I am not reliant on it . I just enjoy it every night though ...

Take no notice OP - I've drunk drunk loads and I'm in mid fifties and am the most healthy person I know - literally have no health issues at all compared to my non drinking peers - who seem to be plagued.
Mumsnet is not the place to discuss this and get sensible answers.

agnurse · 30/04/2019 22:41

One way to determine if one has a problem with alcohol is to ask the CAGE questionnaire:

Have you ever felt the need to Cut down on your drinking?
Have you ever felt Annoyed by someone criticizing your drinking?
Have you ever felt Guilty about how much you drink?
Have you ever had a drink as an Eye-opener or to get rid or a hangover?

If you answer "yes" to 2 or more of these questions, you may have a problem with alcohol.

NotSoThinLizzy · 30/04/2019 22:41

My mum used to say this "I dont drink during the day so I'm not an alcoholic" well guess who ended up in rehab and is now 3 years sober.... worth trying a couple of nights to see how you get on

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 30/04/2019 22:42

Alcoholic often have little quirks/rules that they use to prove they’re not dependent

jessicawessica · 30/04/2019 22:44

What is the difference between a heavy drinker and an alcoholic?
And how is it possible to not gain weight when drinking a lot of alcohol? Does it depend on the type of alcohol?

MondeoFan · 30/04/2019 22:45

I was with someone that used to do this. A bottle every single night. Then started opening a second bottle and drinking 1/4 that too. He was/is def an alcoholic

Tumbleweed101 · 30/04/2019 22:46

I enjoy a drink in the evening. it’s a way to relax after a busy day.

However I think it’s more to do with feeling alone and bored. I’m a single mum so can’t go out and socialise (my teens have cars so have emergency transport and drivers to hand if something ever happened). I feel that if I don’t drink at home I’d be tee-total as can’t go out. I’m currently finding it hard to care about myself because nobody cares about me anyway (prob not true but how it feels). Just need to deal with those issues really.

I went away with friends for three weeks last year (non drinkers) and didn’t touch a drop which proves to me the issue of feeling alone is the trigger.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 30/04/2019 22:48

Like others have said already, the fact that you have posted about on here, not to ask us but just to tell us how much you like drinking, is a hint of a touch of a warning sign.

I drank about that much, sometimes a bit more, for a long time. Mainly at home but on a rare night out I would drink much more.

I did have an inkling, a feeling, at the back of my head, tucked ahead somewhere...that it wasn't a good thing and that I might actually have a problem. But it was really easy to ignore that.

And it was easy to carry on so I did...until it got to a stage where I knew something wrong but by then I wasn't in control of it any more, it was in charge of me. I had a bit of a breakdown and had a LOT of help to stop.

If I'd carried on...I'd probably be needing a drink in the mornings by now.

That's me and not you OP. But sometimes it helps to hear other people's stories.

Rabbitmug · 30/04/2019 22:48

OP?

2cats2many · 30/04/2019 22:48

It's excessive and not OK.

And for anyone who answers that it is OK and they do it too... Guess what? It's excessive and not OK for you either.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 30/04/2019 22:51

I hope you're okay, OP. I think you already know this is a problem. xxx

Bumper1969 · 30/04/2019 22:55

Good for you.

Bumper1969 · 30/04/2019 23:00

Good for you. And enjoy it. If you're in good health, why not? No pleasure is worth giving up for a fee extra years stuck in Arse_Upon -Sea with some of the posters on here. Bet Winston Churchill who was by all accounts a very heavy daily drinker, agrees. Cheers Op!

Mum21beauty · 30/04/2019 23:04

Wasn't too sure how to respond to some comments . I guess it's a cry out for help as I'm too nervous to speak to someone I know. Thank you for some of the supportive and guiding comments. Some of the other comments have upset me but I guess that's what you get on here

Jaxhog · 30/04/2019 23:07

That is a lot of alcohol imho. As it's FIVE TIMES the recommended limit, I would guess it is shortening your life quite a bit.

TeddybearBaby · 30/04/2019 23:08

You’ve spoken about feeling stressed at work and getting relief from the wine. Maybe try some other things too..... exercise is good or I like meditation 💐. Maybe talking therapy. Whatever works for you, we’re all different!

Jaxhog · 30/04/2019 23:09

I think you should get some help to cut down. Al Anon or your Doc would be a good start. Good Luck!

ssd · 30/04/2019 23:09

Op, please have a read if the Brave Babes threads in the relationships section. Just had a nosy even if you don't want to join in. There's tolerance and understanding there, you are getting your arse handed to you on a plate here and I don't think it's what you're needing.
Please just look it up.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 30/04/2019 23:11

Your GP can sign post and refer to alcohol services. Good luck

Jaxhog · 30/04/2019 23:15

I've drunk drunk loads and II'm in mid fifties and am the most healthy person I know

Mybe you're the exception, but when did you last have a liver enzyme test? I'm betting your liver is in bad shape!

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 30/04/2019 23:15

Well done OP, it's hard to admit that something might be wrong.

There is lots of help out there if you want it and none of it is judgemental.

Graphista · 30/04/2019 23:20

Dustyroad For one thing you're making a lot of assumptions about other posters, for another alcoholism DOES have horrific effects on the rest of the family as all addictions do but particularly substance addictions as they often bring out the worst behaviour that person is prone too and for another quite honestly it sounds like you have your own issues with alcohol and that's why you're reacting as you are.

"Yeeh hun, fuck da haterz, lifes 2 short to not die bleeding internally." That's if you're lucky!

My alcoholic father has been in excruciating pain daily as a result for over 20 years.

That's even WITH scary amounts of morphine and many other painkillers, regularly so bad he passes out. His liver is one of the few organs unaffected weirdly - most others are though plus he's lost most of his sight, hearing and mental capacity too.

He was a fit, healthy, intelligent
man before the drink took hold.

He was never able to quit by his own decision, instead he became incapacitated and mum refused to buy it for him.

He's not the only addict in my family so I've seen and experienced the effects of addiction. It destroys health, families, careers, friendships...

supersop60 · 30/04/2019 23:23

Something is obviously bothering you OP, or you wouldn't have posted.
If you NEED a drink, there's a problem.

Graphista · 30/04/2019 23:24

Op you don't have to speak to someone you know, not straight away at least. There are loads of organisations, helplines etc that are very experienced in helping people struggling with addiction for that first step.

But I have to say I think you'll find that those close to you already know or at least suspect.

Please please don't end up like my dad.
