Bit of a worrier when it comes to health. I’ve found a small lump in the side of my neck, feels like a bean. Probably a gland but I’m not ill at all not have I been lately. It’s not sore. I’ve got a Dr’s appointment for Monday but I will worry silly til then. Please talk me down a bit!

I once found one on the back of my neck and panicked - then found another and panicked even more!

I went to the GP and it was my lymph nodes, I didn't feel ill either and had no idea why they had suddenly come up. They went back down eventually.

Purpleartichoke · 09/05/2019 23:07

Yep. Infected lymph node. Round of steroids cleared it right up

Fannydango · 09/05/2019 23:10

Purple, did it hurt then, if it was infected?

Do you think it’ll just be a case of me having to wait and see if it goes down?

I had one. Back of my neck along hairline. It was removed surgically and found to be benign. Shortly afterwards i had to have the nearest wisdom tooth out so they put it down to that

Fannydango · 09/05/2019 23:16

You had to have a lymph node removed??

My bloke had a huge lump at the side of his neck his mum nagged him for 13 YEARS to get it checked out-he did and had a small op to remove it

RaspberryBubblegum · 09/05/2019 23:17

Could be a cyst? My dad had one growing on the back of his neck when I was younger. He told us it was his second brain 😂

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 09/05/2019 23:18

Not on neck but on groin. Lump about the size of a large grape. Appeared one day. Doctor not concerned. Went away after a few weeks.

Still healthy 18 years later so it can’t have been too bad!

Whatisgoingonwithmylife · 09/05/2019 23:19

I’ve got one! Swollen gland that never fully went back to original size! Don’t worry OP Flowers

Fannydango · 09/05/2019 23:22

Thank you all. I’m hoping the Dr will know what it is just by feeling it and that I won’t have to wait and see if it goes away/ have a biopsy - I’m awful with stuff like that. I would literally google myself into a frenzy waiting for the results!Blush

Me too. Had one on back of neck, then in armpit, on rib cage and another one on neck. They also were diagnosed as swollen lymph nodes and just went back to normal size again after a while.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 09/05/2019 23:28

I wont read this thread due to high levels of health anxiety but my brother had a couple the doctor found, even had symptoms, saw a specialist... it was a lymph node

RandomMess · 09/05/2019 23:28

DD has this, just the one was large for several weeks GP referred to ENT clinic special service be seen within 2 weeks. Bloods taken that day.

Then got HUGE she couldn't really moved her neck, urgent GP seen at ENT within 2 days. Did biopsies and scans of every kind, we named him as was clearly visible from distance away.

He gradually went down and seems to have gone and hopefully will get discharged next week.

I won't lie it was scary but ultimately I think the biopsy made her immune system realise it needed to deal with it as the next day was when it started to get better. ENT don't really what happened but sinister stuff has been ruled out and it's gone 🤷🏽‍♀️

Redskyatnight88 · 09/05/2019 23:30

I had one, got sent to ENT by GP, ENT referred me for a biopsy and by the time biopsy appointment came it had almost disappeared. It was quite a large lump and then disappeared, the consultant said it happens!

ALittleBitofVitriol · 09/05/2019 23:32

Yep. Turned out to be an infection from acne... gross! Blush

PineapplesandtheGovernment · 09/05/2019 23:33

Dd had this. We saw the GP on the Wed and her appointment came through for that Saturday. Given it was NHS the speed of it concerned me. Turned out it was an infected cyst.

PineapplesandtheGovernment · 09/05/2019 23:34

Meant to say the appointment was for an ultrasound scan.

wobblebot · 09/05/2019 23:38

DS8 has exactly what you described. It's a lymph node. GP doesn't want to intervene as it's not changing but will monitor it.

chuntersalot · 09/05/2019 23:54

Is it soft or hard?

I had a lipoma on the side and right across the back of my neck. It was massive and mostly soft, movable and painless as a lipoma should be. There was a small hard lump in amongst it too. Most lipomas are less than 5 cm so your pea size lump falls in that range.

Lipomas are benign. I had mine removed only because of the size, if had been a regular sized one I probably would not have been offered any treatment options.

WeeWeed · 10/05/2019 00:23

Mine turned out to be a small cyst. I thought it was a lymph node but the Dr explained that it couldn't be as it was movable.

managedmis · 10/05/2019 00:32

I can answer this one!

I recently had shingles and had a definite pea sized lump in my neck. Totally round, a bump. Doc said it was a swollen lymph node due to the shingles. She said it would go away after 6 weeks : it did.

Maybe you have shingles?

managedmis · 10/05/2019 00:34

Mine felt exactly like a bean by the way

Maybe 3/4 inches below my ears, then an inch toward the centre of my neck

managedmis · 10/05/2019 00:36

Fwiw : I didn't feel sick etc and didn't realise I had shingles till doc said so. Only other symptom was small patch of eczema like rash on base of hairline.

Sorry for multiple posts.

0DimSumMum0 · 10/05/2019 00:44

Yes I had a huge one after my first pregnancy. It didn't go down for months and months but eventually did on it's own. I think as long as you can move it around it's a good sign.
