Because they're often wrong. Just saved myself £2.50 on a bogof that hadn't gone through properly.

I don't know why shops aren't legally obliged to sell you the goods at the advertised price - they are receiving the customer with false advertising. If they had to honour it, they might be more careful about accurately pricing

I also go and sit on a bench, Reasons to check the receipt. Most of the time there are no errors thankfully. I'm not a fan of 'scan it yourself' - another Luddite here.

When I bought a pair of trousers they accidentally put them through twice. The cashier pointed me to Customer Services. They not only took off the extra, they took did so twice as it was company policy - so I got the item for free. The poor cashier got a telling-off which I was sorry about as we all make mistakes. It's always worth checking the receipt especially if you're on a budget.

This is why I get my shopping delivered as I was shamed in an M and S food shop inside a petrol station as they'd overcharged me £24 on a £50 Shop - so almost double!

When I went in the till assistant got grumpier and grumpier - saying loudly to others waiting that they wouldn't be long as they had to check EVERYTHING for me. I did tell the entire queue at the end they'd overcharged me £24 and to check their receipts but it was so bum clenchingly awful I've not done a shop myself since.

I literally buy everything online now.

MissClareRemembers · 05/05/2019 08:45

I once bought a load of stuff in Superdrug which included lots of BOGOF offers. None of them went through the till correctly. I had to go round with a sales assistant and point out the labels on the shelf.

ContinuityError · 05/05/2019 08:52

Does Asda still do the price check guarantee thing, where you enter your till receipt details online and they give you vouchers if your shop would have been cheaper elsewhere? I nearly always got a few quid back this way.

Punxsutawney · 05/05/2019 09:11

Asda are one of the worst for showing a discounted price on the shelf and then the item goes through the till at full price.

MotherOfMinions · 05/05/2019 10:15

I’ve found Tesco to be one of the worst for till prices being different to shelf prices. If we all challenge them on it then hopefully they’ll stop doing it. And all those overcharges add up to a hell of a lot of extra undeserved profit.

JustTwoMoreSecs · 05/05/2019 10:46

My M&S is awful for this. I often buy meals at 3 for 2 and am super careful to only takes the ones that are part of the offer but very often the 3 for 2 is not applied at checkout.
The cashier is always grumpy when I ask to rectify, makes a big deal of calling someone to go and check the labels, huffs and puffs, never apologises etc. I’m sure she wouldn’t want to overpay her shopping so why would she act like this??

Gingerkittykat · 05/05/2019 11:12

@ContinuityError Asda doesn't do the receipt thing any more. Maybe in part because of the people who would collect the receipts from trollies and the car park and claim back loads.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/05/2019 12:37

@jellyshoeswithdiamonds ScampiLady would be a great username! @Onecutefox. Wrong but similar name thing used to happen quite a lot at one of our supermarkets. Staff said it's often due to non-English speaking staff stacking shelves with what seems to be the correct item. Re the bottles of wine appearing on restaurant bills. My XBIL often found this happening... may or may not be connected to the fact that he arrived at the restaurant in a Porsche but was tight as a budgie's bum :)

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/05/2019 13:30

I just checked one and found something had gone through for £7 when marked £10 on the shelf Grin

Orangecake123 · 05/05/2019 13:51

Yep. I was charged twice for one item at Claries accessories.

I did go back the next day when I realized, I had to ask the manager to check cctv and she said she would when the store was closed. Thankfully I got my money back but that's an extra 4.50 I didn't need to pay.

I had the same thing happen in Waitrose; The cashier scanned all my shopping, and I was just about to tap with my card when I noticed the previous customer's card still in the scanner!

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 06/05/2019 21:07

msmighty I do my food shopping at multiple shops all on one day (aldi, lidl, home bargains, tesco) Iceland is my last one, by then I've usually had enough and just want to get home. I buy in bulk there to last us a month, my bill is usually well over £100. The amount of money didn't strike me as strange it was only when I got home and unpacked that it didn't seem like it was right from the amount of shopping I actually had. Maybe I should have noticed at the till but I'm quite conscious of trying to be quick at loading as the Iceland is a little one and they usually only have one till open I cause a queue with my bulk shop Blush

Spongebob I'm off to claim my ScampiLady username Grin
