7 DHs from adjacent houses cycling all weekend (again)!

I’m sitting here with ice on my ankle because yesterday I twisted it during a ridiculous situation where I had to take 4 special wheels to the garage for DH’s car and he’d loaded these in my car at 5am. I couldn’t park in the garage forecourt as no space, so I had to park up the road. Then I couldn’t lift the bloody things out of the back of my car, so I just pulled two out and tried to roll them along, but the road was on an incline and the wheels took on a will of their own, like wagon wheels rolling off, One was veering into the road so I had to chase it like a lunatic and I caught the edge of my wedge sandals and twisted my ankle which is still very swollen. So that was yesterday afternoon.

DH complained to the garage that it was unacceptable that nobody they’d helped me, but he has since apologised so I’ll just put behind me, but there are repercussions now for this weekend.

We live on a street where we actually get on with lots of neighbours (rare for London) but this is mainly led by the DHs who are all cycling fanatics. This weekend they are all off to the midlands for some famous ride I’ve never heard of. There are seven of them going.

Now normally I’d be glad of the peace, but today I have -

  • Landscape gardeners coming around 8am
  • The flooring man coming at 9am
  • I need to leave at 9.30am to get DS (14) to his tutor, 20 min drive away, so I won’t be back until 12
  • DD (11) needs to be at a party for 1.30pm which a good 40 min drive, but could be more like 2 hours because they’ve closed Hammersmith Bridge and Putney and Chiswick Bridges are rammed. Also, I can’t walk to the tube and this DD has a broken toe as well
  • One DS in the midst of GCSEs and will need support / someone to practise French with / test him etc. He is working very hard, but sometimes just needs calming down or distraction. Other DS also has end of year exams starting on Mon and he needs a fair bit if input due to dyslexia.
  • 2 new kittens who I have to watch in case they get out due to gardeners leaving doors open
  • Plumbers coming at some point in the afternoon

AIBU to be a bit miffed? Of course, I know DH can’t cancel the ride now, but I feel aggravated and it’s only 7am!

Having read how crap the organisation was can we really believe that all vets were contacted prior to the event?

Most roads in Sussex don't have pavements, it is very rural!

Jemima232 · 12/05/2019 23:46

And a poor, unfortunate cyclist died too?

Maybe that was because an ambulance couldn't reach him or he was strangled in his lycra shorts

cyclingmad · 12/05/2019 23:50

Jemima232 its already been reported that emergency services were allowed through on the roads but don't let those facts get in the way.

Zofloramummy · 12/05/2019 23:50

What about carers? They weren’t allowed through

local people and animals are more important than cyclists, don't let facts get in the way of your fun.

Lifeover · 12/05/2019 23:57

The air ambulance came out to the cyclist wonder if CSM will be making a massive donation to that charity?

Cycling - yes one day! But for some people that one day could have been extraordinary- what if someone needed to get to the bedside of a dying relative. No one should be trapped in their own homes for any reason, not everyone can walk, many old people will have been trapped inside all day. The fact remains many people were put at massive and potentially dangerous disadvantage today so csm could make a massive profit.

It’s not the cyclists fault but they should consider the ethics and guck you attitude to organisation and contempt for local residents before they hand over their large entrance fee.

Every penny made by csm today should be split between local animal sanctuaries, help the aged and west mids air ambulance.

I started a thread about cyclists and got a load of abuse.

redredrobins · 13/05/2019 00:01

Jemima

Well that's egotists for you. We should know their hobby is more important than everything else.
Good to communicate with a fellow realist.

FagashJackie · 13/05/2019 00:04

Jesus that poor horse. I don't really like the idea of having a 21 year old brood mare but they tried to get her help. Poor creature.

cyclingmad · 13/05/2019 00:04

Why are you making it out like its my fun. I didn't participate in the ride thanks. Sure I cycle but that doesn't make me an arsehole selfish cyclist either.

I just don't see the problem with a one day event that closed roads, whether its for cyclists, specialist car show, fun run or charity walk. Regardless of what the event is about and whatever inconvenience I might have for one day just wouldn't bother me because its just one day and I would of planned my life to ensure it would have minimal disruption for me.

FagashJackie · 13/05/2019 00:07

this

redredrobins · 13/05/2019 00:07

not seeing that a one day event with closed roads is a problem is what makes you an arsehole selfish cyclists.

Lifeover · 13/05/2019 00:09

Cycling, I love your faith that you would have had sufficient notification through to plan your life. To some poor bed ridden person waiting to their cater who didn’t happen to use the right social media page, had a sign saying no junk mail so they didn’t get the leaflet several months ago mixed in with a load of other junk mail leaflets, yes it was just one day, just one day of wondering if the would get up, be able to use the loo, have food

cyclingmad · 13/05/2019 00:13

no it doesn't it just means I have a different perspective on events and you think noone else can have a different opinion. It doesn't make me an arsehole and it doesn't make me selfish.

I might as well call all marathon runners selfish for closing down roads, any charity runs or walks that close down parks, roads or close anything well those people are selfish arseholes too right.

I think people who drive polluting cars and contributing to poor air quality are selfish aresholes too.

cyclingmad · 13/05/2019 00:16

lifeover unless people don't read the news whatsoever or even a newspaper or just ignore their mail, various signs all over the road notifying of no parking due to road closure then you either live a very secluded life or just being ignorant of the information. The Bham velo has happened before its not like its the first time and its been reported in the local news weeks in advance. Not to mention the employers shoutl be notifying staff of such things as well.

I work in a transport company that manages the road network and trust me every bit of advance notice is given, Councillors are aware well in advancec and they have their own communication protocols. Nearby and affected residents and businesses are letter dropped, signs go up on roads in advance (have to by law with the right notice period).

Its not like they can just whip it up overnight.

redredrobins · 13/05/2019 00:20

I'm afraid that all closed road cycling events are a symptom of the townies and city dwellers attitude that the countryside is here for their enjoyment. They don't seem to realise (or care) that is somewhere that real people live and work.

Jemima232 · 13/05/2019 00:25

redredrobins

Yes. And so is London, where all the cyclists ignore red traffic lights, (unless there just happens to be a police officer around, of course.)

cyclingmad · 13/05/2019 00:26

The whole world is for everyone to enjoy, the countryside isn't off limits just because people have to work and live. What a ridiculous thing to say.

God I would hate to be so judgemental, neagtive and pessimitic like you.

that real people live and work. Because only rural people are 'real people' are you even listening to yourself. Maybe you need to broaden your thinking and horizons a bit more, live a little and have fun.

redredrobins · 13/05/2019 00:31

I'm not judgemental, negative or pessimistic, and I didn't say real people don't live in towns or cities, but I do object to them ignoring the fact that I, and my fellow countryside dwellers exist and matter just as much as they do.

redredrobins · 13/05/2019 00:35

and I have plenty of fun, whilst breathing healthy unpolluted air and enjoying peace and quiet.
This doesn't mean I don't understand city life, I lived in London for over 20 years, the countryside is much nicer though. When it's not full of selfish townie cyclists.

cyclingmad · 13/05/2019 00:50

By saying hat is somewhere real people live and work in your argument you did mean that non rural people aren't real people ... Don't run away and deny what you saidm. Just like you brandish all cyclists arseholes and selfish you brand non rural people to not be real people who live and work. You are judgemental and that's a negative trait.

I don't stereotype all ppl in that way. As a cyclist I'm all too aware that there are good and bad cyclist but I don't go round generalising all cyclists.

Anyway you carry on with your judgemental views I can't be bothered to waste any more time or energy on people like that

redredrobins · 13/05/2019 00:56

Just because I said real people live in the countryside doesn't mean I don't think people from towns and cities are real people, it means that I believe that residents of towns and cities forget that real people also live in the countryside.
Comprehension a problem for you?

Zofloramummy · 13/05/2019 00:57

Cycling you haven’t once addressed the difficulties faced by vulnerable people reliant on services for their basic needs being met when the roads are closed. What do you think about that? If it was your grandparent who was stuck in bed all day without anyone to wash, toilet or provide food for them. Is that fair?

echt · 13/05/2019 01:11

Yes. And so is London, where all the cyclists ignore red traffic lights, (unless there just happens to be a police officer around, of course.)

You know this do you, Jemima232 All of them?
