to ask for christening gifts for goddaughter?

Hi all,

I’ve been asked to be a godparent and the christening is coming up!

So...what would be a good christening gift for my goddaughter? She’ll be around 9 months at the time of the christening.

I’m currently thinking something she can have when she’s older, like a silver bracelet or something like a memento.

Any suggestions?

Some kind of charm bracelet you can add to as she gets older?

NannyR · 29/04/2019 19:57

I'd buy a good children's bible - the Lion storyteller bible or the Jesus storybook bible are both nice ones with good illustrations.

TheTrollFairy · 29/04/2019 19:58

You could get a charm bracelet for her, that way it can be added to for events (birthdays, passing driving test etc)

Pearl necklace (adult sized), heirloom quality leather jewelry box, nice Bible, silver bracelet....

ThePerturbedPenguin · 29/04/2019 20:05

Following this as I am in the same dilemma! At the moment I am thinking a professional photo shoot of baby or a piece of artwork.

ThePerturbedPenguin · 29/04/2019 20:05

Or a special copy of nurse rhymes

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 29/04/2019 20:06

Engraved bracelet for adulthood and a nice edition of a children’s book.

John Lewis do some gorgeous silver money boxes that make great Christening gifts

I bought mine £100 worth of premium bonds (or, rather, a cheque for £100 and a bond application form, as you can't buy them yourself for someone else's child). I took the view that they might win a prize, or they could cash it in when older if they wanted to.

Silver engraved photo frame or silver moneybox...
Or a beautiful hardback book - Tales of Peter Rabbit or some classic...with a lovely message inside.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 20:10

In the past I have bought as christening gifts: a Roman coin, a wooden musical jewellery box, books for different stages of your life, and a cheque!

I bought a rose bush for my goddaughter. I was lucky that there was a variety of rose with the same name as her (although if you Google it there are roses with most girls' names!). Then I had a little plaque engraved with a message that I would always be there to help her grow.

TrySinging · 29/04/2019 20:20

Oh, I like the rose bush and premium bond ideas.

Tiredmum100 · 29/04/2019 20:21

I bought my god daughter the complete set of peter rabbit books from the book people. Think it was about £35. What's your budget?

tanpestryfirescreen · 29/04/2019 20:55

Roman or greek coin- they can take them to school in KS2 and owning a piece of history that will maintain its value at least.

ManchesterBees · 29/04/2019 20:59

As pp, I got my god daughter a silver charm bracelet and had a E, birth stone and cross put on. Each year I buy another charm to highlight her year e.g ballet shoes, pencil and rainbow. It's a great give for years to come!

Lovely presents (often personalized) can be found on notonthehighstreet:

DD received a personalised Mason Pearson hairbrush, which she uses very day. DS received a fountain pen, which he also uses for homework every day. Also very cute are gifts (especially for baby girls) can be doing here: https://www.mercimamanboutique.com/christenings-and-communions

3in4years · 29/04/2019 21:20

Not a money box. We were given about 4 per child at each christening! A nice book or poem is better.

homeishere · 29/04/2019 21:36

Some good suggestions here. Thanks all. I haven’t really considered my budget...up to £100 I suppose.

Depends on budget.
Normally you'd expect the Godparents to buy a bible or book of bible stories (but talk to other Godparents as don't want to duplicate).

I think Premium bonds is an excellent idea (though you do need to buy £100 minimum which will be too expensive for most).

MaryShelley1818 · 29/04/2019 21:40

My Goddaughter was Christened last year at 7mths old.
I bought her a personalised engraved silver photo frame with a special message, a copy of “You Are Special” book by Max Lucado and a small pink bunny cuddly toy.

Mammyofonlyone · 29/04/2019 21:45

I bought my goddaughter a book of poetry and on the inside cover wrote her a note directing her to a particular poem and how it translated into everything I wished for her as her life evolved. If you want the deets

If you’re buying a bible, the graphic bible is brilliant and might actually get read! Add something like a charm bracelet / gold cross/ sundial (I gave a brass one with ‘I count only the sunny hours ‘ engraved on it) and you’re good to go...
