To ask for your Eighties memories

sadsack78 · 06/05/2019 23:13

Hi! I'm starting a project based on my mum's memories of being a teen/ young woman in Eighties Glasgow, and would be delighted if anyone who lived there at the time would share any memories or stories. Especially about what you wore, the music you liked, your memories of the city at the time.
This thread is also open to anyone who lived elsewhere in the UK and fancies sharing what their Eighties were like! Thanks everybody, I can smell the Cacharel LouLou from here grin

I remember the Garden Festival, we got taken by the school. We weren’t allowed on the big rollercoaster unless your parent came as a helper and took you on. 20 years later I worked on the site of the festival as I worked at STV on Pacific quay and there are still the old tram tracks that I remember from that day out with primary school.

sadsack78 · 06/05/2019 23:19

Thanks so much, Likethebattle! Smile

London:

Remember having an electric meter that my dad topped up with 50p pieces. We knew how to break it open so you could reuse the 50p

The Guy coming round with the calor? gas cylinders so we could use the gas when the electricity went out

80s cartoons on television: Dungeons and dragons, Heman, Dogtalian, Inspector gadget loved it!!

I had a fake multitoned acrylic cardigan. Everyone had them they were gross but we all thought they were great.

Legwarmers!!

sonlypuppyfat · 06/05/2019 23:23

I used to have permed hair and I used to dry my hair with a big diffuser on my hairdryer. My hair would be huge with so much hairspray it would be crunchy

janeybumtum · 06/05/2019 23:24

In the 80s I remember the milkman's truck coming round and the milk in glass bottles, then we left them out to be taken back.

I remember kids toys were much nicer then.

Sending faxes

Dior poison perfume

Dark green velvet evening gowns with shoulder pads

Women with big hair, my mum used so much hairspray before going out I couldn't breathe

Having people round for a fondue was sophisticated

Sofas and curtains with floral patterns all over them

Very patterned crockery sets on display in wooden cabinets

sadsack78 · 06/05/2019 23:30

Thanks everyone! My mum is nodding at all of these. Especially the hairspray, which she is still partial to Grin

Wham (need I say more?)
Early Madonna - fingerless lace gloves
(Avon's finest) pink and yellow eyeshadow with electric blue mascara.
Ra ra skirts and leg warmers.
The miners strike. Not popular where I came from but definitely developed my early understanding of politics, belief in socialism and hatred of Margaret Thatcher.

Try to get hold of a book called "One Day for Life" on Amazon or eBay. It is essentially full of photographs taken by the public of their everyday lives on one day in Summer 1986. Will probably trigger some memories for your mum.

EmeraldShamrock · 07/05/2019 00:26

I was young in the 80's. I remember making leg warmers and a scrunchy, cutting the feet off dads woolly socks. trying to recreate flash dance. I remember my big brother and his mates break dancing on a sheet on lino for hours on the street. The rope from a lampposts swings, sweets were rare and you ate what you were offered.
Blockbuster's.
Forty coats.
Everybody smoked.

EmeraldShamrock · 07/05/2019 00:26

I was fucking gorgeous

Papergirl1968 · 07/05/2019 00:31

I was a teen in the 80s, not Glasgow though.
Wham, Duran Duran, Spandeau Ballet, were huge. There were albums and singles, records or tapes.
I used to put loads of mousse in my hair and dry it upside down.
We had perms.
Top of the Pops on Thursday evenings was must see tv, and listening to the charts on radio one on sundays 5pm to 7pm. Dallas and dynasty were very popular on tv, and neighbours had just started.
C&A was the Primark of the 80s, for cheap-ish fashion, along with Chelsea Girl and Etam, and Dorothy Perkins.
Radio one roadshows were held in the summer, at the seaside and places like city parks. Radio one DJs has a huge following themselves - my favourite was Gary Davies.

Reasonstobeearful · 07/05/2019 00:32

Yy to lots of these!

Faxes! Used to be quite common to send them to a phone line, either because someone had given you the wrong number or because the line was used for both fax and phone and they hadn't switched it over before you sent it. Sometimes you could hear people answering as your fruitless fax failed to go through. One time I was faxing somewhere in Germany and got an automated message down the line saying something about "Anschluss". My boss said "what on earth did you key in? Deutschland uber alles?" and we all pissed ourselves laughing and then got really paranoid that they'd heard us.

HelenaDove · 07/05/2019 00:41
