to want to know if there is a broadband company not run by bastards?

We set up our Talktalk account 5 years ago, and now want to close it. I couldn't get into my account to do that as I'd forgotten which email address I used, and the password.
No phone number.
When I found a number, I was kept waiting for 15 minutes, then cut off.
The only way I got to speak to a human was by saying that I wanted to upgrade my package.
We went for the company partly because, at the time, Orange had a really bad name.
Is there any broadband company that lets you talk to humans when you've got a problem and has good customer service?

Yes, try the Phone Coop. Offices in Oxford and Manchester, profits returned to members, and reasonable prices.

TalkTalk are utter shites.

Sky is good, no problems with them, had TV for 25 years and BB for 4 years. Instant solutions to problems, nothing is too much trouble

No, you are searching for a mythical beast

Plusnet I’ve found to be good but I haven’t tried to move house or leave them which is where it’s gone pear-shaped with other providers in the past!

Cistavay · 01/05/2019 19:49

I was with TalkTalk for many years- my experience was while it was working it was fine; as soon as you needed help they became unhelpful & even hostile. BT bought me out of my contract with TT- I know they have their critics too but 8 months in I’m happy with the service and when I’ve had to call they have been efficient & pleasant and haven’t expected me to have a masters in computer science like TT staff seemed to! Broadband always seems to vary by area - worth checking with neighbours who is giving decent speeds etc.

PickAChew · 01/05/2019 19:49

Plusnet have been great for us for the past 15 years. Things did go pearshaped when we moved house but that's because there was no active phoneline to the house and it took 2 weeks for that to be sorted. Not entirely their fault, but DH spent hours on the phone to customer services and no one had a clue what was happening because the communication between them and BT/openreach or whatever was distinctly broken. Then again, we had a line fault, a few years back, and that was tracked down and fixed within days.

Sky! Brilliant at customer service and resolve my tech probs quick and easily. (£18.99 a month for phone and broadband too)

ILoveMaxiBondi · 01/05/2019 19:50

EE for me. I’ve had my mobile with them for years and my broadband with them for about 2 years. Brilliant customer service. Never had any problems. They’ve even given me money off my bill and extra data free due to problems I caused!! I recently moved house and the just transferred my existing contract. None of this starting a new 24 month contract like others do. And because the new line isn’t up and running straight away they gave me 50GB free in my mobile and then when the 50GB didn’t kick in for a day they also gave me another 5GB.

Plusnet are great. Never had to wait more than a few minutes on hold. We had a seamless transition when we moved house and had one issue with internet dropping out which was sorted out over the phone by an engineer. We even asked for a discount when we renewed our contract and got 70% off!

Flustercluck · 01/05/2019 19:55

There should be a special place in hell for those shits who run Talktalk. I hate them with a passion. Shit whilst we were with them and their legacy lives on in our house in the form of regular scam calls since our data was hacked.

I’ve been with Plusnet for several years and they are much better. Not perfect but soooo much better than talktalk. Admittedly the bar was set pretty low though.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/05/2019 19:57

Plusnet ! Really never had an issue with them . And always recommended on local

Another vote for Plusnet here. Been with them since I moved home last year.

I called a few suppliers before making a decision - they replied promptly and gave me lots of useful info (moving into ex rental property with various half arsed lines in from previous tenants) without any hard sell.

We use wifi a lot as have a Smart TV rather than Virgin/Sky, and other smart devices. Rarely have any issues with speed or connection and have just been offered a really good upgrade.

rideawhiteswan · 01/05/2019 19:59

I'm with John Lewis broadband, no problems.
I've also had bt and sky. I tend to switch between them to get the best prices.

endofthelinefinally · 01/05/2019 20:01

Plusnet. Really good.

PettyContractor · 01/05/2019 20:02

I've found Plusnet, BT and Sky to be OK, only changed between them due to price/deals. Currently with Plusnet. TalkTalk are famous for being terrible, I think.

Motoko · 01/05/2019 20:22

Aquiss. Excellent customer service. We've been with them for over 10 years and never had a problem that wasn't sorted quickly.

ControversialFerret · 01/05/2019 20:22

I'm on cable with Virgin Media now but we were with TalkTalk at our old address. They were completely and utterly useless. We switched to Sky and they were pretty good.

FloofyDoof · 01/05/2019 20:22

We've recently switched to Hyperoptic from BT. They are very helpful, kept in contact regarding installation times and dates etc, and we have had a consistently perfect, fast connection since the day it was installed. Not something that ever happened with overpriced and frankly useless BT, who also massively overcharged on our last bill, and refused to adjust the bill, preferring to threaten to cut off DD's mobile (which still has a couple of months to run on the contract) unless the full overcharge was paid, so that they could apply the credit to the next month's bill. We had talk talk before BT and they were crap too.

Plus Hyperoptic are significantly cheaper, and no need to have the land line phone that none of us ever used either, so no line rental.

Reiti · 01/05/2019 20:24

Zen, expensive but lovely.

TheSpottedZebra · 01/05/2019 20:25

I'm with John lewis too. And it'sdelivered by... Plusnet.
Good so far.

Aimily · 01/05/2019 20:29

We use EE for a fantastic deal with phone contacts about 4 years ago and they have been fantastic. Any issues I always get to speak to a real person, I always get the friendly ones too which makes the experience better.
Especially as I have had to have the router replaced 4 times. Kept in a stupid place due to poor planning by the builders, (hallway floor) so would regularly got kicked halfway across the house.

Gone2far · 01/05/2019 21:25

thanks all. I've calmed down a bit now.

Yes.
pc-q.co.uk/

They are brilliant - have looked after me for 12 years, always under-promise & over-deliver, & you can always talk to a real person.
And they do that 'drive my computer for me' remote assistance thingy.

Chouetted · 01/05/2019 22:10

AAISP are the ones usually quoted as being the absolute best, but you will have to pay for it.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 02/05/2019 13:36

Another here for Plusnet.

I've been with them for 15 years, the broadband had only gone down twice, their call centres are UK,-based and they answer their phones fairly quickly.

Also, when my line rental and broadband go up in price, I call up saying I'm looking to leave to get a better deal and they slash the price back down again. Wink
