To ask how many clothes you buy?

How often do you buy clothes? And how much do you buy per ‘season’? Do you follow fashion?

I feel like I buy a lot of clothes- I am particularly addicted to buying dresses - but trying to cut down dramatically both for financial and environmental reasons! I can’t wear half of what I own and want to be a bit more minimalist in my approach to life.

Aibu to ask about your clothes habits

Hardly ever.’maybe once or twice a year. I hate shopping and get no joy from it.

My wardrobe is literally black jeans, jumpers and t shirts.

ValiaH · 30/04/2019 22:11

When I need something. So I bought flat knee high dr martens in the winter as my timberland knee high boots died after 3 winters. I have tops that have lasted years, jeans that are a decade old, etc. I rarely buy new clothes for 'fun', I will maybe buy an outfit for Christmas or Easter and replace t shirts as they wear out.

londonrach · 30/04/2019 22:11

Im for ed the buy clothes when they fall apart around every 2-3 years. Due to lack of money mainly. Charity shop really wouldnt want my clothes but i honestly get value for money re wear!

Inapickle230 · 30/04/2019 22:12

Hardly ever, I also hate shopping. I have a few staples - jeans, summer dresses, a couple of jumpers and work outfits. I love buying DD clothes though, when they are for me I just feel it’s a waste of money.

Redorangeyellowgreen · 30/04/2019 22:12

I'm like you, I buy a lot of clothes and I'm going to try and cut back. When we budget each month, my husband and I each give ourselves an "allowance" which is frivolous money to spend on whatever we want. Invariably I spend mine on clothes or shoes.

I could probably go two years without actually needing anything new though, I have so much already.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 30/04/2019 22:14

About 4 x yearly. Clothes shopping is boring.
I'm more enthusiastic about sandals and boots though.

Happyspud · 30/04/2019 22:15

Pretty rare

Stripyseagulls · 30/04/2019 22:15

@redorange yes, I could go a couple of years too. I’m really trying to examine why I buy so much and considering having a year long shopping ban too as feel embarrassed of what I have

happyhillock · 30/04/2019 22:15

Haven't bought any this year yet, i have a lot of clothes don't buy them just for the sake of it, don't particularly like clothes shopping, especially shoe's

Sustainability · 30/04/2019 22:16

When I need something i.e. when something else has worn out. I hate shopping and don't have much money.

cherryblossomgin · 30/04/2019 22:16

I buy some 'key pieces' when I need them. Maybe every few months. I don't spend a lot on clothes and sometimes go to charity shops for work clothes. I buy a lot of PJs and that is something I buy far to many of.

tanpestryfirescreen · 30/04/2019 22:19

100 hangers- everything except pjs and gym kit hang. 1 in and 1 out. Buy good quality clothes that have a long life span. Never buy disposable clothing- so that is my environmental bit I suppose. All old clothing is sold on eBay or donated to the charity shop.

Still18atheart · 30/04/2019 22:21

Hard to say specifically go to a large uk city for a shopping spree didn’t buy a thing. Went to local town the other day and had time to kill brought loads of stuff.
It depends if there’s a special occasion coming up or if I need clothes as my weight fluctuates a lot.

Moominfan · 30/04/2019 22:22

I love shopping. I've recently channeled my energy into selling. I use depop and vintin to sell clothes. Gives me a similar buzz. The cash I make I use to buy myself new clothes, rather than going into my budget. Feels guilt free.

BlackPrism · 30/04/2019 22:22

Some

BlackPrism · 30/04/2019 22:23

Sometimes £30 a month sometimes £150 (new boots or something)

JaceLancs · 30/04/2019 22:27

All the time!
I buy something new most weeks
I also sell what I’m bored of
Due to dieting stuff no longer fits so need to replace
Truth is I love shopping - it’s not causing me financial problems - so I carry on
Today I bought a dress in tkmaxx and a cardigan from uniqlo
Over the weekend I sold 12 things on eBay which will allow me to shop for the next month or so

RoseMartha · 30/04/2019 22:31

When necessary money has always been a bit tight but about to get very tight. So far this year bought essentials like underwear, plimsoles as old ones the canvass was rotten but they had lasted ten years.
I often buy second hand on ebay eg got one of the kids hoody (fat face) like new for about £5

ragged · 30/04/2019 22:41

Sorry OP, not much support here. I try to only have clothes I wear regularly. I wear stuff until it's almost truly rags before replacement.

FraggleRocking · 30/04/2019 22:44

@tanpestryfirescreen I like your method. I might have to adopt it.

donajimena · 30/04/2019 22:49

Rarely. I did buy a load of t shirts recently because mine started to smell under the pits Blush I don't think I'm unfashionable but I don't buy fast fashion for environmental reasons and a hatred of polyester.

DonkeyHohtay · 30/04/2019 22:50

I'm not a shopping fan. I am also one of those middle-aged killjoys who loathes the whole fast fashion thing and having to buy new clothes each "season". I wear things until they fall apart.

This new year, I have bought one new new thing, a Seasalt dress. I have also bought a top, jersey dress and a North Face jacket in a charity shop, so new to me, but not "new new". Oh, and I got a new bag for mother's day.

MrsCollinssettled · 30/04/2019 22:50

I probably buy about 5 items per year (Not including underwear or shoes). Still have quite a few of last century purchases that are still in use. I get very little time for shopping and have been disappointed by online purchases. It's too much faff to order stuff, and then have to trail back to the post office to return things.

Lemond1fficult · 30/04/2019 22:50

Quite a lot - usually 2-4 items a month. Mostly vintage finds on ebay or from a charity shop, though i can splurge that in one day if have a particularly good haul.

It's linked to stress for me - if I'm working really hard, I find it relaxing to scroll though ebay looking for the ideal 'something', or have a furtle round a charity shop for half an hour.

The only way to keep on top of it is to have regular edits of my wardrobe, according to season or how I'm feeling. But then I also find that relaxing too. If I ever found the elusive capsule wardrobe I'd be at a loss.

MrsCollinssettled · 30/04/2019 23:03

I think it's easier to buy less now. Back in the day it was much more clear cut what items were trendy and they stayed in fashion for longer. The benefit of fast fashion seems to be that unless you are obsessed with fashion trends, you can wear things from a few years ago without really sticking out.
