Because they're often wrong. Just saved myself £2.50 on a bogof that hadn't gone through properly.

Baloonphobia · 04/05/2019 18:15

I'd pay someone 2.50 just so I didn't have to check all my receipts. I either throw them away immediately or the get balled up and live in the bottom of my bag for years.

Riverviews · 04/05/2019 18:15

I always check the receipts. Rarely find mistakes in the supermarket ones, but restaurants are particularly bad. It is impressive how often the odd starter, drink and even bottle of wine sneaks into your bill.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 04/05/2019 18:15

Waitrose once charged me for a children's dress that I didn't even buy. No idea where that came from, but if I hadn't looked at the receipt I would have overpaid by about £15. It's worth the time it takes to look.

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2019 18:15

IIRC Asda doesn't need anything fror Scan as You Shop, I log in to get a scanner with my mobile phone number.

Waitrose you need a My Waitrose card (free coffee!) and Tesco a Clubcard.

You get a very occasional rescan. Tesco & Asda are a few items of your shop, Waitrose it's the whole lot.

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2019 18:17

I have never had a scanning crisis OP. You will be fine.

Pimmsypimms · 04/05/2019 18:17

Our local coop is the worst for this, literally 8 times out of 10, they would charge me full price for reduced items.

missmouse101 · 04/05/2019 18:18

Yes, I agree. Often get charged incorrectly.

CalamityJune · 04/05/2019 18:18

I always use the scan and go in ASDA now. You only need to type in your phone number and you pack as you go along too. Gives you a running total so you can see if youre spending too much on unnecessary extras as well.

I always buy exactly what i need for the week too. Interesting how, when you shop that way you rarely end up buying things on multi-buy

EngagedAgain · 04/05/2019 18:19

It's probably a good idea to get doing these things, because technology is taking over, and one day you might have to unexpectedly have to do something yourself, even though there is usually someone around to help. For instance last week I was in post office to pay a bill (I am still a bit of a luddite in that respect) and long queues, so I done it on self service.

SunshineCake · 04/05/2019 18:20

@jellyshoeswithdiamonds - were you doing a huge shop as 76 bags of scampi would be a heck of a lot more than 10?

Loubilou09 · 04/05/2019 18:22

If you’re going to do it with supermarket receipts at least do it at home. Saw a woman who I can’t stand (years of my daughter being in her daughters class and watching her helicopter parenting and taking every last bit of energy any teacher had for the class for her and her daughter which was infuriating) beadily scanning the receipt at the end of the checkout and it just made her look like a complete petty, over the top whinger (which she was!)

Baloonphobia · 04/05/2019 18:22

I never count my change either. Although the amount of times I actually pay with cash now are few and far between.

iklboo · 04/05/2019 18:24

If you’re going to do it with supermarket receipts at least do it at home.

No because you can't raise the error with customer services then.

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 18:26

I sit on one of the benches and go through it, like the complete petty over the top whinger that I am. 😂

lalafafa · 04/05/2019 18:26

and in restaurants, we had a bill for 4k once

personalsummer · 04/05/2019 18:26

I now do this especially after a girls night out found when we came to split the bill at the end of the night some CFs had added their drinks to our table! Only on checking that we realised before paying that we hadn't had half the drinks on the receipt and had to ask for them to be removed (fortunately we didn't mix our drinks)!

mummagirl · 04/05/2019 18:27

Happened three times out of my last 6 purchases.
Really do need to keep an eye
I'm not a big shopper.

EngagedAgain · 04/05/2019 18:28

A couple of times I've scanned a particular bread, saying it won't scan and says to the effect of dealing with it at the till. I tried it again and was fine. You get used to minor problems. I presume you're worried about problems at the till? The scan and shop has far less problems than the other self service, which is always saying something about the bags etc.

CallMeRachel · 04/05/2019 18:28

Mistakes are frequent in my experience. In Aldi recently I was charged for 4 x Avocados rather than 4 x potatoes, there was a big difference in price!

Also things being scanned by accident again. My mother was a stickler for checking every single penny and almost daily she'd find an error.

If Tesco overcharged they used to give you Double the difference back in cash, I'm not sure if they still do or whether my mother single handedly managed to drain that pot dry Grin If something went through the til higher than the advertised price on the shelf edge, she'd go and buy more then go to customer services for DTD back!

Not sure whether to be impressed or thoroughly embarrassed tbhBlush

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 18:30

Yy restaurants can be terrible for it. I've been overcharged loads of times especially in groups. And last time we went to McDonald's we didn't get half our stuff ) table service) despite being charged for it so I went back and they were in such a state of chaos we ended up with free fries because they just shoved food at us. Then we won a free pie! Happy days!

Wilko tried to rob me of a small fortune last week. Their sanex zero is £1 a bottle but scanned as £2.50 at the tills. I bought 6 so was glad I'd checked.

MashPotatoMashPotato · 04/05/2019 18:36

My husband laughs at me for this, I always check the offers as they often don’t come off at the till. I often go back for £1 (when we are still in the shop!) he thinks I’m tight, I think he’s a mug for not getting his money back. I nipped in for just loo roll the other day and one of the branded ones had £2 off, only one left so I thought I’ll have that. Got to the till and it was £6. I just said “no it’s not” so off we went back to the shelf and she snatched out the offer label. I just said well you’ve got to sell me it at that, she huffed but did, offer ended the day before. I said to my husband you’d have paid £6 like a mug wouldn’t you? He claimed not if it was just 1 item. A whole till receipt he’d have no idea.

I check as I walk out in the supermarket, I don’t linger. I did a summer working at Tesco’s when I was a student and my biggest annoyance were the ones that stood at the end of the till checking so that the next customer couldn’t pack their stuff. They’d then say “that wasn’t £xxx”... then you tell them 6 times to take it to customer services as there’s nothing a till person can do. Everyday. It was a looong summer!

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 04/05/2019 18:36

Yes I always check, habit passed on to me by my careful parents. And yes quite frequently find an error - often a special offer on the shelf label that doesn't show/get taken off at the till. Our local Co-op are the worst offenders for this but the staff are lovely and always correct the mistake with a cheerful smile, they're obviously used to it!

DH used to gently take the mickey about my tight Scottish ways until one time (pre DC) we had been away for a lovely, wine filled long weekend using room service etc in a nice hotel so the bill was rather large. He was going to just automatically pay it but I wanted to check - discovered a whole extra meal with many drinks from a different table/room had been put on our bill. Saved us over £100. So yes worth checking!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/05/2019 18:36

WHSmith re the worst with 3 for 2 .

I bought some stationary for my DC (checked they were all on the offer) .
Used the self scan , it didn't give me the reduction.
Cancelled and went to the till (and told them why) , the till still didn't register . They got someone to check ,......and finally it worked .
Luckily I was buying those 3 items so I was aware , if I'd bought a load of things I might not .

And the Sales staff are always Hmm when I query , and I know I haven't picked up items which aren't on offer . Even if they said "Oops, flipping tills have a mind of their own" it is better than the heavy sighs when they have to check things properly .

CheshireChat · 04/05/2019 18:36

Asda is pretty bad for it, but at least they sort it out quickly and they're apologetic, Tesco just get annoyed you've mentioned it.

But it is worth having a quick look on the way out.
