To ask how many clothes you buy?

How often do you buy clothes? And how much do you buy per ‘season’? Do you follow fashion?

I feel like I buy a lot of clothes- I am particularly addicted to buying dresses - but trying to cut down dramatically both for financial and environmental reasons! I can’t wear half of what I own and want to be a bit more minimalist in my approach to life.

Aibu to ask about your clothes habits

I have quite a lot of clothes. But some of them are decades old. Many of them are years and years old. A very high % of them have come from charity shops.
So I don't buy 'per season' and I don't 'follow fashion'. I buy what suits me and what I like. By buying in charity shops I tend to get the opportunity to buy things that no "fashion expert" has declared we will all wear this year. I have clothes for all sorts of different occasions without spending very much at all.

gluteustothemaximus · 30/04/2019 23:05

Never, none, and no.

Only the kids get clothes, as they keep growing Grin

Londonmummy66 · 30/04/2019 23:11

I have a "uniform" - stretchy knee length skirt or jeans and v neck jumper in winter and long top and crops in the summer. Unless something needs replacing - usually jeans - I only buy underwear tights and t shirts (and just replace like for like at John Lewis and Uniclo respectively)

OwlinaTree · 30/04/2019 23:12

I love shopping. Don't get to go very often at the moment as not much time to myself, but I do enjoy an hour in h & m.

Bw3344 · 30/04/2019 23:14

I buy new clothes all the time! But that's because I work in fashion and get an allowance for uniform so I'm constantly buying with the clothes changing all the time. Which is no problem for me as I love it and I get 50% off. Lol xx

NCforthis2019 · 30/04/2019 23:15

A few pieces every season. I spend far too much money on clothes.

Eustasiavye · 30/04/2019 23:23

I buy lots of clothes.
I always give my old clothes to charity.

Imnotweirdimlimitededition1 · 30/04/2019 23:30

@donajimena try halo sports wash from Sainsbury's for the sweaty underarm on tops it's great

lilabet2 · 30/04/2019 23:30

Very infrequently. I live in jeans, functional skirts and cotton t-shirts most of the time and I feel bad if I spend too much on clothes.

I am youngish but overweight at the moment and was more keen on clothes in the past when I was a size 10/12.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 30/04/2019 23:37

I went through my wardrobe months ago, and as an example I had 87 pairs of jeans, so I cut down to 28. I checked last week and I’m back up to 41. But I go through stuff and say these jeans go with this top, and these jeans with these heels, these jeans with this vest top, these jeans with these boots and so on. I really need a walk in wardrobe 🤣🤣

ShabbyAbby · 30/04/2019 23:37

2 or 3 times a year
Usually when I've gained or lost weight had a baby more like and on the rare occasion I have a party of some kind to go to yet another bloody wedding

I do a lot of shopping but don't buy a lot of clothes. I reckon I buy more footwear and accessories than actual clothes. Most of my money goes on the house or the DCs

TheBlackDogFollowsHim · 30/04/2019 23:40

I’m a bit ridiculous tbh, I spend far too much money on clothes and have too many to even wear. It’s an addiction I fear.

SlimGin · 30/04/2019 23:42

I used to love a shopping spree but now I'm making an effort to buy less unnecessary clothes due to the impact on the environment. I look at the clothes I've worn once or never worn and feel awful about it. So now I only buy if necessary and try to repair what I have. DP always rips the crotch in his work trousers so a have a pile of those on my to-sew list.

When I go back to work (on Mat leave) I'll need to buy new work clothes as have lost some weight, but will buy good quality durable items that last. Most of my friends are a similar size to me so can always borrow a dress if I need it for a wedding/event.

flyingspaghettimonster · 30/04/2019 23:50

Maybe 5 dresses, 5 leggings, a couple of trousers and a few tops a year. Usually no coat Since I can't really go out much in cold weather anyhow. A pair of shoes every 6 months or so when the last pair are worn out. Socks, maybe 20 pairs a year. Pjs or a nightdress if we are going somewhere we need to be seen at night. Thats pretty much it. Anything more would jist be a whim from a second hand shop.

BackforGood · 30/04/2019 23:51

Okay. Clearly I'm either using a very different measure, or I can no longer say I have lots of clothes Grin
I have about 4 pairs of jeans Shock

Popc0rn · 30/04/2019 23:57

How often do you buy clothes?
I cut back a couple of years ago to save for a house deposit. At first it was hard, but I don't miss aimless shopping at all now! It helps that I had masses of clothes to start with, and I wear a uniform for work. I think it's also made me appreciate what I've got.

And how much do you buy per ‘season’?
3 items or less per season.

Do you follow fashion?
No, but I think I look okay Grin

Popc0rn · 30/04/2019 23:59

Marie Kondo your wardrobe OP!

Fuck a duck. Grin Shock

I limit myself to two items a month. I try to buy second hand or from eco friendly brands or ranges but occasionally slip up.

Junkmail · 01/05/2019 00:16

Usually hardly ever. But since June last year I lost four and a half stone and had to replace my ENTIRE wardrobe. I literally had nothing that fitted. I went from a size 16-18 to a size 6-8 so replaced the whole lot gradually over the last couple of months.

Unburnished · 01/05/2019 00:17

I loath shopping, everything is brown, mustard or khaki at the moment which look horrible on me (blonde/blue/pale).

I buy far less than I’d like to (about £500 each season give or take) but it varies hugely, so more in winter due to boots/coats etc.. and less in summer because dress & sandals combo does for most days.

It seems that the mid-range has gone so you either have high street shit or high end break the bank stuff.

I’d love to find a shop that does quality clothes in natural fibres, which are cut well (no box shapes), finished well and in neutral colours, all under £200. With no sodding frills. Every dress I looked at last weekend had frills sewn on the hem, the sleeves, the collar, the belt or the straps. I look like an overgrown child in them. Cant wait for this trend to end.

Unburnished · 01/05/2019 00:19

87 pairs of jeans! Shock

I have twelve.

Zduse · 01/05/2019 01:00

Very rarely, I hate shopping! I pick up the odd bit each year but most of my clothes are years old. I live in jeans or tracksuits or shorts and hoodies and tshirts and most of the tshirts are over 5 years old.

Bellasorellaa · 01/05/2019 01:27

Every year

Bellasorellaa · 01/05/2019 01:27

Sorry every season I buy something new

BadLad · 01/05/2019 01:37

As and when I need them, except in the summer, when I buy a load of new T-shirts.

I usually need a few work shirts, a few pairs of work trousers, a couple of pairs of jeans and some sweaters each year.

I also buy at least one coat in autumn.
