To ask how many clothes you buy?

How often do you buy clothes? And how much do you buy per ‘season’? Do you follow fashion?

I feel like I buy a lot of clothes- I am particularly addicted to buying dresses - but trying to cut down dramatically both for financial and environmental reasons! I can’t wear half of what I own and want to be a bit more minimalist in my approach to life.

Aibu to ask about your clothes habits

Probably too many but I also have clothes 10 plus years old ( although have had to donate some as weight gain ☹️)
I buy natural fibres and do buy to last.
I probably have enough to last 5 plus years for summer ( also have a dress “thing”). My winter wardrobe isn’t so extensive.
My one pair jeans doesn’t fit now😢

Eustasiavye · 02/05/2019 07:18

I've also had to buy new due to weight gain 😢 trying to slim down again.

There is a journalist in the Daily Mail online who has decided not to buy any clothes underwear etc (aside from running shoes as she is a runner) for a year. I quite fancy doing that.

freetone · 02/05/2019 07:31

Once or twice a year since having children! Was a lot more frequent in my younger days

Drogosnextwife · 02/05/2019 07:35

I would say I probably buy one item maybe every month or 2.

WishIwas19again · 02/05/2019 07:36

I buy about 4 times a year. In a year I'll probably buy 1 or 2 pairs of shoes, two pairs of trousers, one pair of shorts, about 8 tops, one dress, two jumpers, one bra, socks. Spend £300-400 roughly across the year.

But mainly because I keep getting fatter so need to buy the next size up, some years I don't buy half that.

I own about 12 pairs of shoes, 8 pairs of PJ (some which I've had over 10 years), and about 8 bags.

rainbowbash · 02/05/2019 07:47

I buy when I need only, not because I want. I spend about £100 a year on clothes. and.get every 2-3 years a new pair of shoes.

one reason is money (or rather lack of) but mainly because I try to live as sustainably as possible. I use things I have rather than adding to the pile, reuse, recycle, freecycle things I don't need etc. Also applies to my wardrobe.

But I look stylish (not nessearily fashionable). I by mainly minimalist black/monochrome clothes, rather timeless stuff so I always look pretty well put together and it doesn't matter that most of my cloths are between 5-10 years old. The only thing I do is re-dying my fav pieces once a year to freshen up the black. costs me a tenner!

fatpatsthong · 02/05/2019 08:04

Too much. I have a limited budget so buy cheap then it's poor quality and shrinks/goes bobbly etc. I swear I'm going to buy better quality but my size has gone up and down a lot over the past couple of years so I am loathe to do this. I do like shopping too.

Twillow · 02/05/2019 08:04

I wear a uniform to work which I love - saves me a fortune! I rarely shop for pleasure, really only when there is a gap in the wardrobe because something is worn out and needs replacing - i.e. a jumper gone too bobbly to wear out, jeans gone thin and holed! When I do shop, I can then afford to buy better quality brands that last - I hate disposable fashion/primark culture, it is terrible for the environment.

ethelfleda · 02/05/2019 08:10

I used to shop before every season. I don’t follow fashion as it doesn’t suit me - I tend to go for very plain but good quality and well fitted stuff.

Best thing I did was put my summer clothes in the loft and then swap them with my winter clothes at the start of the season - I feel like I have a new wardrobe as I forget all the things I had before I rediscover them again!

thebear1 · 02/05/2019 08:13

I tend to buy off eBay, mostly tops. Less than once a month. Some stuff does come and go straight to charity but even so I spend less overall than using the high street shops.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 02/05/2019 08:15

I don’t buy much fast fashion or cheap clothes. I carefully consider most of my purchases so I can wear them with other items in my wardrobe. I do an appointment with a great personal shopper maybe once a year. She sends me a questionnaire and I take photos of what I already have, we shop for key pieces Based on that. I don’t shop expensive designer but more high end high street because it lasts better.

Adversecamber22 · 02/05/2019 09:22

I am not keen on shopping last year I bought

A dress for a funeral, I do have a few black frocks but wanted a new one. It was my Mothers and emotionally very complicated as opposed to sad.
For a Cruise, a full length evening gown, 2 pairs cropped trousers, jumper, two blouses, bikini.
Some new underwear couple times over the year

I buy classic decent quality items that last and there needs to be a reason. I’m going to a wedding in September in America My friend who loves shopping is excited because it’s the only time I will shop with her. When I used to need a lot of frocks for black tie events because of work I used to buy and wear once and then sell to a dress agency.

My best compliment was someone said I was like Jackie Onassis at work once. Out of work I was and am very much jeans and old gaming t.shirts . My favourite jeans are almost as old as DS who is 18.

wichitalinemanswoman · 02/05/2019 10:04

Every month from eBay and charity shops. I love Oasis stuff and love Matalan basic t shirts but buy those new.

thecatsthecats · 02/05/2019 10:25

Quite a lot of clothes, but on everyday items, I replace rather than add to (or try to).

My evening clothes collection has slowly grown for years. I happily wear things over and over, and bring things out years later as if 'new'.

Ronsters · 02/05/2019 11:15

On average I buy about 2 to 3 items a month, I love clothes and there's always something I like. I don't necessarily spend a lot, it may be just t shirts/simple tops.

I have a periodic sort out of stuff I no longer wear and give it to the charity shop, or sell it on EBay.
