the Jeremy Kyle Show guest was caused by suicide, and think that something like this happening has been a long time coming. Desperate and/or vulnerable guests publicly finding out terrible things or being berated and made to feel like shit on Jezza's shoe-even the ones who are admitting to their faults and have gone on the show voluntarily in order to get help. I'm not blaming JK as such and I know the aftercare is supposed to be fantastic but I just think sometimes the show does take it much too far in the name of entertainment.

Car crash, bear baiting television. I don't watch it. Anyone who does is complicit.

LoafofSellotape · 13/05/2019 14:02

The show USED to be reasonably OK/passable (sometimes,) but it's nasty trash now. For some reason though, my DH likes to watch it hmm so if we are both home, he sticks it on! I have to plug my headphones in as I cannot STAND all the screaming and shouting on it, and I think JK is a very unpleasant, goady individual who should have been sacked YEARS ago

I agree, the screeching from JK himself is awful!

Iwantacookie · 13/05/2019 14:07

I used to watch it years ago but I agree with others recently it seems to be more and more about exploitation of the guests than about genuinely helping them.
Although I must admit I do watch it now and again if there's a headline I just can't get my head around.

Mrsemcgregor · 13/05/2019 14:12

This could be the reason. Very sad for all involved and too right that the show should be pulled.

Jenasaurus · 13/05/2019 14:22

It states that the show was pulled following a second contestant death so not connected to that I think.

Jenasaurus · 13/05/2019 14:24

ITV decided to suspend both filming and broadcasting with immediate effect while a serious review is conducted into the episode in question.

Mirror Online understands that Melissa's death has no connection to today's cancellation.

strawberrisc · 13/05/2019 14:24

There was a similar show (though more sensational) called the "Jenny Jones" show in America.

They brought man A out and said they had a surprise for him. The surprise was man B saying that he had a crush on him.

Man A went on to shoot man B dead as a result.

I'm really surprised given the level of vitriol between guests that it's taken over 3,000 shows for whatever has happened to happen.

TonTonMacoute · 13/05/2019 14:28

I blame the people who watch that crap.

It isn’t about helping people, it’s what George Orwell called ‘prolefeed’, although I think even he would horrified at how low we have sunkAngry

Samind · 13/05/2019 14:32

Very sad. I thought the same OP. The show is vile. He berates vulnerable people and cajoles them into saying horrible things- what was this I heard etc and they'll say; "they have a small penis" , "they never washed and we're stinking" "she was shit in bed" so it turns into a circus which all the audience laugh and take glee at.

Some of it was good like the reuniting families or rehabilitation programmes etc but for someone generally coming on the show, they were subjected to ridicule and a pantomine for the nation.

Bluestitch · 13/05/2019 14:33

My first thought was that a guest (and that it'd probably be a female) had been killed by another guest and that perhaps their appearance had involved DNA or lie detector results

This was my first thought too as there was a previous incident where a woman who was in an abusive relationship was beaten up by her partner after being on the show for lie detector results.

I haven't seen it in years but I do remember one episode where a woman who was in a new relationship was brought on the show by her ex who wanted her to do a lie detector to prove she hadn't cheated with the new man before they broke up. She refused saying her ex had a history of violence against her and they don't do those tests when there has been DV. Well JK was so aggressive and snarling at her, saying the DV was irrelevant because they weren't together anymore so why wouldn't she do the test, she must have something to hide etc. He was so clueless about the issue including that women are often more at risk after ending a relationship. It was shocking and so dangerous.

But yes from what I've been reading online it looks like this death is a suicide. Very sad.

Lovemusic33 · 13/05/2019 14:35

It’s a awful show and thank god it’s been taken down, JK is a complete tosser and the show just takes advantage of venerable people, people who are not well educated, have poor backgrounds, addictions and mental health issues. I know they chose to go on the show but they probably get offered money to do so which seems inviting. I hope it never returns.

Mrsemcgregor · 13/05/2019 14:51

Jenasaurus thank you for clarifying, very sad coincidence it seems. Sad

Burlea · 13/05/2019 14:53

This was never in the national news, a lady from my town appeared on JK's show about domestic abuse. She moved away with this person and he killed her in a very
disturbing way.

ineedaknittedhat · 13/05/2019 15:08

It's a horrible show. I hope it's pulled for good and his career ends. He's a dreadful person who exploits vulnerable people. I dunno how he sleeps at night.

ITV was always pretty ropey, but the drivel they churn out now is the bottom of the barrel. People will watch whatever is on so it's not a question of choice. Make decent shows and people will watch those instead because there's no alternative. I think the desperate scrabble for ratings is what drives TV standards lower and lower.

gamerwidow · 13/05/2019 15:12

The show has been uncomfortable viewing for years. People with obvious mental heath issues and learning difficulties berated and shamed for entertainment. It's vile and I hope it never comes back.

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 13/05/2019 15:18

I, like many others, hope it’s now off air for good, it’s fucking awful and damaging, all of it. He and the rest of the JK team are twisted and dangerous people and it’s actually shocking this is the first time a guest has died, one assumes, from appearing on the show. I have no idea if it’s a suicide or not, I wondered if it could be DV related- so many potential perpetrators must appear on that stage- but tbh it doesn’t matter at this stage how this person lost their life, just that they did.

Fingers cross that if it is taken off air it’s not immediately replaced with something just as bad or worse.

Ratonastick · 13/05/2019 15:27

Peter Gabriel wrote a satirical song called The Barry Williams Show. It’s clever in that it doesn’t tell you how it ends when the tables turn but leaves you in no doubt. But the cynicism of baiting vulnerable people to make ratings is laid out for all to see. This isn’t new, the producers and JK have just been running their luck for those ratings knowing that one day it will go too far and the music will stop. But until then there is plenty of money in exploiting the vulnerable. It’s revolting and we should be pastseeing this as entertainment.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 13/05/2019 15:32

I can’t get over how viewers still fall for Kyle’s ‘tough talking, tells it like it is, won’t be intimidated by anyone’ routine. It’s bloody easy to shout at people and tell them they’re scum and get minimal comeback if a) you’re surrounded by massive security guards and b) have the protection of everything being on camera. If he tried some of his lines in a council estate pub he’d end up with even less teeth than his average guests.

PhyllisPearce · 13/05/2019 15:54

How sad for the family concerned
I wouldn't say JK mediated in any sense of the word though

Aprillygirl · 13/05/2019 18:58

People are horrible about Jeremy Kyle but they haven't even met him. I have. He was horrible.

This post on Twitter did make me laugh Grin

Reports are that a man has committed suicide after being on the show, poor guy.

PinkiOcelot · 13/05/2019 22:49

Lol at all of the people saying how vile it is blah blah. Somebody must watch it or it wouldn’t have aired for all of these years.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 13/05/2019 23:05

I don’t see your point, Ocelot. It’s perfectly possible in a country of 57 million people for a TV show to be widely despised, yet also widely watched. I always thought Big Brother was utter tripe and was far from alone in that view, but enough people disagreed with me for it to run for a depressingly long time.

impossible · 13/05/2019 23:38

Terrible cruel show - interesting to read this: www.theguardian.com/media/2008/sep/07/itv.television

FoxFoxSierra · 13/05/2019 23:49

I'm shocked that it's taken this long for something like this to happen. That show is disgusting, I've always hated it and that smug prick presenting it. Shows like JK and the X factor are just a modern day freak show exploiting the vulnerable like they are less than human
