Because they're often wrong. Just saved myself £2.50 on a bogof that hadn't gone through properly.

Also check that the price on the label is the same on the till. I paid for something at £4.75 but the label said £3.50 as it was on offer. Turned out the number on the label didn't match the number on the item but they honoured the lower price anyway as their error.

Always check in Homebase. The last few things we've bought there have gone through at a higher price than the label said. The assistant was most surprised I wanted my over charge back Hmm.

MegaClutterSlut · 04/05/2019 17:27

I always check mine, I find Asda always cock up their pricing

ContinuityError · 04/05/2019 17:29

And watch loose weighed items, such as fruit and veg - I’ve sometimes found that the till operator has inadvertently leant on the scales at the same time.

araiwa · 04/05/2019 17:36

Fuck that

Not worth £2.50 to spend ages checking receipts on the odd occasion it might be wrong

BagofTeeth · 04/05/2019 17:39

The only time I can manage to get to the supermarket they only have the self-scan machines open and this is the one positive thing when them as I can check the price of everything as soon as I scan it.

I'm sure you can appreciate that to some people, it's a lot of money araiwa?

MegaClutterSlut · 04/05/2019 17:46

But it not 'just' £2.50. If I added up all the times shops cocked up their pricing over the year, it would add up over the £100 mark

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 04/05/2019 17:46

Bought 10 bags of scampi in Iceland.
Checked my receipt at home and instead of 10 I'd been charged for 76 bags.

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 17:48

It's a fair amount of money really and it's not the only time in the last couple of months. I'd say there's a mistake a couple of times a month, usually only a quid or two, but in the last few months I've got at least a tenner back in this way. I'm not going to lose a tenner for the sake of a couple of minutes checking what they've given me to check.

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 04/05/2019 17:48

Yes, I thought that Worra. And the 2.50 was on ONE bill, so.... One week, DH and I were overcharged about £30 across a restaurant bill, till receipt in a garden centre, and a supermarket, all rectified by checking the bill before leaving. So much more than £2.50 there.

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 17:50

Exactly, mega. Every little helps, as they say. Supermarket shopping involves doing most of the work yourself anyway. Damned if I'm going to pay even more than I need to, for that.

OP posts:
NannyPear · 04/05/2019 17:50

If you do a big shop though, will you always remember the deals once you get to the till? A huge proportion of what I buy has some sort of offer and I'd never remember! I do use the handheld scanner as I go when I can which I love.

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 17:55

LOL I do. I'm kind of skint which focuses the mind. Plus I always meal plan and shop to a list (see? skint) so I don't just put things in because they're on offer so I remember the offers iyswim.

EngagedAgain · 04/05/2019 17:59

I usually scan as I shop so check as I go, or would be a faff. If I'm not scanning as I go, in any shop I always check amount on card reader, as a few years ago shop assistant punched in too many 0's making £42 £4,200! She noticed before I put card in but been wary since.

£2.50 is a meal for me. You're very fortunate to be able to dismiss it.

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2019 18:01

I know I mention this on every supermarket shopping thread but if Scan and Shop is available then use it. You can keep an eye on everything you pay for and check as you go along.
No cashier mistakes, and no need to check your receipt as you scanned it all yourself.
Also great to keep an eye on total spend too.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/05/2019 18:02

Come on, it takes 2 minutes to check a till receipt. If you are being paid more than £2.50 for 2 minutes, then good luck to you.

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 18:03

Is scan and shop easy to use? I am a luddite really and still get a bit fuddled at self service tills.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2019 18:07

Give it a go Reasons. At first I was a bit clueless but all you have to do is scan the stuff as it goes into your bags and the handsets are dead easy to use.You can take as much time as you need, and you avoid all the conveyor malarkey. Grin
Running total is brilliant.

notacooldad · 04/05/2019 18:08

I was charged £89 for a butternut squash in Morrisons once!!
I didnt need to check the receipt to know some thing was wrong!

Tigger001 · 04/05/2019 18:09

Yes scan and shop is great (when the scanner you are issued and the tills work properly)

Simply scan your club card
Pick up handset that lights up
Scan as you go - pack into bags in trolley as you go )
Scan the barcode on the till from the scanner
Pay
Collect receipt (check 😉)
Leave

Tigger001 · 04/05/2019 18:10

You can also easily remove any scanned items as you go if you change your mind

itbemay1 · 04/05/2019 18:11

I got charged £7.50 for a pint of milk inM&S once, only realised when I got home.. went back next day and got a full refund, I always check!

EngagedAgain · 04/05/2019 18:12

You have to have a clubcard for scan and shop. Then just zap that in shop, stick the zapper on the trolley and scan each item as you go. If you got multiples, say 6 cans of peas, just put 5 in trolley and zap one 6 times, it's easier. Since I've been using it, it's a rarity to use a till. On odd occasion there might be problems, like once I got half way round and mine packed up, but the good outweighs the bad.

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 18:14

Hmmm thanks folks it does sound good but I doubt myself. What if I have a chickpea scanning crisis and there are no staff available? I like that you can take as much time as you want with it.
