I'm starting a new job which requires me to put my hair up. I've literally (well, with the exception of going swimming!) never bothered doing this! I've watched some YouTube videos claiming to be easy - not to me they aren't!

Please help:)

How long is your hair?

I would say the easiest would be a ponytail, or a messy bun.

MorwenTheWitch · 26/04/2019 21:34

Usually if I’m putting mine up for practical tasks I just plait it and then wind the plait around its base until I’ve made a bun at the top of my neck, then secure it with bobby pins.

It’ll depend on your hair length and type though. Mine’s waist length and super thick.

swapsicles · 26/04/2019 21:39

Up as in out of the way or an updo which is styled more?
I'm hopeless with updo's far too fiddly and my arms ache after a couple of minutes so personally tend to stick to a simple ponytail with a bobble or with a clip it just varies where I place the ponytail usually.
How long is your hair?

How long or thick is your hair, does it have a wave or is it dead straight? Makes a big difference I think. For my (thick wavy hair which has to be tamed with ghd to wear down) the easiest bet is a bun - Bobble a low pony then twist the pony round and round and coil it round the bobble, then either another bobble or pins or even a bun hairnet when it was shorter.

My SIL swears by a chignon and seems able to assemble in 40 seconds flat but I can try for hours and still fail!

If your hair is fine a suspect a shed load of mousse will help any style to grip (thinking about it I might have used mousse on my buns in the past, never bother now my hair is longer).

Once I have ghd straightened my hair I don’t think I could make it stay up, as it would be too silky, so you might need to mess around with various versions of damp/unstyled hair to find a style you can do.

I’ve also read about a French braid with the bottom tucked back in up the inside, which sounds smart, but I can’t do French braids very well on myself!

Depends a bit by what you mean by up but presuming you mean right up ir not just tied back. Big clamp shell clast. Gather hair together at nape of neck. Twist round, fold up head. Put one hand at top, let remaining hair fall back down. Stick clamp shell over, gathering stray hairs. Spray loads of hairspray over to secure. practice a few times. It's much easier with hair that hasn't been washed for a day or two.

Gibson tuck. Have a look on YouTube. It's incredibly simple and works on any hair from about shoulder length. Looks like a proper up do too.

homemadegin · 26/04/2019 22:06

I am so rubbish at my own hair. Great at my Dnieces.

One I can do and gets loads of compliments as fancy for work, but is easy goes like this.

Brush hair with normal middle parting. Section into 2 bunches. Release one bunch. Start at forehead with two small sections and twist over each other. Once you have twisted once bring another clump of hair in. Do this all the way down and secure with bobble.

Do same to other bunch. Then take both twisted bunches and roll or twist into knot bun at back.

Looks like you have French plaited both sides but takes minutes. I find it works best with wet hair.

southbucks77 · 26/04/2019 22:10

I wish I knew. I have long, thick hair which is still naturally blonde despite being in my 40s therefore I’m reluctant to cut it. However it’s annoying and in the way. I feel it’s so lazy to tie it back in a bobble but gave no idea how to make it suit me.

Hairdont · 26/04/2019 22:12

Thank you so much for the replies. It has to be up up - so not a pony tail, more formal than that.

My hair is below my shoulders, looks thick but really isn't, and is wavy. It's a bugger!

Bun.

Hairdont · 26/04/2019 22:13

Herja that sounds good, I'll take a look.

Homemadegin I'll give that a try thank you but got to say it sounds tricky!

That doesn't sound simple lol. Maybe I'm confused after a Wine Grin

  1. Pull back from your ears into a mid level pony tail.

Hold it with your left hand, loop your right index finger around and start loosely twisting until it starts to curl back on itself.

Wind the end around.

Secure with hairband, clip and/or hairgrips.

  1. Pull into a low pony tail.

Hold it with your left hand, place your right thumb side against the back of your head and use your left hand to fold your hair over your right hand until you can grasp the ends between your right fingers. Gently roll your hand so that it's palm against your head. Pin in place.

Greenteandchives · 26/04/2019 22:28

Pull it into a pony tail, twist and fold over the top bit and stick a claw on.
Easy.

Snuffalo · 26/04/2019 22:35

What are 'bobbles' and why are adult women wearing them in their hair? Anyway, If you're trying to look professional, I'd avoid whatever on earth a 'bobble' is and go with covered elastics in the same colour as your hair, and some hairpins/grips for the flyaway bits. A very simple gold, silver, or tortoise-shell barrette or clip could work, too.

optimisticpessimist01 · 26/04/2019 22:36

Backcomb the crown of your head to get it puffy at volumous, leave some front bits not back combed to neaten it all out, put your hair in a low pony, backcomb the pony tail then twist round put it in a low bun with a bobble and grips holding it in place. I always get compliments when I do this, very formal

Iltavilli · 26/04/2019 22:38

Genuinely appalling that there are workplace environments which demand certain hairstyles.

(Work in a very professional environment)

Marriedwithchildren5 · 26/04/2019 22:38

A doughnut does the job. So easy, if you're feeling up for it leave a stranď of hair to wrap around it to hide the 'bobble'

optimisticpessimist01 · 26/04/2019 22:38

Ignore the bobble snob. Elastic bands damage and break your hair. Plus who the fuck judges other people for using bobbles Grin

Covered elastic = bobble

Moongirl10 · 26/04/2019 22:42

@Snuffalo a covered elastic IS a bobble. Maybe you call them something different but I’m from Northern England and we say bobble for any kind of hair tie.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/04/2019 22:43

@Snuffalo are you in North America? Guessing so as you suggested barrettes, Bobbles are what we call hair elastics in the uk, they come in all colours and are very suitable for adult women to use to tie their hair up.

I like to gather hair in a low ponytail, twist it all, flip it up and gather it furthe up the back of your head and secure with a large clip. Try and tuck the loose end into thr clip too for a neater finish.

PinkiOcelot · 26/04/2019 22:45

Snuffalo, you’ve just described a bobble.
Can I ask what Planet you’ve just arrived from?!
