To ask how many clothes you buy?

How often do you buy clothes? And how much do you buy per ‘season’? Do you follow fashion?

I feel like I buy a lot of clothes- I am particularly addicted to buying dresses - but trying to cut down dramatically both for financial and environmental reasons! I can’t wear half of what I own and want to be a bit more minimalist in my approach to life.

Aibu to ask about your clothes habits

I buy new clothes very often. Having said that, aside from an abundance of black dresses, I feel like I have a varied and decent wardrobe.

I’m loving blazers right now, just bought an oversized checked one from Zara and a cream/nude one from Topshop. Versatile enough for work and casual outings. I used to work at topshop when I was younger/at uni so I’ll always be interested in the latest trends.

If it makes a difference, I’m short so find it hard to find flattering clothes without needing a tailor, so some items I just don’t wear anymore. In the past I definitely went for quantity over quality.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/05/2019 01:50

I just see them them and think ‘ooo I could do with another pair’ especially when some of them go a bit stretchy, which I hate, and then when I buy jeans think I might as well by a top and t-shirt and before I know it, my previous clearout is back to how it was🤦‍♀️ I have issues, everyone who knows me says that! But surprisingly I don’t go for ‘what’s in fashion’ I buy what I like, for example I don’t own a single cold shoulder top, or any higher neck top as I’m a H cup so they make them look even bigger.

Stripyseagulls · 01/05/2019 06:47

Bloody hell- 87 pairs of jeans Shock I have 4 pairs!!

However, I do have about 80 dresses which is where my addiction seems to manifest! Trying to sort it out though- get a more balanced wardrobe and be more minimalist.

Very interested by all the answers here!

87 pairs of jeans, so I cut down to 28. I checked last week and I’m back up to 41

87 pairs of jeans is too many.
41 pairs of jeans is too many.
28 pairs of jeans is TOO FUCKING MANY.

Denim jeans are about the worst product you can buy in terms of environmental impact. Huge amounts of water to grow the cotton, then process it, dye it blue, treat it with chemicals.... Just awful.

That's not to say you shouldn't buy jeans. They're a definite wardrobe staple. But a responsible consumer would buy a couple of pairs, and wear them until they are falling to bits. Not treat them as a disposable fashion item which gets replaced each "season". Also, know from experience from volunteering in a charity shop that second hand jeans really don't sell. People who are very relaxed about second hand tops, jackets of jeans avoid buying trousers and jeans.

This is not a money issue. Lots of us could choose to go out and buy 28 pairs of jeans. But we choose not to because it's so wasteful, so consumerist and wrecking the planet.

Mother of God! 87 pairs of jeansShock I thought I had a lot of clothes. 8 pairs here. I live in jeans. How can you end up with that many?

thebabessavedme · 01/05/2019 11:48

I love clothes and used to love shopping but now I find the older I get and the more money I have to spend the more frustrated I am becoming with the cheap throwaway tat that I find in the shops, trying to dress for my age is a complete nightmare, I am not and never have been a frump, I know my style, I hate hate hate 'ditzy prints' and dresses with the seam around my middle, I like decent white shirts which now cost a bloody fortune (im talking £200 for one that will last and not lose substance) buying jeans makes me want to cry and I dont want to dress like my mother on formal occasions and quite frankly I can see why the high street is dying

end of rant, I'm off for a nice lay down Grin

thebabessavedme · 01/05/2019 11:53

and fucking hell! storing 87 pairs of jeans! where do live? Chatsworth?

Krouse64 · 01/05/2019 11:53

Like a poster above I work in fashion, so get sent lots of clothes so don’t have to buy any.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/05/2019 11:59

How in the name of chuff does anyone find 87 jeans?? I can barely find one lot to fit well.

Am glad to find that this thread hasn’t descended into a sanctimonious environmental lecture theatre BUT since endeavouring yo understand more about the environmental impact of fast fashion I’ve self banned from Primark; I’d buy something every time I went in each week.

Now I think I buy clothes twice a week, just a vest to replace one outgoing, a T-shirt that fits my expanding frame (am pregnant) and mostly M&S.

But I would still say I have the shopping habits of a 17 year old and will regularly pick up make up, hair bobbles etc when there is just no need.

ReallyUselessEngines · 01/05/2019 12:02

I pop into charity shops when passing them and probably buy an item or two a month on average.

Essentials (e.g. tights, knickers) I replace when needed, usually from supermarkets, probably buy something 2 or 3 times a year.

thebabessavedme · 01/05/2019 12:04

paulhollywood, I was just thinking about how I would go about owning so many pairs of jeans, I think I must have about 8 pairs right now and I would reckon I buy about 4 pairs a year, considering the angst this causes me I think I would be placed in a home for the beweilederd if i tried to buy more Grin

whippetwoman · 01/05/2019 12:12

I'm on a year long clothes buying ban. I've made it to May with no clothes purchases for myself at all. I'm not finding it too difficult. I did it a few years back for the whole year and that was fine too. You get used to not buying clothes after a while.
Now if only I could stop buying books...

MardAsSnails · 01/05/2019 12:14

At the moment 4-5 things a month. This is extremely rare though. But I’ve lost shitloads of weight (4 sizes) in the last year so have been having to buy smaller stuff.

outvoid · 01/05/2019 12:15

Never really followed fashion, just do my own thing. Tend to buy as and when I need things. I wear black skinny jeans a lot with blouses or T-shirt’s (mostly striped).

Shopperami · 01/05/2019 12:18

I thought I was the opposite to every other woman out there, as I hate shopping!

midgwit · 01/05/2019 12:29

I used to buy way too many clothes. I have two wardrobes (with double rails), a linen closet and a huge chest of drawers full, plus another double wardrobe for shoes and bags (and various things in boxes under the bed), all full to bursting. I'm also pregnant so have a clothes rail with my maternity wear on it.
Since having my first child I've not bought anywhere near as many clothes though as

  1. I'm too fat to wear what I have and don't like how I look in most things, and
  2. I just buy my kid loads of clothes instead Blush If I lost weight it would be like going shopping again as I have lots of things I've never worn.
caperplips · 01/05/2019 12:29

Less now than I would like but there has been a financial reason for that. Soon it will change and then I will update my wardrobe.

I have always preferred 1 good quality thing than several cheaper things. Since the New Year I have bought 1 pair of ankle boots £500, 1 pair of black slim legged trousers for work £80, 3 tops which were £85, £50 and £50.

I would like a new jacket and perhaps a dress

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 01/05/2019 12:31

I don’t buy a lot as I don’t need a lot.
I needed so bought new boots last November. They are rocketdog so they will last a few years. My old boots have been consigned to gardening wear.
I have about six pairs of jeans so won’t need anymore until they begin to fall apart and during the summer I live in shorts of which I have about 10 pairs.
I will replace a few t shirts as the weather warms up as I tend to use last years summer T-shirt’s as an extra layer under a jumper in winter so they now are too tatty to wear as a top.
It has been years since I last wore a dress or skirt so I don’t own any.
I have a couple of pairs of black dress trousers and a couple of blouse type tops to wear with them if I am going anywhere jeans or shorts are not appropriate but I rarely do.
I have 3 pairs of decent sandals which are a few years old but still in good condition so I won’t be buying any more foot wear for a while.
One pair of trainers I wear for work along with my uniform. The trainers a sketchers and are a few years old and still going strong so no need to replace.
I will have a cull of my jumpers soon and any that are getting tatty will so in the gardening wear pile or recycling bin and I will replace with new.
Under wear I buy as and when needed but tend to stick to supermarket multi packs.
I have one good jacket that is less than 2 years old and I hardly wear it so it will be years before I need another and I winter coat that should be good for another year(inexpensive parker type)

janeybumtum · 01/05/2019 12:42

I used to buy a ridiculous amount in my early 20s. In my 30s now, I feel as though I've completely lost interest. I am purging far more than buying nowadays. I tend to only buy basics I'm short of. Last month I bought trousers and a plain jumper and a plain shirt from uniqlo. I've realised that if I buy plainer clothes I can make far more use of the good collection of accessories I've built up over the last 15 years!

BuggyWanker · 01/05/2019 13:18

I buy a lot of clothes - probably 10+ items a month. However I go through them a lot and what I don’t wear will either be E-Bayed, made into something for my kids or given to a charity shop.

DH requested a one in, two out policy when cupboards started overflowing which has helped!

eBay is my go to for buying - second hand eases my environmental conscience.

I’ve had two babies and gone from working to being a SAHP in the last 5 years though - I’ve struggled to adjust to a casual wardrobe (I’ve made a lot of mistakes with fit/size/style!) Now my body’s settled I’m definitely slowing and aim to only buy when something falls apart in the near future.

CitadelsofScience · 01/05/2019 13:24

I only buy new when it's replacing something that is falling apart or unrepairable. And even then it's new to me most times but from a charity shop. I'm a middle aged grump though that can't stand the throw away fashion trend that's very environmentally unfriendly.

BackforGood · 01/05/2019 20:11

Wow.
This thread is eye opening.

Even if we take out '87 pairs of jeans' poster as likely to be winding us up.

TippingHenry · 01/05/2019 20:35

I've never had clothes much since my 20s, 30s or even early 40s. Never had the money.

But the last 10 years have built up a reasonable amount. And now I feel I have enough, maybe too many. I have decided next year to do a purge - to decide what still suits me and fits me - and get rid of the rest.

Also, alot of the clothes are a size 14 and I'm a 16 now - so like midgwit I would get a whole new wardrobe if I lost a stone or two!

lifetothefull · 01/05/2019 21:00

I'm also trying to be more minimalist. I've never bought loads, just more than necessary. I'm aiming for max 6 items this year. If I want more it will have to be charity shop. So far bought swimsuit and pair of shorts.

OhTheRoses · 01/05/2019 21:17

I buy as I need things and when I see something I really like.

For work I tend to wear black dresses or black trpusers in the winter. Team them with scarves, jewel coloured jackets or smart fitted cardigans. In summer it switches to navy.

On balance pair of trousers autumn/spring, dress autumn/spring, jacket or cardi autumn/spring. Usually shoes autumn/spring (but one season will be boots, the next loafers, the next courts). I try to get two or three winters/summers out of shoes and bags. Probably 3/4 tops a year.

Buy casual stuff in smaller quantities. A coat/jacket every year but like to get 7-8 years out of my "good" coat.

Underwear and nighties are replaced when needed. Not often.

I reckon I spend about £1500 pa on clothes, possibly a shade more. But I tend to wear everything out and have dresses (esp casual summery holiday ones) that are 7-8 years old.

I will go through the winter wardrobe this weekend. Anything shabby or that hasn't been worn since September goes.
