Frasier Was Better Than Friends

Niles with baby the bird stuck on his head. Niles setting fire to Frasier's apartment. Niles scoring from the halfway line. Kelsey Grammer's wonderful overacting. The lovely autumnal colours. The clever dialogue. The list goes on

Niles and Daphne were better than Ross and Rachel.

Aibu? No I'm not 😀

This is MN, not Nethuns.

I misread that as Netnuns.

DHP is a Republican. Don’t know his opinion of Trump. John Mahoney, who was born in Manchester, was a Democrat, and an opera buff and used to edit a magazine and was really quite erudite.

God I want a cigarette now.

SrSteveOskowski · 04/05/2019 13:33

The episode where Bebe tries to seduce Frasier in her hotel room.
The choir are singing biblical hymns, steam is billowing from the bathroom and as Frasier runs shrieking from the room he spots the number on the door. 666 Grin

Maybe been mentioned already, but one area where both Frasier and Friends have aged badly is in their fairly prevalent 'gay panic' storylines. I think Frasier is more forgivable in this as it tends to use mistaken identity and intentions for high farce (and the ski lodge and Patrick Stewart episodes are sublime) but Friends seems to view being mistakenly identified as gay to be the worst thing that can befall you.

SrSteveOskowski · 04/05/2019 13:39

@TheValeyard, interestingly David Hyde Pierce (Niles) was gay, Dan Butler (Bulldog) was gay and John Mahoney (Martin) was rumoured to be gay but never confirmed.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/05/2019 13:43

Frasier of course, miles better than Friend.

I was delighted to watch The Silence of the Lambs for the first time in ages, and find out that Dan Butler was in it! Also watched The Prestige last weekend and saw Edward Hibbett (Gil Chesterton) in a small role.

Bluestitch · 04/05/2019 13:59

The writer who wrote the trilogy of Frasier episodes with the 'mistaken for gay' plots is also gay and won a GLAAD award for The Matchmaker (which is my fave episode along with Ham Radio and A Tsar is Born). I think with Frasier the joke was always on the main characters and their ridiculous scrapes rather than the gay characters. The lesbian jokes on Friends were awful looking back.

'mulpupple murberer'

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/05/2019 14:05

Whatever happened to Bulldog? He was such a good character, but he just disappeared one season and no mention made of him again.

SrSteveOskowski · 04/05/2019 14:06

I'd forgotten Gil who they all thought was gay and who once went to great lengths to explain that he was married to a woman called Deb. Lots of vehement explaining before he leaves Frasier's booth, then Frasier turns to Roz and says "Well, that's the first time I've ever seen a man IN himself" Grin

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/05/2019 14:07

'mulpupple murberer'
Grin Dh and I use that line. Along with "PUT YOUR BROTHER ON" to the kids.
We used to refer to ds as Niles if he was beoing precious about something. Now he watches (and appreciates) it himself, he gets why.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/05/2019 14:07

Oh, and "I'm not gay, Guy (ghee)."

Bluestitch · 04/05/2019 14:09

I love it when Gil is dressed as the last Mohican. Martin- 'There's that little mystery solved'.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/05/2019 14:09

You are right.

Bluestitch · 04/05/2019 14:10

Guy's - 'rilly' (really) is one of the best deliveries of a word ever.

“That’s easy for you to say”

flowery · 04/05/2019 14:13

Sorry the murberer' got chopped off!

SrSteveOskowski · 04/05/2019 14:16

The episode where Frasier and Niles decide to boycott Cafe Nervosa because of the singer, then Frasier comes in and catches Niles mid dance Grin

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/05/2019 14:21

Roz: "find any polyps up there?" when Niles & Frasier are schmoozing someone.

Bluestitch · 04/05/2019 14:25

This is Kelsey Grammer's comic acting at its finest. Especially the last line. Love this scene!

Dandeliontea123 · 04/05/2019 14:52

‘I didn’t realise it was too much to ask that there be no GUNPLAY IN MY LIVING ROOM!’

Wish Frasier had been on when I was a teenager. I loved watching it the first time round in my 20’s (and ever since) though. I had liked Frasier in Cheers.

Never liked Friends until Chandler and Monica got together.

I read once that some of the Frasier staff went on to work on the Big Bang Theory. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine dialogue sometimes reminds me of Frasier.
