& if you did how much/often? Or what your opinions are on moderate drinking during pregnancy?

Can I just ask something - I've always wondered, why anyone who drinks in pregnancy usually waits til after first trimester? Are there special extra risks in the first trimester? Regretting a glass of wine I had at Christmas!!!

I haven't been drinking apart from said glass of wine, because I thought abstaining was easier than doing lots of reading hehehe

ChandelierLizzid · 29/04/2019 19:29

(Christmas was around the end of my first trimester)

sighrollseyes · 29/04/2019 19:34

Nothing until 3rd trimester, then I had 3 or 4 ciders in the third trimester (1 a fortnight).

Cherylshaw · 29/04/2019 19:34

@SocksInPeril
No amount of alcohol is deemed safe and new studies are showing that even one glass of alcohol damages a babies brain nerves

AxCap · 29/04/2019 19:35

Nothing with any pregnancy (6 but only 2 dc). I discovered just how annoying DH and my friends were drunk during DC1 pregnancy thanks to 5 weddings/hen parties and 2 30ths 🙈 was a looooong 8 months (preemie)

TheDarkPassenger · 29/04/2019 19:37

I didn’t fin out I was pregnant either time til I was over 12 weeks and drank and smoked and smoked weed both times. Stopped as soon as I found out though. Had two glasses of wine through pregnancy with daughter, now I have first hand experience of children and babies with FASD I wouldn’t even touch a drop. I don’t judge those who do though, as the reason for meeting these babies is often were supporting mum but it still put me off for life. Our local health centre does a free FASD awareness course, could you take that? It works for some of our users. No judgement and I hope you feel better soon

TheDarkPassenger · 29/04/2019 19:38

Something like that I mean, obviosuly don’t assume you live near me Grin

Shmithecat2 · 29/04/2019 19:39

Nothing in the first trimester. A glass of champagne at a friends wedding in the second trimester. The odd glass after that.

jackparlabane · 29/04/2019 19:41

My first pregnancy, I did a test on NYE and then when it was negative, drowned my sorrows - I was at least 8 weeks at that point. I had a small glass a couple times a week after that - I sought medical advice before a trip to France around 18 weeks and both the MW and GP recommended a small glass with dinner.

This seemed to be expected in France - when I managed to explain why we wouldn't be sharing a bottle, the waiters would nod sagely and return with a very small glass of excellent wine for me (DP got the house red!)

With dd I felt sick for ages so didn't drink, but there would have been the odd glass later. I don't drink more than a glass or two, once a week, anyway.

ginandtonic78 · 29/04/2019 19:41

Totally not. If u can't go months with no alcohol for the sake of your baby then your sad as said above If it's diluted what's even the point of still drinking it? Get non alcoholic. It's not like it's going to benefit you in anyway.

Thatsnotmyotter · 29/04/2019 19:41

I had a small glass of Prosecco at my wedding when I was 29 weeks. I’m not really much of a drinker anyway (go months without anything) so any more than that and I probably would have started to feel the effects of the alcohol which I felt was a bit off. I had the odd sip of other people’s beer/wine/cider occasionally.

Tobebythesea · 29/04/2019 19:41

First pregnancy I had half a glass of Bucks Fizz on Christmas Day at 7 months. During this pregnancy I plan to have a few sips of champagne at a wedding when I’m 8 months. Nothing else.

FruitCider · 29/04/2019 19:59

  • @SocksInPeril * No amount of alcohol is deemed safe and new studies are showing that even one glass of alcohol damages a babies brain nerves

Yeah... because you clearly have a good grasp of biology and the research behind alcohol in pregnancy with your excellent knowledge of "brain nerves" Confused

Sculpin · 29/04/2019 20:01

When I was pregnant it was before the current 'no alcohol' advice. I don't drink much anyway, and I cut down even further during pregnancy. Just the odd glass of wine.

jcq17 · 29/04/2019 20:03

I've had half a glass of
Prosecco twice so far and enjoyed it I'm 28 weeks.

SocksInPeril · 29/04/2019 20:04

Cherylshaw can you link to these new studies? The last advice (from 2017) was that there are very limited studies on the harm of light drinking so I’d be interesting in reading something that now says otherwise.

GPatz · 29/04/2019 20:10

'If u can't go months with no alcohol for the sake of your baby then your sad'

Boo boo.

bluebluezoo · 29/04/2019 20:11

I had a proper craving for lager Blush.

Was quite pregnant in high summer and gave in and had a couple of cold halves. Wonderful.

I hate bloody lager too Grin when not pregnant. I don’t normally drink at all in fact.

Cba to look it up but i wonder if there were any studies from years ago when pregnant women were prescribed Guinness for the iron content. Surely if alcohol were harmful on a greater level all those women having half a Guinness a day for their pregnancies would have shown something noticeable?

TheBulb · 29/04/2019 20:13

Two glasses of champagne, both on major celebratory occasions.

Graphista · 29/04/2019 20:14

I'd have thought the seemingly accepted fact of "we don't know for definite how much is safe" because it would be unethical to test on pregnant mothers, yet we DO know alcohol is a toxin that is passed through to the baby, and we can clearly see the effects when drinking is excessive, that this would be reason enough not to take the risk.

For me having had mc and other issues with pregnancy I don't understand why women would risk making things unnecessarily more risky for the baby and/or themselves.

Unless you're an addict it's not difficult, and frankly if you are an addict a pregnancy is ill advised anyway until that's dealt with.

Smoggle · 29/04/2019 20:15

Yes, I did with all three. After the first three months I had 1-2 units, once sometimes twice a week.

I am a healthy weight and was in my 20s though so I guess the risks balance each other out...

FannyWork · 29/04/2019 20:18

I didn’t drink a thing. I find it very hard to stop once I start so that was the best thing for me. I don’t judge other people for doing differently unless they’re abusing it and getting blotto every day.

Apparently you really have to drink a lot to cause FAS and that is a truly awful condition. Women who drink to those levels should get far more support in the pregnancies up to and including residential 24 hr support if they want it.

Unfinishedkitchen · 29/04/2019 20:18

1 glass of champagne at a wedding and I made it last all evening. That was it. Big parties/drinker prior to pregnancy but I didn’t want to take the risk.

Tinyteatime · 29/04/2019 20:23

Towards the end of my 2nd pregnancy I had a small glass (and I mean small) of wine per week. I wanted to and don’t believe that it was any risk. On these threads about drinking small amounts in pregnancy people always mention FAS. From what I’ve read (and this may be out of date) true FAS appears in babies of a small subset of heavy drinkers (not all). No one knows why this is. I understand there’s a spectrum of it but it’s not possible to give your baby FAS from very light drinking, at least I’ve never seen any evidence for this.

FromEden · 29/04/2019 20:23

There isn’t any evidence (one way or the other) on whether small amounts of alcohol is harmful

Well there kind of is- the fact that in every single study on maternal alcohol use ever conducted, there have never been negative effects found in children whose mothers drank lightly or moderately during pregnancy. Never. All the evidence points to chronic alcohol consumption or heavy binge drinking being what causes problems, and even then it takes a lot.
