I’m sitting here with ice on my ankle because yesterday I twisted it during a ridiculous situation where I had to take 4 special wheels to the garage for DH’s car and he’d loaded these in my car at 5am. I couldn’t park in the garage forecourt as no space, so I had to park up the road. Then I couldn’t lift the bloody things out of the back of my car, so I just pulled two out and tried to roll them along, but the road was on an incline and the wheels took on a will of their own, like wagon wheels rolling off, One was veering into the road so I had to chase it like a lunatic and I caught the edge of my wedge sandals and twisted my ankle which is still very swollen. So that was yesterday afternoon.

DH complained to the garage that it was unacceptable that nobody they’d helped me, but he has since apologised so I’ll just put behind me, but there are repercussions now for this weekend.

We live on a street where we actually get on with lots of neighbours (rare for London) but this is mainly led by the DHs who are all cycling fanatics. This weekend they are all off to the midlands for some famous ride I’ve never heard of. There are seven of them going.

Now normally I’d be glad of the peace, but today I have -

  • Landscape gardeners coming around 8am
  • The flooring man coming at 9am
  • I need to leave at 9.30am to get DS (14) to his tutor, 20 min drive away, so I won’t be back until 12
  • DD (11) needs to be at a party for 1.30pm which a good 40 min drive, but could be more like 2 hours because they’ve closed Hammersmith Bridge and Putney and Chiswick Bridges are rammed. Also, I can’t walk to the tube and this DD has a broken toe as well
  • One DS in the midst of GCSEs and will need support / someone to practise French with / test him etc. He is working very hard, but sometimes just needs calming down or distraction. Other DS also has end of year exams starting on Mon and he needs a fair bit if input due to dyslexia.
  • 2 new kittens who I have to watch in case they get out due to gardeners leaving doors open
  • Plumbers coming at some point in the afternoon

AIBU to be a bit miffed? Of course, I know DH can’t cancel the ride now, but I feel aggravated and it’s only 7am!

I have lived in both an it wouldnt bother me cos its just one day in an entire year and I think those events are great for local areas bringing people and money in the area.

BlueSkiesLies · 12/05/2019 23:03

“Oh maaaa gaaaaawwwwd people were trapped in their culdesacs”

Get over yourself.

It’s one day. With plenty of notice.

I expect many of these anti cycling women on here are plodding away at C25K and one day might quite like to run a closed road 10k or even a half or full marathon.

The anti-cycling venom is pretty distasteful.

redredrobins · 12/05/2019 23:04

We don't want your people and the money doesn't compensate for being effectively imprisoned in our homes.

specterlitt · 12/05/2019 23:04

I had to stop and ask why you stated it's rare for neighbours to get along in London - it is certainly not. Hmm

UrsulaPandress · 12/05/2019 23:07

Blueskies

A mare and foal died because the vet could not get to them because of the road closures.

So piss off.

cyclingmad · 12/05/2019 23:08

BlueSkiesLies haha thank god for someone else with some common sense. It is ridiculous the whole trapped in my house for one day.

Do people never stay at home not even for a whole day without leaving.

cyclingmad · 12/05/2019 23:09

redredrobins

Oh please you are not imprisoned in your house, you can leave you know, walk out the front foor andwalk to the end of the road or your garden since you live rurally you will have one of those!

cyclingmad · 12/05/2019 23:09

UrsulaPandress

A cyclist died to but you know, noone wants to mention that do they, lets just focus on the horses only.

Lifeover · 12/05/2019 23:10

Absolute fucking shambles. Carers unable to reach vulnerable people some absolute self important cunt of a human refusing access to a vet so someone had to watch their horse bleed to death, route poorly communicated. Roads closed that were supposed to be open, roads closed before advertised time, people not getting to work, literally unable to get there, most people could only get places using the motorway great if you can’t use motorway - one areas access to motorway blocked. No diversions, stewards who seemed mainly there to watch a race rather than help hapless motorists.

Tell your DH he’s a twat for leaving you in your state and for handing over £75 to csm active limited who failed to prevent a poor animal needlessly suffering, who left vulnerable people without carers, people trapped in their homes. Benefited the economy my arse. No one could get anywhere to spend anything - petrol stations prob did well with people having to refuel!

redredrobins · 12/05/2019 23:11

Yes we stay at home sometimes, when we want to, we don't want to be forced to so bloody cyclists can ride on closed roads.
Why don't you just stay home instead of disrupting other peoples lives, selfish of you or what. Bloody egotist.

UrsulaPandress · 12/05/2019 23:13

The cyclist died presumably doing something they wanted to do.

The horse died because the cyclists were doing what they wanted to do.

redredrobins · 12/05/2019 23:14

Well said Ursula.
But of course only the cyclists matter.

Zofloramummy · 12/05/2019 23:15

Actually that’s a really good point about carers not being able to get to vulnerable people in the community.

Lifeover · 12/05/2019 23:15

Cyclingmad, very sad for the cyclist but he presumably didn’t die because of poor organisation the horse owner was not involved in the event it had to watch her horse bleed to death because can active could not get their official to let the vet through in time. The company has responded to a complaint saying the bet should have known what to do

OrchidInTheSun · 12/05/2019 23:15

God cyclists really are arseholes

Zofloramummy · 12/05/2019 23:16

What should the vet have done? Flown?

Lifeover · 12/05/2019 23:18

Zoflora lots of carers on our local
Facebook page saying they received no communication and first they knew of it was being faced with roadblocks when they were already extremely time pressured.

Zofloramummy · 12/05/2019 23:20

That’s atrocious, the level of care needs of many people in the community means that people will have been left without means to get a drink, a meal and I’m sorry to say sat in their own urine and faeces for most of the day. That is not acceptable

Lifeover · 12/05/2019 23:22

Zoflora, apparently they had written to all vets to tell them what to do and could they have the name of the vet to make sure they received their communication, basically trying to blame the vet.

I’ve heard the horse was a brood mare producing championship show jumpers. I hope the owner sues csm active for every penny of the profit they have made today.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 12/05/2019 23:24

The anti-cycling venom is pretty distasteful

I am a cyclist . But I don’t except people’s lives , roads and weekends to be shut down because of my hobby /mode of transport

I remember it took me 4 hours of hell to drive home once due to that Surrey race . No warning !

And now a horse dies because a hobby was deemed as being more important

Fuck that . That’s really upset me

cyclingmad · 12/05/2019 23:30

Not all cyclists are arseholes stop brandsihing every cyclist the same.

The roads aren't owned by car drivers who have priority to use the roads all the time every single day, the organisers applied to close the roads and it was granted.

Why don't you just stay home instead of disrupting other peoples lives, selfish of you or what.

Your equally selfish for wanting to be able to drive 365 days of the year. I think its less selfish of the cyclists takign part cos its one day! Conversely cyclists would think your more selfish because you can't even give up one day and to top it off you pollute the air 365 days a year, pretty selfish of you.

UrsulaPandress · 12/05/2019 23:33

Cyclists can use the roads every single day can't they?

redredrobins · 12/05/2019 23:34

Velo south 2018 if it hadn't been cancelled also would have banned local cyclists, walkers, buses as well as cars.
I said this earlier but you decided to ignore it.
NOT JUST CARS got it now?

Lifeover · 12/05/2019 23:41

Cyclingmad, can’t you see though drivers don’t stop cyclists going on the road, they don’t prevent thousands of people being able to leave their homes, to go to work, visit and look after sick relatives, get to kids birthday parties they don’t prevent carers reaching vulnerable people, they don’t stop vets getting to mares bleeding to death. To be fair it was the absolutely shot organisation of csm active who really didn’t give a fuck about the people so put out sometimes to absolutely catastrophic ends so they could make their £75 per rider.

cyclingmad · 12/05/2019 23:44

It's an event obviously you have to take part to be a part of it I am not ignoring you.

Its one bloody day sseriously one day! And the pavements are closed you can still walk along them just like other events and there are designated crossing points along the route.

You just hate cyclists at the end of the day and thats your perogative but I prefer to be more open minded and accepting that one off events such as these are great to have because what a boring world it would be without them.
