I'd hate to go anywhere with such a high crime rate you need to stay in a resort all the time...seems totally pointless to me. If all you're experiencing is a beach and hotel complex you may as well be in the med.

Also would hate to go anywhere that's well known for sex tourism...grim.

PtarmiganBiscuit · 17/05/2019 15:46

I've had amazing holidays in Turkey in Istanbul and Cappadoccia.....but if I was just basing it on the half term experience in an AI that we had, that was fine but quite generic.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/05/2019 15:48

What did you do in Istanbul?

After the Mosque and the market what did you find to do?

PoorRichard · 17/05/2019 16:09

In Istanbul, I went to the Topkapi palace, the museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, the Museum of Innocence (the Orhan Pamuk one), the modern art museum, explored the little villages along the Bosphorus (Ortakoy had a lovely craft market), took the boat over to the Asian side, ate out a lot, the Dolmabahce (sp?) palace, went to some open air nightclubs on the Asian side...? I can't remember half of what we did. I loved it.

fancynancyclancy · 17/05/2019 17:05

The nightlife & food in Istanbul was amazing when i visited

mizu · 17/05/2019 17:10

We heard that Beirut was fairly expensive, like most capital cities I guess. Accommodation though seems reasonable - although having not been on holiday abroad for 12 years and our last trip being Sudan - what do I know!!!!

We are going to Lebanon for 10 days in the summer. Reasons are many but the food and the language are a couple together with it being a beautiful country with lots to see and do if you like souks and ruins and beaches.

JustDanceAddict · 17/05/2019 17:22

I’ve never heard so much shite in all my life re slagging off some of these countries you’ve never been to!
Yes, I can see why People wouldn’t be keen on Dubai, v commercialised and too hot, and not want to be hassled in Morocco (go with a man) but countries such as Australia, Israel, Mexico, Ireland are all beautiful and fascinating.
No country is perfect but if you go there you can learn some history and make an informed decision about it.

junecat · 17/05/2019 17:31

I went to Albania last year. It was definitely interesting in a good way!

TheRedBarrows · 17/05/2019 17:38

Beautiful pictures of Pakistan, MindChange . I love Pakistani food.

MsTSwift · 17/05/2019 17:42

Bolivia is the oddest country I’ve ever visited for sure. Not in a dangerous way. Went to a witches market useful if you need to buy a llama foetus to keep bad spirits away from your house

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 17/05/2019 18:10

JustDanceAddict "go with a man" if you don't want to be hassled in Morocco??? I had a nightmare of hassle there and was with my in-laws (male and female) and my husband. Horrible sexist place.

ArchieHarrison · 17/05/2019 18:15

@mrstsswift I have lots of souvenirs from that market! Long to go back as didn’t make it to Uyuni last time

Capara · 17/05/2019 18:43

So glad to see more Turkey lovers on this thread.
I was totally Shock at the poster who said she was bored to tears in Turkey! I just honestly don't get the Turkey hatred - what is it based on???

MsJuniper · 17/05/2019 19:04

So much snobbishness about Haven etc!

We don't have much spare cash and have only ever managed a few off-peak seaside weekends as a family, usually Haven or Park Resorts and they have been lovely. No need to join in the entertainment side if you don't want to, perfect bases for exploring the local area. We've been to Norfolk, Essex, Kent and Sussex and all have been great, with clean accommodation, friendly staff and good facilities.

nrpmum · 17/05/2019 19:13

I'm glad some posters have posted about countries that I would have actively avoided. Especially Pakistan and Russia. Two places that I would not have gone to, probably more out of fear thats what being an ex pad bratt does to you and have now made me seriously consider them in the future.

Hollowvictory · 17/05/2019 19:14

Not snobby about haven itself it's the other guests and their vile dogs.

MsJuniper · 17/05/2019 19:34

We've never seen or heard any trouble from other guests - last year we were at a Park Resort during the World Cup and thought there might be some rowdiness but not a bit of it. I don't recall any dogs either. They get a bad press but ime undeserved.

64632K · 17/05/2019 19:38

Russia is one place that I am planning to go to next year. Family has travelled all across Russia and the sheer stunning natural beauty and landscapes is breathtaking.

Dubai (and similar countries that treat women appallingly)
Las Vegas
Pakistan
Afghanistan
Iraq
India (due to the appalling children's rights)

WitchesGlove · 17/05/2019 22:25

BTW, to the PPs mentioning Haven, Pontins is ten times worse!

OrangeSamphire · 17/05/2019 22:34

I’d rule out war zones and the UAE.

Plenty of places I’d rather not go but with the exception of the above I’m sure I could make a good time out of pretty much anywhere as long as I’m with family or friends.

oliviaskies · 17/05/2019 23:02

Blackpool (And I live here!)

BloggersNet · 17/05/2019 23:05

Most of the world, tbh. I like Europe but that's pretty much it.

Frazzled2207 · 17/05/2019 23:21

Most of the Middle East though Jordan and Lebanon sound interesting

Pakistan, Afghanistan etc.

Alabama

having lived in all 3 I'm happy to confirm that both Poland, Spain and Japan definitely have lots of lovely bits and should never be written off!

I've been to dozens of countries and can't think of any I'd def never go to again although Barbados really was very dull and I wasn't particularly taken with Egypt either.

I'm sure parts of Turkey (as any country) are grotty but Istanbul is a fantastic city.
