the Jeremy Kyle Show guest was caused by suicide, and think that something like this happening has been a long time coming. Desperate and/or vulnerable guests publicly finding out terrible things or being berated and made to feel like shit on Jezza's shoe-even the ones who are admitting to their faults and have gone on the show voluntarily in order to get help. I'm not blaming JK as such and I know the aftercare is supposed to be fantastic but I just think sometimes the show does take it much too far in the name of entertainment.

I think we can’t, and shouldn’t, speculate. The show has rightly been taken off the air and they will do what is needed.

U2HasTheEdge · 13/05/2019 10:54

Yes, it is pretty obvious that is what it is.

Oysterbabe · 13/05/2019 10:56

I think that they really exploit the guests and some are torn to shreds. Perhaps now they realise that actions have consequences. Good riddence.

AgentProvocateur · 13/05/2019 10:56

Agree. Terribly sad whatever has happened. The people on that show seem extremely vulnerable.

Discogarden · 13/05/2019 11:00

My first thought was that a guest (and that it'd probably be a female) had been killed by another guest and that perhaps their appearance had involved DNA or lie detector results. It seems like such a big response to stop showing and filming so suddenly. They've had guests die of overdoses and the likes, also had convictions of violence from one to another and they haven't done this.
I'd be glad if it went, it's absolutely disgusting.

Bezalelle · 13/05/2019 11:09

That show should be taken off air completely. Anyone who watches it should be ashamed of themselves, quite frankly.

SnuggyBuggy · 13/05/2019 11:14

The phrase no shit Sherlock comes to mind. I remember reading in a book called The Psychopath Test how TV shows (which of course remain nameless) have a formula for identifying the type and level of mental illness for good TV guests, it was called the right kind of madness.

Springwalk · 13/05/2019 11:17

This was sadly always going to happen, I am amazed it has taken to now to be honest. I feel for the families involved, and sadly any show cashing in on the unhappiness of others should never be aired anyway.

@Aprillygirl

I agree. I do believe it IS due to being on the show that caused the person to commit suicide. Although there seems to be lots of speculation and rumour, I think that's what has happened. For ITV to pull it 'indefinitely' something seriously bad must have happened.

I think the show is AWFUL. And I am not a TV snob, coz I like Love island, BGT (though it has been a bit shit this year,) and I used to watch Big Brother til it went to Ch5 and got really crap. I also like a couple of the soaps...

I think JK is awful, because he is a bully IMO. He (and the show) take the most vulnerable in society - long term unemployed, drug addicts, alcoholics, people with a range of mental health conditions etc etc, and parade them around like circus animals. And the audience (AND people on twitter) rip the shit out of them; mocking and laughing and insulting them, calling them pondscum, benefit scroungers, chavs etc etc etc...

The show USED to be reasonably OK/passable (sometimes,) but it's nasty trash now. For some reason though, my DH likes to watch it Hmm so if we are both home, he sticks it on! I have to plug my headphones in as I cannot STAND all the screaming and shouting on it, and I think JK is a very unpleasant, goady individual who should have been sacked YEARS ago.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. I hope it is NEVER aired again. It's pure trash. I actually hate it.

Sad that something like this had to happen to get this trash off day time television. Maybe it can be replaced with something a bit more classy, so our nation isn’t exposed to dumbing down. And JK is a piece of shit too.

RebootYourEngine · 13/05/2019 11:29

Maybe now they may stop making it altogether.

GodDammitAmy · 13/05/2019 11:44

My first thought was that a guest has been killed by an abusive partner, possibly connected to what has been said on the show and that the show may form part of the prosecution. I hope I am wrong. I read something recently about the lack of after care on the show, despite what they say. Vile programme.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/05/2019 11:45

Exactly what I thought. The producers said that they were shocked and saddened by it, but I'm not sure I believe them at all.

If it had been a contestant on a fun game show who skidded on ice on the journey home after filming and was tragically killed as a result, their reactions and condolences would be 100% understandable.

However, when the whole premise of the show is to find broken, vulnerable people and then goad and humiliate them in front of a braying audience and for the purely exploitative entertainment of millions, I'd say it's just the logical extension of the standard order of things.

The programme already sails perilously close to the wind and I'm amazed that it's allowed to be aired at all, much less on one of the primary channels and in the daytime. Its MO is the televisual equivalent of beating a vulnerable person into extreme subjugation, but juuuust stopping short of the point of leaving marks on a visible part of the body. However careful you are, you can't be surprised if, eventually, a visible mark does show through.

Yes, I know the people voluntarily apply to go on the show, but I genuinely question how much capacity they all have and if they appreciate the full ramifications of the whole nasty experience. A lone elderly person might freely make the initial call responding to an advert for mobility aids, but in no way does that mean they are at fault when they're subjected to extreme scare tactics, ultra-high-pressure sales techniques and end up agreeing to pay £8,000 for a product (that may not even be suitable for their needs) worth a few hundred at most.

PamelaX · 13/05/2019 11:46

if people like you were not watching it, it would have disappeared a long time ago!

HollowTalk · 13/05/2019 11:47

Nobody on that programme gets to have a say because he shouts over them and bullies them.

Public humiliation really must be terrible. I used to think that when Trinny and Susannah used to poke and pull at women. I remember one woman nearly crying, saying, "I thought I looked quite nice." It was her teenage daughter who'd recommended her for the show and it looked like it was just done out of spite because the woman looked great to start with.

MockerstheFeManist · 13/05/2019 11:48

I remember watching the guy who died preparing for the Noel Edmonds Show on BBC1. Jumped out of a balloon basket and hit the ground smack.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 13/05/2019 11:48

I’m not going to speculate on what has caused a person’s death.

I last watched JK about ten years ago and back then it was pure bear baiting of vulnerable people. It’s criminal that it was allowed, let alone promoted as entertainment! Ducking shameful that anyone would take part in the audience of that show. I’ve no in idea if it’s still the case. I’m guessing so.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/05/2019 11:52

if people like you were not watching it, it would have disappeared a long time ago!

People like whom? I think most adults will have stumbled across this horrible programme at some time in their lives (for some reason, it always seems to be on in hospital waiting/day rooms) - and seen enough to know exactly what it's about - but I would abhor to have to live in the head of a regular viewer who enjoys tuning in to it every day.

I'll hold my hands up to happily washing completely trashy escapist TV sometimes, but if I ever catch a couple of minutes of this show when I don't have the say over what's on, I genuinely feel very dirty immediately afterwards.

JonSnowsFurCoat · 13/05/2019 11:53

I agree with pp. They do seem to have the more vulnerable people on there and JK usually rips them to shreds. Can’t believe he’s managed to stay on as long as he has. I can’t watch it at all. I’m mean, the man spits every time he talks. He’s vile, the guests are vile. It’s all vile

bigbadbadger · 13/05/2019 11:53

www.theguardian.com/media/2011/apr/22/life-after-jeremy-kyle-treatment
This article from 2011 sums it up perfectly.

Moonsick · 13/05/2019 11:55

Jeremy Kyle always reminded me of the Roman circus, jeering crowds watching the poor and vulnerable being torn to shreds for their own entertainment. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable to watch any of these sort of shows.

A big problem is the fact that there is so much manipulation behind the scenes, hyping up of the audience and the participants. And then once they have publicly meddled with someone's life, there is little to know follow up (source: friend who works for one of these programmes). The boundaries get pushed further and further to give the audience what they want.

The producers target the poor, the vulnerable, the intellectually lacking and the ugly and badly dressed as they get the best laugh and can be dehumanised the best. Just like Pop Idol auditions and similar, all those terrible singers/performers brought out for the audience to mock and laugh at. They have all been picked out of the audition lines or got through the first round of auditions. So they are hopeful and confident but get publicly humiliated for entertainment.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/05/2019 11:55

watching trashy programmes - not washing them. Maybe that was a Freudian slip in light of the end of that sentence.

Lemonsquinky · 13/05/2019 11:57

I used to watch it. But I could see how abusive it is to vulnerable people so had to stop watching. It's like a modern day version of a freak show. I hope it stops being made. I think someone has died or been seriously hurt.
