How lovely MindChangeHmm By all means flounce.

Yes minds are made up due to homophobia, laws against homophobia and lack of protection for the LGBT community. Hardly trifling “other reasons” and reasons others need to be aware of.

pinkboa · 18/05/2019 10:38

The UK

Because I don't like being trapped inside on holiday...

I suffer through that for most of the year!

DizzyPigeon · 18/05/2019 11:13

The UK Because I don't like being trapped inside on holiday

Hahaha, this is clearly a wind up post. Going to have to try harder!

Gwenhwyfar · 18/05/2019 11:16

"The UK Because I don't like being trapped inside on holiday

Come on Dizzy, it's true that it can rain a lot here, even in the summer, and rain can ruin some holidays.

DizzyPigeon · 18/05/2019 11:40

Rain does not equal 'trapped inside'.

I live in one of the coldest and wettest areas of the uk. It's either a major overreaction to less than ideal weather or a wind up. I'm going with wind up due to what had gone before on the thread.

The UK rarely gets the kind of severe weather that means people should not venture outdoors.

Skyejuly · 18/05/2019 12:18

Why would you have to stay inside 🤣

ArchieHarrison · 18/05/2019 12:19

I know a premiership football WAG who takes her kids to a Haven holiday with the Sun £1 voucher each year. They love it (dad “has to“ stay home so he isn’t hassled)

Outofinspiration · 18/05/2019 14:37

Yes because getting absolutely soaked in the freezing pissing rain is what all dream holidays are made of!

Applesbananaspears · 18/05/2019 14:50

, has your son been to Tel Aviv in Israel? They have a hugely accepting and friendly gay community. Their pride week is one of the best

I agree. It’s amazing. The problem with Israel is that if people did go they might be disappointed to find that broadly speaking the Jewish and Muslim communities live quite comfortably side by side living and working together with a big mix of other communities. They might not like that it’s a modern western democracy and feels completely European. Of course there are major issues in Gaza and Netanyahu is a nutcase but it is such a wonderful country.

Scabetty · 18/05/2019 15:13

There are areas of countries I wouldn’t visit but not whole countries. Kerala appeals but many parts of India don’t. I wouldn’t go back to Egypt because both times I visited (20 years apart) I got bum pee Blush

MerryDeath · 18/05/2019 15:13

America, particularly the red states. But really the whole of America and the culture of consumption is just yuck (I have been to America)

pinkboa · 18/05/2019 16:13

Not a wind up. I go on a holiday to relax...switch off.. not to go for long walks in the rain...then have a cup of tea. I can do that on my way to and from work and still get "amazing views". Its not about how severe the weather is...persistent cloudy days and drizzle are more annoying than a strom and I've lived through hurricanes.

We went on a Scottish holiday It rained a lot and I was layered up in summer...we spent more time inside than we did outside. We go to cornwall a lot... and I dont like it, but DH's family is from there so I suck it up... wet & cold and not very nice beaches (well not my type of beach).

I'd never visit some European countries because I am black, though I would like to. I'd also never visit Israel well...

twitter.com/lunaxmeijer/status/1128728763695599617

I lived in China and loved it. Lived in S. Korea its fanatstic. Visited many countries and lived in many... and still plenty more on my list to visit.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 18/05/2019 17:42

Well, I'm going to get flamed for this but ... I live in Dubai. And while I'm not a huge fan personally, I don't think it deserves to be at the top of so many people's hate list!

To correct a few misconceptions:

  • You can go about your day completely normally as a westerner here. You don't have to adjust your wardrobe unless you are dressing like Geri Spice circa 1997 (and even then, most people probably wouldn't bat an eyelid). You can kiss your kids and walk arm in arm with your husband. You can wear swimwear on the beach. Yes, it's a Muslim country so don't neck a beer on the street or have a snog outside a mosque! But otherwise it's fine. Don't forget it's 90% ex pat population and there are over 200 nationalities living in the UAE so it's a fairly tolerant place and becoming more so every year.
  • In hotels and licensed restaurants/bars, you're perfectly fine having a drink on the beach or wherever you like. It's best not to get roaring drunk (which you probably can't afford anyway since alcohol is taxed heavily) but otherwise there's no real difference to being in a hotel in Singapore or Bali or wherever. You can eat pork and buy it in supermarkets. The local Arabic food is delicious.
  • You will not be hassled or stared at as a western woman. It's an extremely safe place. You won't even stand out - you're in the majority!
  • Emirati women are in a MUCH better position than their neighbours in Saudi. They go to uni, they drive, they work, they can divorce (of course, it's frowned on culturally but it's possible). Most choose to wear an abaya and headscarf but it's not obligatory. I work with Emiratis as well as dozens of other nationalities and have female Emirati colleagues. They are educated, well travelled, confident and I don't think they'd recognise the caricatures of their country. They will join us for a meal out at a licensed restaurant though of course they don't drink for religious reasons. I'm not going to pretend that they have absolutely full equality with men but if you're going to judge Dubai for that then you need a hell of a lot more countries on your list besides. Also don't ignore that the UAE is a positive influence on the more backward countries around it.

As for shopping malls and luxury hotels, loads of cities have these! I don't see Singapore or Hong Kong or even London getting stuck for these. If you're talking about vulgar, Cancun or Vegas is infinitely worse in my opinion (I've been to both). There's no denying it's not a major cultural hotspot but it's there if you look.

Slave labour ... there's no denying there was a problem with indentured labour in the past but the UAE has majorly cleaned up its act. It's true people come here from poorer countries on 1-3 year contracts, cheap shares accommodation and (to us) low pay - but the laws have been toughened up, salaries are paid direct into bank accounts, AC must be provided etc. And if we're going to judge here, let's ask ourselves WHY those people choose to come here? I don't see the Philippines on many people's no list, despite the rampant prostitution, incredibly poor rural economy that drives people to come to places like Dubai in desperation so they can provide for their families. I don't see the U.K. offering them a better life as we decry immigration. I've met whole families who've come out here, in full knowledge of the conditions, because it's still better than staying at home.

Anyway ... it's a long rant but my point is I totally understand why some people don't want to come here (wouldn't be high on my wish list) but if you're going to decry it for reasons of shallowness, women's rights or labour laws, you should have a hell of a lot of other places higher on the list. It is really not as black as it's painted.

Mummyshark2019 · 18/05/2019 17:47

The Czech Republic

HeronLanyon · 18/05/2019 17:48

I think it’s high on the list amongst other places of similar awfulness for gay people/women’s and human rights becUse it is so often portrayed as a dream destination and so heavily promoted.
Looks a nightmare to me and always has. And you’re right, lots of other places too.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 18/05/2019 17:49

Forgot my own list Grin

Besides obviously war torn countries, advised against by FCO etc, I would not want to visit Saudi Arabia or North Korea.

Lived in China, love South Korea and Japan. Australia was a pleasant surprise!

NicoAndTheNiners · 18/05/2019 17:55

I tend to holiday just me and dd so I would say no to anywhere in the Middle East. We went to Egypt once and not an experience I wish to repeat.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 18/05/2019 18:07

@HeronLanyon Which are these other places of similar awfulness though? And why does Dubai rank so high above them? And why Dubai more than the UAE as a whole? 🤷🏻‍♀️ It genuinely puzzles me.

All the more so as the UK is the 3rd highest source of visitors to Dubai ...

HeronLanyon · 18/05/2019 18:22

life for me other countries where being gay is illegal and/or where being a woman is even more difficult and unequal than here. Certain us states and other countries with the death penalty. Everyone will have their own determination about this. I was agreeing with you and also trying to explain why Dubai is soften the one cited.

Mosaic123 · 18/05/2019 18:38

Whitby. The restaurants are fish and chips ones, and nothing else.

Boysey45 · 18/05/2019 18:48

Yeah theres f all to do in Whitby, once you've been to the Abbey, had a walk along the front and eaten some chips theres nothing else to do.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 18/05/2019 19:12

@HeronLanyon Understood. I don't think Dubai has the cachet it used to have - and places like the Maldives have prompted the paradise image too. I suspect the MSM have something to do with it.

DizzyPigeon · 19/05/2019 00:21

Not a wind up

Ah, OK. Then it's a ridiculous reaction to less than ideal weather. Its very rare for people to be 'trapped inside' due to weather in the UK. You don't like the weather, that's entirely fair.

As for the person that said 'Yes because getting absolutely soaked in the freezing pissing rain is what all dream holidays are made of' - maybe don't holiday in the UK in January? Just a thought Wink

PoorRichard

We went with young children and they weren’t interested in museums, night life was off the table and eating as a vegetarian who has a list of allergies I always seem to end up eating chips or if I throw caution to the wind pasta.
We did visit the eastern side.

There were blocks of flats and a shop.
