Mostly posting for traffic, but I'm getting really fed up of the state of the skin on my hands.

I can get this dry, horrible, sore skin anywhere and it usually flares up on my neck, face and hands. Have been prescribed creams that clear up my neck and face, but not my hands.

My fingers feel like they are burning, it's awful, so sore and ugly Sad

I've tried prescribed steroids etc but the only thing that eases my hands is Eumovate from over the counter.

EsmesRedPetticoat · 07/05/2019 22:00

Have you tried O’Keefes? [https://www.superdrug.com/Skin/Body-Care/Dry-Skin/O'Keeffe's-Working-Hands-96gm/p/704752?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjw2cTmBRAVEiwA8YMgzd1gtTBh64NaOoj2fwEh9DUgwRLYkmNtl4cWgTJ_BjAzd5RncVOGwRoCmLQQAvD_BwE&TSPD_101_R0=08857a9db1ab200004349a5c25a24c1ffb1f21dc307a53dfb4f32e9193ffa1d6e7ad1eb410daeaa508fd656da51430008699452339c89e52ebb05d49907f6a91a695e234940c3817fe36c981dd3500acf2286b9847cccea0dc85d5d1788bf706]
I get very dry skin on some parts of my fingers and it often splits and flakes. This is the only thing that really makes a difference when it does.

buttermilkwaffles · 07/05/2019 22:00

Have you tried the French brand Mixa? Really helped my dry hands which were dry and had cracked in thin lines (a bit like paper cuts and quite painful). You want the one in the orange tube (intensive repair I think it's called). Makes your hands smell nice too. Should be available in the UK I think?

Solasum · 07/05/2019 22:01

Steroid creams as prescribed by a GP are usually woefully inadequate strength wise. Get a dermatology referral so you can get the big guns.

Protopic is also worth a try

StealthPolarBear · 07/05/2019 22:01

Germolene overnight and baby bum cream in the day. Actually at the moment I'm using zinc castor which is really good. I have big standard dry hands though, not sure what's yours is

IndigoSpritz · 07/05/2019 22:02

Epaderm cream might help. You can only buy it in pharmacies. Not cheap but a little goes a long way.

ImLizawithaZ · 07/05/2019 22:03

Doublebase emollient wash gel and diprobase have really helped my hands.

OxeyeDaisy · 07/05/2019 22:03

I used to get one really bad dry cracked hand. To the point it would dry up crack and bleed.

Tried various different creams from dr nothing seemed to help.

Turns out I have an allergy to Aussie shampoo and conditioner. Well something in it anyway.

Adelino · 07/05/2019 22:03

Udder cream. Cheap and brilliant. It was recommended by an oncologist when my mum was on chemo.

buttermilkwaffles · 07/05/2019 22:05

Pic (I think Sainsbury's sell it?)

Surely to hell there is something that will help my hands!!
tartandreams · 07/05/2019 22:05

Thank you for all your suggestions! This has been an ongoing problem for a long time, it used to just flare up in winter, but winter has been and gone and my hands are still in this state!

I have tried o keefes, snow fire, cream from lush, Vaseline intensive care, steroid creams for the GP Sad

Not an amazing picture but four days ago my hands were bleeding, scabby and oozing with really deep black cracks. I've mixed a tiny bit of hydrocortisone with aveeno and it's been amazing so far.
Make sure you're wearing gloves for washing up etc. Are you wringing your hands in your sleep?

tartandreams · 07/05/2019 22:07

@KnobOfStork my hands are always in water as I bake a lot, so that's probably the main culprit

Hemp hand cream from body shop is amazing!!

MrsTommyBanks · 07/05/2019 22:10

I feel your pain. Hawthorne hand cream from The Body Shop. It's like a magic potion.

PickAChew · 07/05/2019 22:11

I keep mine at bay by using flexitol. It's my knuckles and thumb tips that have a tendency to split bt the flexitol keeps the skin supple, even when it's had a lot of hammering.

Nacreous · 07/05/2019 22:11

Wearing rubber gloves all the time you use any cleaning products is another key thing for helping them to heal, I've found.

Can you cut down the baking (or use implements more if you often use your hands for rubbing in etc?,) To reduce handwashing while they get a chance to heal?

My friend with OCD used to have cracked skin that never healed from too much handwashing.

timtam23 · 07/05/2019 22:11

Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream, this clears up my dry cracked hands in a few days. I also have a pair of cotton gloves which I wear overnight with a thick layer of handcream underneath. DH thinks this is hilarious but it really works. I've also had good results from an Australian brand of cream for very dry cracked heels (but works just as well on hands) I think Scholl does a similar one in UK

tartandreams · 07/05/2019 22:12

@Nacreous baking is my job unfortunately, I've been colouring a lot of icing recently, I really think I'm going to have to get some gloves!

Mixa cream is good. Sainsbury no longer stock it but Amazon do. I also found Dermalex creams to be extremely good although ££ - I used my DS eczema one but there is also ones especially for hand irritation. I also wear cotton gloves overnight

Amibeingcrazy · 07/05/2019 22:17

The best thing I have ever used is Skin food it’s in a green tube you can get it online or in Holland and Barratt. I swear by it. have awful allergies to the point of peeling flaking skin and blister like rashes and this is like magic cream.

pastyballbag · 07/05/2019 22:20

Cotton gloves with a thick layer of Vaseline overnight

FloatingthroughSpace · 07/05/2019 22:22

My dh has had a terrible flare-up on his hands and had 4 rounds of antibiotics to try and sort the repeat infections. The thing that has really helped has been "exeskin" by ultra bee.

PrincessCessy · 07/05/2019 22:23

I’ve tried everything mentioned here and still have the same 😭😭😭
