I have and would happily visit the whole of Europe, U.S. and the Caribbean and Pacific island nations (apart from New Zealand).

I visit the Phillipines and Mexico (due to family being there).

There rest of the world is of no interest to me, due to weather, attractions that aren't interesting to me, social unrest/disorder ..... or simply that I worry that the level hospitality on offer won't suit me.

BadLad · 19/05/2019 01:30

There are a few places I wouldn't go to for safety reasons, but apart from that I wouldn't say never to any place. There are some places that interest me more than others, of course. I love castles, the Romans, ancient history and so Europe interests me more than the US, for example. But that's not to say the US has nothing to offer.

It surprises me that people go to Dubai on holiday, but I enjoyed living there, and that is my retirement plan, for the winter months anyway.

manicinsomniac · 19/05/2019 02:10

Party Beach Islands - Magaluf, Majorca etc (not my taste in activities/culture/atmosphere)

Australia/New Zealand (I'd love to be in those places but couldn't cope with getting there. I'm scared of flying and not being able to make it on one tank of fuel plus 2 take offs and landings would be too much for me.)

Holiday Parks (Center Parks, Butlins etc) - I don't do organised fun!

Areas that are totally industrial, residential or run down with nothing to cater for visitors - Pontefract, Hull, Luton and similar types of places abroad.

I think I could find enough I'd enjoy about most other places to fill one holiday.

broadly speaking the Jewish and Muslim communities live quite comfortably side by side living and working together with a big mix of other communities.

I have visited and stayed in Israel for a couple of months a few times in my life. I agree it’s very European. You mention Gaza but the Palestinian residents of the West Bank also don’t live side by side Jewish, Muslim and other Israeli citizen. It’s very difficult for them to travel to and then work in Israel.

Haifa seemed to have the biggest mix of Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jewish people living side by side. I didn’t see much of a mix in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. I read an interesting book written by an English Jewish woman who decided to live in an Israeli Arab town. She discussed how Israeli Arab towns and villages get less funding for public services.

BusterGonad · 19/05/2019 03:07

Indian. I don't really want to see someone having a shit in public.

BusterGonad · 19/05/2019 03:09

India I mean!

dreichuplands · 19/05/2019 03:32

manic I'm not from Hull honestly but it has plenty for people to do. Including a stunning aquarium which is the best I have visited in the UK, a decent batch of regional museums and a historic quarter.

poster manicinsomniac Majorca is beautiful, amazing scenery food and loads to see, especially north part....

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/05/2019 08:07

To be fair, if you do visit the 90% of Mallorca that is beautiful, they put you on the same plane as all the stags and hens going to Magaluf. We had a Friday morning flight a few years ago that was horrendous. I never thought it would be possible to be that pissed and rowdy at 7 am.

FrangipaniBlue · 19/05/2019 08:19

Anywhere specifically designed for/aimed at "Brits Abroad"

Example Benidorm, Tenerife, Alicante etc etc

Wimbledonwomble · 19/05/2019 08:22

I have been on loads of UK holidays and have rarely encountered weather so bad that you can't go outside! On those rare occasions we've always found an indoor attraction, e.g. museum. caves, so not wasted. Sightseeing in boiling hot weather is not fun, would much rather do it in the rain!

Blobbyweeble · 19/05/2019 08:58

There are very few places I wouldn't go to that aren't on the FO ill advised list. There are some I probably wouldn't go to again- Blackpool being one of them.
Would like to go to Las Vegas but only for a couple of nights just to experience it.
Dubai would probably be a long way down my list but I would go for a couple of days.
I've been to Romania, it was beautiful with lovely, friendly people and was amazingly cheap.
I thought I would hate cruises but went on a river cruise and loved every minute. going on an ocean one this year to Norway but have purposely chosen a smallish ship.
Melbourne was lovely, the poster who said there is little culture in Australia has obviously never been there, an incredible city and the rest of Australia is very diverse.
Even holiday camps in the UK (like Haven) are fine in winter and generally make for a cheap holiday with kids in February.

Fair enough, but I see the point that if the weather is awful, which it could well be, even in the 'summer' - we've had an awful lot of cold rainy weather in August in recent years, making the best of it outside gets old after a day or two and most indoor attractions in the UK are expensive, in addition to most leisure activities in the UK being more expensive than abroad, it can seem like a waste of money.

It can be cheaper to go abroad than somewhere like a cottage in Cornwall, eating out, petrol, public transport all cheaper, you rarely have to pay to park and you can reliably fill your days with beach, pool, walks etc that cost very little and you won't find yourself paying £££s to get out of the rain.

I wouldn't say I would never holiday in the UK and am this year as it happens, but it is an activity holiday that is weather dependent. If the weather is against us, it is literally £1k pp down the drain and I could do the same thing abroad, probably for less, with almost zero chance of weather stopping play.

Applesbananaspears · 19/05/2019 10:30

mancearmy this is all very true. Tel Aviv is more mixed than Jerusalem. There are significant social problems inside Israel too, I would like to think that when they can get themselves a decent PM much of that will be addressed. It really has to be.

ChodeofChodeHall · 19/05/2019 10:51

Slave labour ... there's no denying there was a problem with indentured labour in the past but the UAE has majorly cleaned up its act.

Oh, yes, the slavery there is much less slave-y these days. It's so un-slave-y now that we refer to it as 'indentured labour', it's much naicer.

Jaffacakebeast · 19/05/2019 10:52

Morocco 🤢

Wimbledonwomble · 19/05/2019 11:14

@Barbaraofseville

Admittedly, most of our UK holidays have been short breaks with our main holiday being abroad. However, like you, we're staying in the UK for our main holiday this year. I've made a list of outdoor and Indoor things to do, although the outdoor one is considerably longer so will be a much better holiday if the weather is dry! Praying our luck doesn't run out this time!

That said, I do know people who regularly go abroad but have hardly seen anything of their own country which is sad. The UK has so much to offer and plenty of tourists seem keen to come here even though it's not traditionally a hot weather destination.

Skyejuly · 19/05/2019 11:25

Never ever had a problem with weather on a UK holiday.

PtarmiganBiscuit · 19/05/2019 13:06

What’s wrong with Morocco? Fez, essaouira and Marrakesh...fabulous.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 19/05/2019 13:12

@ChodeofChodeHall I didn't say indentured labour isn't awful but (a) it's largely in the past and (b) it is NOT the same thing as slavery. It's awful that people in some countries are so poor that they would willingly sign up to spend 3 years in a labour camp working 6 day weeks for what we in the West would consider little money. But they are not necessarily coerced and they are not slaves. And it's weird that people hate Dubai for providing these shitty jobs but not the likes of India or Philippines where the caste system/ prostitution/ poverty make so many people utterly desperate. That's my point.

Also genuine question: do you think if these shit jobs do not exist that the people who do them will have better lives?

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/05/2019 13:19

I think the prospect of being hassled by hawkers and dragged into shops puts a lot of people off places like Morrocco. Plus hassle from men for women there without men.

That sort of treatment would utterely ruin a holiday for me.
