot phobia is my problem.

RiversDisguise · 15/05/2019 06:29

See, I agree that it is your problem Struggling, but I have personally known so many people who have an aversion to feet that I think it is quite selfish to wear open toed footwear in an office setting. It's like very tight cycling shorts for men, or very low-cut top for women. Inconsiderate as you will be making some people uncomfortable in an environment where you have to spend eight or more hours a day.

I say this as a keen barefoot runner and beach-dweller.:)

Inliverpool1 · 15/05/2019 06:36

People work better when they are comfortable, school uniforms are on there way out, what bollocks that is too. Being detained for the wrong shoes, Steve job didn’t even wear shoes half the time

Inliverpool1 · 15/05/2019 06:39

@CloudyForest really ? You’d choose the footwear as a decisive measure of a supplier vs cost/delivery/quality/sustainability? You’d last 5 minutes in business what utter rubbish

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/05/2019 06:45

I'll be wearing sandals at my customer-facing meetings today. The idea that sandals demonstrate someone is 'not serious' about their job is risible.

My feet are simply too hot in shoes, just not an option in summer.

EleanorReally · 15/05/2019 06:48

sandals yes but flip flops no,

Pepperama · 15/05/2019 06:48

Really interesting - where I work it’s such a complete non issue it’d not even occurred to me that there are workplaces where toes would be considered offensive!

EleanorReally · 15/05/2019 06:49

why the aversion to toes? Confused
