Was in the wrong? DH thinks so

My hearing is going and has been slowly getting worse past few years. I just tried to run a bath and something is wrong with the boiler. DH was trying to fix it and then suddenly started shouting. I shouted back to repeat what he’d said as I couldn’t hear him. He shouted again and so I shouted back that I couldn’t hear him. He then shouted “shut up! I’m not talking to you!”

So turns out he was shouting at the dog but I didn’t know that!! Now I’m mad at him for telling me to shut up, he’s mad at me for calling him a bossy purple and he says I was making the dog misbehave by shouting!!! I was in the bathroom, nowhere near the dog.

AIBU to think he didn’t need to get mad over a mishearing?

Does he often not let you sort out household things like a broken boiler? I think there's an issue here that goes deeper than him getting grumpy with you mishearing him.

fecketyfeck21 · 06/05/2019 15:53

can't remember the last time i read a post with so much 'shouting' in it, must be some sort of record.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/05/2019 15:56

Off topic, but for the record I am not a bossy Purple.... 'runs and hides'...

Ellie56 · 06/05/2019 15:59

Sounds like you need to start making some appointments:

  1. Get somebody qualified out to fix the boiler. It is dangerous to try and do it yourself.
  2. Make an appointment for a hearing test. Living with someone whose hearing is going is a PITA.
  3. If you really have got problems as indicated by your user name get yourself off down to the doctors. Hmm
RomanyQueen1 · 06/05/2019 16:03

OP you need to get your ears sorted if you can.
I too have this problem and it's not only my dh that's fed up with it, I hear the most ridiculous things they haven't said. I know it's getting on all their nerves.
I'm making a huge effort to go this week as know I need a hearing aid.
I'd let it go, sounds like everything was loud when he was trying to find the problem.

RhiWrites · 06/05/2019 16:05

It’s all happening over here. My boiler person seems to be working the bank holiday and is already on the way!

fecketyfeck21 · 06/05/2019 16:07

perhaps you could sign up with british gas contract and pay monthly to a boiler service.

DCDA · 06/05/2019 16:15

Yes you need to get your hearing checked, but as a previous poster said hearing aids do not correct your hearing like glasses correct sight.

I have significant hearing loss and wear hearing aids, it doesn’t help much with my hearing at all but helps with the incessant tinnitus.

People on here have said a couple of time how difficult it is to live with someone with hearing loss, yeah how terrible for them. I also find that people seem to find my hearing loss mildly amusing, it certainly doesn’t seem to get the same sympathy or allowance that other problems seem to.

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 16:18

I feel you DCAD, nobody would laugh at a blind person for bumping into things. It’s as frustrating for us as it is for those living with us.

OP posts:
plunkplunkfizz · 06/05/2019 16:29

He didn’t laugh though, did he? He got angry? If I had to live with someone who was going blind but denied it, I’m sure I’d find that frustrating enough to snap or shout from time to time.

Baloonphobia · 06/05/2019 16:34

You should get your hearing sorted. It's incredibly annoying to try to communicate with someone with poor hearing. Fair enough if you can't do anything about it but if you just can't be arsed...

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 16:57

There’s a lot more to it than “can’t be arsed” balloon

I get you OP
I’m early 30s and have hearing aids. It was a big deal getting them, as I knew people would take the piss (they do)
I also have social anxiety because people get frustrated repeating themselves. Must be so hard for them Hmm

DCDA · 06/05/2019 17:12

There it is again, how annoying it must be to try to communicate with someone with poor hearing, not how difficult it must be to communicate with other people when you have poor hearing.

As I’ve said, yes of course she needs to get her hearing checked out but the assumption seems to be that if she just wore hearing aids it would all be fine. Even the best hearing aids will never get you back to normal.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 06/05/2019 17:17

Clearly you don't think you're BU. Your username is grim btw.

Kittykat93 · 06/05/2019 17:19

Seriously op how did you decide that username???

SavingSpaces2019 · 06/05/2019 17:23

I don't buy the excuse that he "won't let you" arrange for the boiler guy to come round and fix the boiler.
He can't stop you.

If you don't have access to money to pay the boiler man - THAT is a bigger problem....

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 17:26

Username - combination of iron tablets and lactolose.

I don’t care if you “don’t buy it” savingspaces, life isn’t as simply as it’s made out to be on mumsnet. We haven’t all seen the ocean

OP posts:
WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 06/05/2019 17:29

So if you're convinced you're right, why did you post?

You sound like you've got problems with your DH that are part of a bigger picture, would it better to start a more useful thread for support with them?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 06/05/2019 17:31

What does "we haven't all seen the ocean" mean please?

fecketyfeck21 · 06/05/2019 17:38

op is using all these obtuse expressions to promote her thread 'all seen the ocean' more nonsense and 'haven't seen the bigger picture'

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 17:39

I’m not convinced I’m right!! I just don’t think it would hurt for people to be more understanding of what it’s like to have hearing problems and then be shouted at!

OP posts:
MashedSpud · 06/05/2019 17:41

My hearing isn’t the best and when the time comes that DH is calling our cat a bossy purple because of it im going to invest in a hearing aid. Grin

Seriously though specsavers do hearing tests these days or get your gp to refer you for a test on the nhs.

slipperywhensparticus · 06/05/2019 17:44

Sorry OP I dont think anyone is hearing what your saying .....

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 17:46

Spec savers so hearing tests?? Not sure if that is sarcasm or true?
