My DP and I are coming to the end of the road. One of those unfortunate 'we both have a different vision for the future' kind of endings where you're both sad to break up, but you both know it's right (along the lines of one is moving abroad, one definitely is not moving abroad, or one wants kids, one doesn't).
I'm been coming to terms with it for a while now.
I had envisioned marriage and kids with DP so am coming to terms with my life being different to that, and slightly aghast at the idea of having to start again from scratch with someone new (but also excited at the idea of a relationship where there isn't this big 'issue' between us?)

The idea of going on a date or getting a dating app or essentially putting myself out there is terrifying to me- I thought I was done with all that!

So AIBU to ask you to cheer me up by giving me hope with telling me the random place or way you met your DP?

Did you meet at work? At a running club? On a train? In Tesco?

I needed somewhere to live and somebody told me their friend was trying to fill a room in a shared house. Moving into that house was the best thing I ever did

LoulouTheroux · 02/05/2019 19:22

We met in a train! Totally random. 5 years later, 2 children and been married 18 months. After a heartbreak I never thought I’d get over, I spent almost 5 years on my own and building a life I was truly happy with. I never expected to fall in love again and I didn’t think it was possible to love anyone as much as I loved my first husband. I’m so lucky to have been proved wrong!

Parky04 · 02/05/2019 19:23

My best mates sister. He wasn't too happy at the time but after 23 years he has come round!!

AnnabelleLecter · 02/05/2019 19:24

At a mutual friend's party.

Overandoverupanddown · 02/05/2019 19:29

@louloutheroux a train! I guessed one! Now did anyone meet at Tesco?! That sounds so lovely, I'm glad you found happiness again

Through friends. My best friend is engaged to one of his friends.

Husband is a younger relative of a friend I met at uni. There's a photo of the two of us on a beach (as part of a big group of her family) aged 12 and 18 🙈
12 years later, still friends with the uni friend, she says "how about X?" We ended up meeting a few times at social engagements, went out on a date, and now it's 5 years later, and we're married with a toddler!

SynchroSwimmer · 02/05/2019 19:37

First day in a new job I was sent to another building for my lunch. No one told me beforehand that I was the only woman there....among 200 or so chaps.

200 pairs of eyes were all on me, and one chap had the confidence to come and chat to me ( my late husband)

More recently I was on a solo activity holiday, it started off terribly and was all going so badly wrong.
I grabbed a mug of tea and a slice of cake, painted a false smile on my face and turned around (resolving to ask whoever happened to be sitting at the table behind me, if I could join them for tea)

...by luck it happened to be a table of single chaps, and we are now (very) close friends 😉

Online dating...was pretty much ready to give up on it as had met a few frogs.
Then DH came along and we've been together almost 13 years (and married for almost 12)

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 02/05/2019 19:41

He was following me around at a nightclub just a few minutes into New Year's Day when we were both 18.
We got engaged 3 months later and married 2 years after that. Our first child was born on the same date we were engaged 4 years after we met.
Nearly 21 years married now with 5 children and he's still my best friend and the love of my life!
It turns out I had met him briefly when I was about 14 when he had been friends with my boss's son.

OP, I wish you all the best in the future and hope you soon meet the love of your life Smile

Met at work. We both worked at the same company but different areas. So wed been at the same events but never crossed paths. Then met properly at Wales. He was the only staff member from his area to go at the same time as the rest of us so I think it was fate.

Now engaged with a dd.

The only relationship I had from online dating was abusive. I’m with a wonderful guy now - he came to one of the fitness sessions I run - we were friends for a long time and now we’re engaged.

ricepuddingme · 02/05/2019 20:12

We met when he ran a bakery and gave me a free cake and his number on my drinks receipt, I still keep the receipt in my purse today Smile

barberousbarbara · 02/05/2019 20:17

We met through online dating. I wasn't looking for anything serious yet he moved in after 4 months and we're still together 4 years later. I know a number of couples that are happily married that met through online dating

Dogparty · 02/05/2019 20:20

I met my partner on Match ... kissed a few frogs before I met him .. but had a spark immediately and still do three and a half years on ... ( I was 49 and separated) xx

Mordred · 02/05/2019 20:31

Met her at a week-long festival. I had no intention of meeting anyone, just wanted some fun (dancing, boozing) with friends there.

Saw her and got talking to her and fell for her. Reciprocated thankfully. Much tent-based fun ensued.

She was from another country, a thousand miles away, but we wrote (letters!) to each other afterwards and I joked about driving all the way there to bring her back to stay with me in London. She said 'OK'. So that's what happened. We lived together immediately then married 3 months later. It's our Silver wedding anniversary in 2 years time.
