To ask for your Eighties memories

sadsack78 · 06/05/2019 23:13

Hi! I'm starting a project based on my mum's memories of being a teen/ young woman in Eighties Glasgow, and would be delighted if anyone who lived there at the time would share any memories or stories. Especially about what you wore, the music you liked, your memories of the city at the time.
This thread is also open to anyone who lived elsewhere in the UK and fancies sharing what their Eighties were like! Thanks everybody, I can smell the Cacharel LouLou from here grin

Shaders and Toners! Of course!

This thread is fair bringing back memories for me! I remember the Garden Festival, it was fantastic. A couple of years later it was The Big Day concert. My friend was a student at Glasgow Uni and we all met up at her flat beforehand which happened to be one of the lovely flats on the Garden Festival site. We then walked to the gig and I was wearing skin tight jeans that zipped up the back - they split down the seam and my arse was on show. Tied someone's jumper round my waist and jumped into the first clothes shop we came across and came out wearing a pair of lilac skinny jeans.

LittleAndOften · 10/05/2019 20:05

@Usuallyinthemiddle I think so. I had dumbbells and a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon on a stick!

Usuallyinthemiddle · 10/05/2019 20:10

It might have been a ribbon now I think of it...

Calling the operator and saying ‘is there someone on the line’ , and when they said yes, answering with ‘your better get off, there’s a train coming’

Ah, yes! There's likely a specialist 'home for the bewildered' somewhere whose residents consist solely of trembling former central BT telephone operators - and any use of the triggering words 'line' and 'train' is strictly forbidden Grin Grin Grin

NoSauce · 10/05/2019 20:18

Fab thread!

Yes to many of the things mentioned. Me and my best friend were obsessed with New Order and dressed like Gillian Gilbert. We used to raid her mums wardrobe for her pleated skirts and lacey tops. Thought we were the bees knees.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/05/2019 20:20

The All Aboard children's record that was played at every party

Oh, yes!!! It seems like such a different world from now, where even the youngest toddlers only seem to know the latest pop songs. Mention the Laughing Policeman or Nellie the Elephant and they would truly believe that you'd completely lost your mind. Still, Peter Sellers impersonating a stereotypical Indian doctor is probably left right back where it was....

Black Levi 501s purchased from Geordie Jeans !
Sunderland :
The miners strike bringing huge disruption and poverty to the area. It felt like we were written off in the North East
Shipyards closing too
My music was the Smiths , Cure, New Order and later the pure pure joy of Madchester bands. I still play The Stone Roses album at least once a week.
Anáis Anáis , Lou Lou , Poison
Twilight teaser , Sunsilk De Parfum, Impulse , Vidal Sassoon 3 step shampoo , country born gel and wash n go
Gerry Adams and Martin McGuiness voiced by actors on TV.
Dallas and Dynasty were the ultimate in glamour and intrigue
Getting our first VCR.

BGD2012 · 10/05/2019 20:24

Poison and LuLu perfumes.
Putting money in the electric meter and the back of the tv.
The milkman and coalman.
The 80s band that stood the test of time are The Human League, lots of their music is sampled. Phil Oakey probably had the most memorable haircut of the 80s. I loved Duran Duran.
Madonna.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 10/05/2019 20:25

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll I still remember Oranges and Lemons being the highlight of the party because you got to chop off someone's head off Grin

You don't hear that song these days...

LittleAndOften · 10/05/2019 20:32

Was anyone else taken to C&A to choose their party frock?

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 10/05/2019 20:42

Faversham, Kent
Buying batwing jumpers from the market - I had a ceruse one and a turquoise and black one with silver thread running through it. It was my pride and joy!
Plastic handbags with holes in, that I think popped together. I had a blue one but they came in loads of colours. Jelly shoes.
Lipcote and impulse and bath pearls from the body shop.
Thinking I was going to marry George Michael how did I not know.
Recording the top 40 on cassette and pressing pause before the DJ spoke too much.
Invicta radio.

humdrum21 · 10/05/2019 20:45

Absolutely love how many people are mentioning the Glasgow Garden Festival. One of my all-time favourite memories is my P7 school trip there. It was just the best, we all thought it was so cool. I wore Flintstone jeans (great big ironed on Flintstone patch😂), a hilarious bomber jacket with the number 54 on the back in red plastic and my tonged hair in a velvet scrunchy.

museumum · 10/05/2019 20:53

I was in primary school and S1/S2 in the 80s in Edinburgh. Shopped at Tammy girl and Chelsea girl. Rimmel heather shimmer lipstick and bodyshop fuzzy peach perfume or dewberry. Impulse body spray.
There was a huge craze for clip on hair bows in about 87/88 and “banana clips” a year or so later.
Step aerobics - or was that very early 90s?

formerbabe · 10/05/2019 20:54

Being incredibly bored on weekends. Only four tv channels...there was always black and white films, horse racing, sport dominating them at weekend's. The Eastenders omnibus was the only good thing. Not so much kids tv, so I remember watching soaps a lot.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 10/05/2019 21:04

Boys with flat top hair styles and black puffa jackets and chinos.

Athena posters, esp man with baby and New York skyline.

MuffingtonClay · 10/05/2019 21:09

museumum banana clips- Yes! I had a Saturday job in a little chemist shop and would spend my day rearranging the rotating banana clip display stand!

MuffingtonClay · 10/05/2019 21:11

All Aboard. So many memories! “My Boomerang won’t come back” is another one that has not aged well though!

Octopus37 · 10/05/2019 21:46

There were some cards (Birthday I suppose) that were really cool. They were black and white and I think one of them had a photo of a womans shoe crushing a cigarette. There were some other similar ones, sold in the card shop in the village where I grew up. They were sort of Athena like. Its going to drive me made now. Yes to Constance Carroll make up, fingerless gloves and tights, satin shirts, Chelsea Girl, Tammy Girl, impulse etc. Off to google those cards now, dont hold out much hope.

Octopus37 · 10/05/2019 21:49

Think there was a card with a cocktail on as well. I thought they were incredibly sophisticated.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/05/2019 01:29

All Aboard. So many memories! “My Boomerang won’t come back” is another one that has not aged well though!

It was already woefully out of date on the day it was released! There are songs that aren't written very sensitively and there are others which appear to have been written with the express purpose of wantonly offending as many people as possible....

TheresWaldo · 11/05/2019 21:51

I'm still sulking that they stopped The Tube the year I went to Newcastle for Uni. The 80s were brilliant.
