Cake-gate

I work in an office environment, in a team of around 20. Before the Easter weekend, I was chatting in the staff room on a break about how I've recently really got into baking, and one of my colleagues jokingly said that she wouldn't mind if I bought some cake to work for her to try. I promised I'd bring some home made cakes in after Easter.

Fast forward to today. I take in four different homemade cakes. I also took in some little vegan cake bites from Tesco, as we have 2 vegans in the office and I wanted them to be able to eat something nice too (everything I baked had flour/eggs in)

One of the vegans approached me at lunch, and told me that she was really disappointed that I hadn't made the effort to home bake anything vegan, and that I had promised homemade cakes, so I should have provided that for everyone. She said she didn't like the vegan cakes I'd bought from Tesco, and that she was fed up with being left out of team lunches/treats.

I was a bit taken aback, so apologised. But the more I think about it, the more I think she was actually the unreasonable one...

Thoughts?

“Anything”! Not “anyone”

😂

Turnitaroundagain · 25/04/2019 17:34

She was rude but why not make vegan cake? Very easy and still taste great, healthier and no risk of curdling like with butter and eggs. And saying ‘this ones vegan’ means you can be a little bit smug

Pinkpeanut27 · 25/04/2019 17:37

I think she was really rude , vegan cakes are tricky and often contain ingredients that you may not have in . It’s not like you forgot her .
I’d just ignore her or ask her to bring some vegan cakes in for everyone to try

NicolaC17 · 25/04/2019 17:49

I’ve made a vegan cake before and spent the best part of £20 buying substitutes - never again. Apparently it tasted nice but it looked rather unappetising. She should be thankful you thought of her in the first place.

Giraffey1 · 25/04/2019 17:54

Of course your colleague was rude and entitled. There was no obligation on you to make vegan cakes, or any cakes, for that matter! You were extra thoughtful and your vegan colleague seemed to have totally overlooked this. I wouldn’t bother in future.

arseabouttit · 25/04/2019 17:54

As she will no doubt appreciate, adopting a strictly vegan diet involves quite a lot of effort & research to make it interesting, tasty and varied unless you want to eat nothing but fruit and veg for the rest of your life. Making things from scratch that resemble non-vegan foods (like a cake baked with eggs) takes practice.

For this reason (and the fact you have only just started baking non-vegan cakes) she is most definitely a raging CF.

hiyababy · 25/04/2019 17:57

I'm can an often get left out of the cake and treats. I'd be really grateful that you made the effort and bought vegan cakes.

MyToothPain · 25/04/2019 18:03

Congratulations on working with a living, breath cliche Grin

MyToothPain · 25/04/2019 18:07

This lady can help you with you future vegan baking:

What exactly did you buy that cost £20? Confused.

BentCoppersOnly · 25/04/2019 18:07

I’m petty so I’d make a loud announcement to the office that I won’t be making cakes again as I can’t seem to please everyone and it’s not worth the negative atmosphere it is causing. Make sure they know who’s responsible for no future cakes. But then I am I can be VERY petty Wink

BentCoppersOnly · 25/04/2019 18:09

That being said I’ve had a gorgeous vegan blueberry and lemon cake and I couldn’t tell the difference whatsoever, so if you’re feeling kind there are loads of easy vegan options!

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 25/04/2019 18:09

The only thing I have ever baked is chocolate chip cookies but this thread has actually inspired me to start baking. I am undecided whether this sudden inspiration to start a new hobby is a good thing or a bad thing...

MirandaGoshawk · 25/04/2019 18:10

YANBU.

I have a vegan DD and have learnt loads off her - one thing is that apparently the juice from a can of chickpeas can be used in place of eggs - it's supposed to make successful meringues. Oils (such as coconut) can replace butter. But why should you bother? Your workmate sounds horrible.

alligatorsmile · 25/04/2019 18:13

I'm vegan and don't get to join in with most office cakes and treats but it's MY CHOICE to be vegan, it's no-one else's obligation to cater to me!

She might be one of those vegans, though. The ones who are naturally arseholes, they just happen to be wearing the vegan badge at the moment.

MyToothPain · 25/04/2019 18:13

Is this your colleague?

KittensinaBlender · 25/04/2019 18:14

She wasn’t left out, she opted out.

Veganism is a choice. A valid choice but a choice non the less and you don’t get to see your arse because other people don’t take the time and money to cater for dietary whims.

She’s a cheeky fucker, alright.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2019 18:14

How often has she brought in home-made cakes for everyone? And how many times has she brought in non-vegan cakes? If she chooses not to eat the lovely cakes you made, that's on her. I think you were very thoughtful to buy some vegan cakes, OP, and she is being massively unreasonable. You didn't have to make any cakes at all!

NicolaC17 · 25/04/2019 18:15

Egg substitute, dairy free butter, dairy free chocolate, milk substitute etc. Egg substitute in the only shop that sells it near me is £5.50 alone.

DeniseRoyal · 25/04/2019 18:15

I am astonished at the outright cheeky fuckery of some people, wow. Shock

Nearly47 · 25/04/2019 18:17

I don't eat gluten. Can tolerate small quantities. A couple times in my birthday people given the task of organising cake at work forgot or didn't know (usually junior admin staff) that and bought normal cake. I've never dreamt of complaining and even had a tiny slice so they wouldn't feel so mortified when someone pointed it out. Your colleague is ridiculous. People like that give vegans a bad name

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2019 18:17

I’ve had a gorgeous vegan blueberry and lemon cake and I couldn’t tell the difference whatsoever, so if you’re feeling kind there are loads of easy vegan options!

Nope. You had ONE nice cake. You have no idea how easy or not it was to make, or how many other options there are.

wizzywig · 25/04/2019 18:17

Give her an apple in a fairy cake case

CasanovaFrankenstein · 25/04/2019 18:18

I would have been grateful, there is never anything for me (benefit as I don’t chomp it all)) plus tbh I wouldn’t always trust people if it was homemade. Ignore!

BertrandRussell · 25/04/2019 18:19

“I’ve made a vegan cake before and spent the best part of £20 buying substitutes - never again.”

Well, that was a bit bonkers of you! Did you not google some recipes before you went shopping?
