Because they're often wrong. Just saved myself £2.50 on a bogof that hadn't gone through properly.

sunshine cake yes, I usually go once a month. Thought it was expensive for the amount that I had but when I got home and put it all away thought I should check receipt.

I rang the shop straight away cos I didn't have time to go back before they shut that day, they were very apologetic and said to pop in next time I was passing.

When I went back for my refund I was called the scampi lady Grin

Onecutefox · 04/05/2019 18:37

At self-checkout the sale assistant checked a few of the products in my trolley. Her handheld scanner showed that I didn't scan one product but mine showed that I did scan it. Otherwise, I would have paid twice for it.

Coulddowithanap · 04/05/2019 18:39

I don't think I would notice if I'm over charged a small amount per item unless I'm doing shop and scan as I wouldn't remember how much they were supposed to be.

Pinkkahori · 04/05/2019 18:40

My DH was doing a big shop in Lidl. He thought it seemed expensive so checked the receipt in the car.
They had charged him for 89 croissants SmileShock when he had bought 2. I think the til code for them is 89.
They refunded him straight away with much amusement.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/05/2019 18:41

I do check, but have virtually never found a mistake, however I was charged £76 for something that should have cost about £2.50 in Ikea once, definitely worth checking. I have to say I see all the benefits of the handheld scanners but I find them a bit of a pain to use and worry about forgetting to scan things. Plus in our local supermarket the wifi is patchy and they sometimes cut out and lose all your data.

Elderflower14 · 04/05/2019 18:42

I was in Morrisons. There were two labels for the 24 x Blue Riband bars. One label said £2 the other said £2.74. I got it scanned at the till and it was £2. Till assistant didn't seem bothered when I told her!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 04/05/2019 18:43

yes, our tesco are very ungracious about overcharge errors, it's the main reason I scrutinise any offers or promtional items I have bought!

and seriously jelly how the hell did you not notice at the till that you had been charged for SEVENTYSIX bags of scampi, even at (for instance) a pound a bag you have a basic discrepancy of £66

Al2O3 · 04/05/2019 18:43

Check the value on the card reader before it goes through folks.

I kid you not, my monthly car park and that morning's breakfast was approved at £11,838.00 a couple of years ago and actually went through. I didn't look initially as I was talking to the owner who runs a cafe from the same site, and for a variety of reasons money was in that particular current account. I spotted it an hour later and the bank sorted it.

A relative did a similar thing in Budgen's once - £600 for a then £6 bottle of whisky, on one of the old card swiping machines, but at least they rang her back and cancelled it.

GabsAlot · 04/05/2019 18:43

yes happened to me a couple of times before i started using scan and shops-deal wasnt honoured had to go over to cs but it all adds up

asda u need to put your details in because they dont have a loyalty card

caughtinanet · 04/05/2019 18:47

I was sure someone would have posted the totally wrong information that a shop has to sell you something at a wrong price if they've made a mistake with the ticket and sure enough mashpotatomashpotato hasn't let me down.

Whatever anyone tells you a shop is under no obligation to sell you anything at any price at all.

EugenesAxe · 04/05/2019 18:49

OMG I saved so much money after realising many half price ticketed items I'd bought in Hobbycraft had gone through full price (I'd had my eye on them a while but not bought as I didn't have a definite project to use them on, but as they are normally really pricey I snapped them up!). The manager said that offers on the shop floor are sometimes updated on the system before they've been properly notified and had time to take the tickets down. They were awesome though and put it all through for me under 'good faith'.

PetrichorRain · 04/05/2019 18:49

I always check amount on card reader, as a few years ago shop assistant punched in too many 0's making £42 £4,200

Once a shop assistant did this the other way around for me! I didn’t notice til I checked my credit card statement the next month either. I got something for £2.00 that should have been £200.

Onecutefox · 04/05/2019 19:13

What annoys me in the supermarkets is when they put the wrong price tag against the product with a similar name. I don't know if that's on purpose or not but on two occasions I had to tell the sales person that you charged me the wrong amount. On those two occasions they also accepted that it was their fault.

littlemeitslyn · 04/05/2019 19:13

Ariwa 😂

Eustasiavye · 04/05/2019 19:19

Toys R us used to be terrible for this.
They added an extra 0 to my mum's bill, then told her she had to go to customer services to fill out a refund form, rather than rectifying their error there and then at the till.
They have done this with me too.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 04/05/2019 19:28

I find Asda always cock up their pricing

I find this too - they mark offers on the shelf but don't update the bar code price, so if you aren't wary you will consistently overpay. I haven't had this problem in any other supermarket, but many many times in ASDA.

And after you query it and someone goes to check, and they finally sell it to you for the correct price, they still don't update the price. If you buy the same item a few days later, the same thing will happen.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/05/2019 20:07

Don't leave your contactless card sitting on the reader either, someone nearly paid for my shopping in Lidl the other day by leaving her card on the machine and walking out, I noticed it just as the cashier was about to press "card" for my shopping, if she had done it would have taken it straight off her card (it was

orangejuiced · 04/05/2019 21:07

Definitely do scan as you shop, it's very easy and you can also make sure you only spend your budget, so no stress at the tils. Occasionally they rescan at the til, I've never had a problem. Prevents shoplifting which is good.

Lidl is worst for overcharging ime, often only by 20p or so for a item but still annoying, as they have no customer services I just suck it up and use a different supermarket next time.

Gingerkittykat · 04/05/2019 22:02

Asda are bad for their offers not coming off at the till, or having out of date offers still marked. They do honour the out of date offers though, example buying several packs of rice on BOGOF scanned full price because they left the offer on a couple of days too long.

McDonalds drive through were good. They charged me for 3 portions of cheese bites, instead of 1 portion with three bits in it. I phoned them when I noticed and they not only refunded the two extra cheese bites but gave me the same order for free which was around £12 next time I went in.

New look were terrible. They had a big sign on their window saying 25% off everything. My dress went through full price, they acted surprised the offer was still on the window and only once they called a manager they honoured the discount with a lot of huffing and puffing.

I love scan as you shop, if you have a problem then put the item aside and sort it at the till. It flagged me up as a shoplifter though since once they did the random check and I had not scanned the carrier bag. They then did a full scan of a full weeks shopping in front of the whole shop which was embarrassing. I got checked every time for a while, and now still get checked every 2 or 3 shops when I rarely got checked before.

Onecutefox · 04/05/2019 22:08

If you scan as you go and remove and add item like a few times then you will be checked at the checkout.

Msfoxy17 · 04/05/2019 22:12

Interesting thread.. I always check receipts and my DP never does.. The number of times I've found we've been overcharged and he hadn't noticed! Small amount but it all adds up. It's usually the offer... I don't shop there anymore but when I did! Waitrose was pretty bad for this...

EngagedAgain · 05/05/2019 07:27

Funnily enough I fail to notice, when it's the other way round! 😚

Sparklingbrook · 05/05/2019 07:39

If you scan as you go and remove and add item like a few times then you will be checked at the checkout.

Not in my experience, and I am always changing my mind.

mondaylisasmile · 05/05/2019 07:58

Pissing myself laughing here that £2.50 for a 30 second, or a two min detailed check isn't worth it.

If someone has that much cash that they can't be arsed to do that quick check... Tesco and Asda shareholders deserve the sly profit bump!

SunsetBunny · 05/05/2019 08:09

Sainsbury’s.... they’ve got rid of their customer service desk. So if you do have an error on your receipt (or want to return something), you have to queue at one of the checkouts to get it rectified - absolutely bloody infuriating!
