Makes me a bit

she's only been here for 2 days and has posted heaps and I've been here for years and years and only post a bit so no-one knows me

i'm sure she's lovely and it's not like it's her fault, but I'm annoyed

(have asked her politely if she'd like to change her name...now she probably hates me)

AIBU?

i only found out a few days ago there is an ellbell. she was here before me. do you think i should name change?

alicet · 18/07/2007 08:16

Not read whole thread but yes I do think you're unreasonable. Who cares? In real life most people have other people with exactly the same name and its not an issue - what you say and who you are counts for more.

Not exactly welcoming to the poor new girl either

ladylush · 18/07/2007 08:17

well I have changed my name several times, mostly because the names indicated I was pg, then I went on to m/c so I thought they were unlucky. Most recent name was nothing to do with pg, but m/c anyway. So decided that one was also unlucky and changed again. In essence, I change my name every time I m/c.

OggsfrogswartsExpress · 18/07/2007 08:25
Sad
Katy44 · 18/07/2007 08:28

alicet, I agree with you that in general it shouldn't matter, but on here your name is the only thing people can recognise you by (and your typing style, I suppose) whereas in RL you have a face, voice etc.
There was a recent thread where someone called DaisyBo was making some quite controversial statements - I assumed wrongly she was DaisyBoo and was quite surprised at how she was acting, I wasn't the only one. If I hadn't realised that it would have affected how I thought of DaisyBoo in general, which is quite (although I'm sure she doesn't care what I think of her )
As for the Katy44/ivykaty44 thing, I think they're different enough not to get confused, I was just impressed at the coincidence. ivykaty44, if you're around, come and join us!

Katy44 · 18/07/2007 08:29

ladylush

FlameDelacour · 18/07/2007 08:32

MumOfMonsters had the same when MumOf2Monsters was saying very different things to how she felt.

Also when Xenia arrived and everyone thought it was Xena at first glance.

The Flame17 thing bothered me because I had an email asking me if it was me selling pirate costumes

FlameDelacour · 18/07/2007 08:32

Ladylush

ladylush · 18/07/2007 08:34

Oh it's alright guys - don't be sad. Was just explaining the name changes.

Botbot · 18/07/2007 08:37

There's a hotbot, which is quite similar to my name, but then I've only been here for six months or so, so she may well have been here longer than me...

Is there any way of telling?

It doesn't bother me except I sometimes worry that people think it's me with a name change ? would be quite ironic since my 'bot' is very far from 'hot'. 'Enormousbot' would be more fitting in my case.

OggsfrogswartsExpress · 18/07/2007 08:48

ladylush, is it you who was trying to decide between lush and luscious?

If so are you aware of the connotations of 'lush'? If you are then just tell me to bugger off, if not I thought you should know

RudyVonLasagne · 18/07/2007 08:56

no-one has a name like mine...

RudyVonCanneloni · 18/07/2007 09:00

I've been here, like, forever.

ladylush · 18/07/2007 09:05

No, I wasn't debating it. Oh dear has someone got a similar name. Another name change looms. Lush re alcohol? Yep, that's why I chose it. I am having a bender following my 3rd m/c.

Katy44 · 18/07/2007 09:27

alicet, thought I'd talk to you on this less controversial thread
You said "here here fishie", and the NEXT post was by 'pixiefish'
I thought you were psychic! If I'd looked down the thread I'd have realised there was another poster called 'fishie' you were talking to
Sorry, I get confused easily

CatIsSleepy · 18/07/2007 09:30

ladylush- your name makes me think of luscious rather than other connotations.

have been wondering-if you are out there sleepycat-
do you mind my having similar name to you?

emj23 · 18/07/2007 10:12

My old name was too similar to another MNer. She didn't ask me to change it but people did seem to think we were the same person so I changed it anyway, I thought it was only polite to do so.

MamaD · 18/07/2007 10:31

I've not been here long and now I've read this thread I'm worried that I may have upset MamaG.......... If I have I'll happily change [smile}

Oblomov · 18/07/2007 10:33

I don't think it os o.k. to take a name that is anything like anyone elses. I appreciate that you may not know, when you choose it, but as soon as it is pointed out, then you should change.
The Daisybo and Daisyboo thing is ridiculous. And Mumof2monsters, compared to mumofmonsters ?
It not fair. And you should change.

mumofSlytherinsmonsters · 18/07/2007 10:36

i styarted a thread a while ago (in fact more than one) asking mumof2monsters to change. She has different ideas to me - posts a lot on the madeleine threads for eg- and i don't like being mixed up with her!

I think it should come down to who is more prolific. someone might have been here for 6 years but hardly posted.

Oblomov · 18/07/2007 10:40

I agree with katy44 and strongly disagree with alicet. It is not like RL. Having the same name in RL - Debbie or Helen. I recognise expat immediately. Taking a name with one vowel/letter different, being a different person, style and life is not o.k.
It initially goes on name. No face attached. At first glance, it comes name to the name.
That is why it is not fair.

mumofSlytherinsmonsters · 18/07/2007 10:41

i've read thru the thread now.

Whever it was that said its just a name...well actually its not just a name. its who i am on here. i have tried other names especially since mumof2monsters came along and i don't feel like me in them. i have a history on MN with this name and people know who i am and can refer to that history when i post. i post everyday so i count myself as a reg

aDad · 18/07/2007 10:45

I do think tassis and tassi will be v confusing, and i notice that tassi has refused the request to change

It is confusing. I had a previous name which I loved, but after a couple of weeks I found out it was very similar to another person who had had hers for ages. I was absolutely mortified and changed immediately. I think when these things happen a polite note should go to MNtowers and they can then decide whether or not to ask the newbie to change....
