to ask for christening gifts for goddaughter?

Hi all,

I’ve been asked to be a godparent and the christening is coming up!

So...what would be a good christening gift for my goddaughter? She’ll be around 9 months at the time of the christening.

I’m currently thinking something she can have when she’s older, like a silver bracelet or something like a memento.

Any suggestions?

One of my favourite gifts my DD got was a beautifully engraved quaich; it's a Gaelic drinking cup usually in silver or pewter.

I’m not sure how ‘christening appropriate’ it may or may not be, but when children close to me are born I buy them a bottle of champagne or nice wine. By the time they’re 18 or 21 it’ll be a nice treat or something they could probably get some money for should they want.

Pardonwhat · 29/04/2019 21:56

I’ve mistakenly decided that my suggestion definitely isn’t christening appropriate Wine as you were Grin

Ds got given a nice bible by the church when he was christened so would maybe avoid that or at least check as it’s not something you need lots of copies of.
I’d also avoid getting something engraved unless you know the correct details (ds ended up with a silver christening certificate holder tube thing that is the wrong size and has the wrong details engraved on it... plus I keep it with all the other documents for the dc rather than have a silver nicknack to hold it. Every time I think of it I just think how the person who gave it was trying to be thoughtful but missed and has ended up giving something that ended up at the bottom of the cupboard.

I’d give something token for now (Noah’s ark, classic kids books) and something for the future - premium bond, jewellery, bottle of port that will be ready for their 21st, etc.

Thanks all. I’m leaning towards a silver bracelet. Either a simple and stylish bangle with an engraving or a charm bracelet (which I hadn’t considered before) that I can add to over the upcoming years.

I might buy a nice bottle of wine too...for me!

Both my dds were given little silver bangles as Christening presents.
Not a great present, tbh .
Babies don't wear jewellery (well, not in my house) and then it is too small for them when they are grown up Confused
They've just sat in a box in a cupboard all that time.
Better to go with something related to the supporting them to grow in their Christian Faith or something that might be useful when they are a baby / toddler or some investment for when they are older and can say "HomeisHere got me that for my Christening" - perhaps something like a picture or a lovely book type of thing.

I gave my goddaughter a bible stories book for children & a bracelet from Merci Maman, one of the Liberty band style ones.

homeishere · 29/04/2019 22:56

Ooo I’ll buy her some of HackPowerPro’s time.
Hmm

@homeishere hackowers time is magical as from his other posts he has a wife and a husband 😂 1/10 for effort.

stucknoue · 29/04/2019 23:04

I would buy a silver bracelet as a keepsake and some really nice books eg the Helen Oxenbury illustrated Alice in wonderland or Beatrix potter set if they don't already have them. Another idea is a st Christopher or a cross. Kind of depends how religious the parents are though

OhTheTiles · 29/04/2019 23:04

@mummmy2017 that sounds an awesome idea! Where did you get that from/is it properly official?

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 29/04/2019 23:05

What about books like ‘the girl who lost her name’? There are several different ones on the website, but you add their names to the story and can have a message printed on the first page. Just bought one for dp’s niece and it was lovely.

Purpletigers · 29/04/2019 23:07

A Carr silver photo frame . Should be able to get a small one in your budget . Avoid money boxes , they’ll get 20

stucknoue · 29/04/2019 23:08

Oh and fil bought illustrated psalms but she was 10, choosing to be baptised!

Purpletigers · 29/04/2019 23:09

Something like this

to ask for christening gifts for goddaughter?
Dropitlikeitshot · 29/04/2019 23:12

@homeishere 😂😂😂 Deffo the best use of your money that!

I got DC a gold engraved pendant necklace for their Baptism, it’s very beautiful and not too OTT that they couldn’t wear it every day when they’re older.
We’ve popped into into their 18th Birthday box (we add something new every year) so they can have a beautiful gift and keepsake on that day.
