To think some people have breath that smells like dog shit?

I was just discussing this with my husband.

Over the last fortnight, I have come across 3 people with breath so foul it smells like dog shit, or in the case of one of them - cow shit.

Can they not smell it themselves? And what is it that gives people halitosis that doesn’t just smell like stale breath, but actual shit? Is it the smell of their stomachs? I know it’s not teeth hygiene for one of them as she brushes her teeth about 6 times a day. Why don’t their families mention it? If it was one of mine, I would tell them straight away & I know they’d do the same for me.

Is it a medical condition, this breath from the abattoir? Anyone know?

I had stinky tonsil stones for 20 years. Got so frustrated, saved the evidence in a container and took it along for my dr to sniff, and she immediately referred me for tonsillectomy (NHS). The op was so worth it!

Also when one of my wisdom teeth was pushing through, I got pericoronitis (gum infection), and that was truly foul smelling.

I’m a delight.

DH did have dog poo breath after eating smoked cheese once. I had him checking his shoes, carpets everywhere. 🤮

It can be caused by tooth decay. A friend of mine had it when she had huge problems with an infected tooth. It was awful.

I taught a kid with sick breath, years ago. He wasn't bulimic, or ill. I always wondered why. Nice lad, but I had to hold my breath if I went to check his work in class!

Ds, who is 8, had breath that smelt like poo and mothballs. He had bleeding stomach ulcers and unexplained lesions in his stomach and oesophagus and very bad constipation, which the Dr said caused the awful smell. It was very difficult.

The funniest was a colleague expressing surprise at the supervisors terrible breathe, saying, “..and he’s got a partner as well!”. It made me laugh. This guy had that white elastic spit in the corners of his mouth as well, the full works.

My ex's lack of dental hygeine affected my health and my job. I'd lie awake at night with his stinking breath filling the whole room and was too tired to work properly the next day.
When we went on holiday the entire car was full of the stink.
It was utterly exhausting, we'd have row after row about it and when he did bother to floss and clean his breath didn't stink at all - which wasn't often.
It must have been awful for his colleagues sitting in a room with that all day, it would have made me angry.
I floss, waterpik, use an interdental brush and an electric toothbrush because if your breath doesn't need to stink why would you inflict that on other people.
Serves him right he hasn't found another girlfriend.

And yes, I have just breathed into my hand to double check I don't have dog shit breath.

In ds's case it was because the bowel became obstructed, so poo got backed up this would cause him to vomit, in his case this would combine with old blood. It can also cause bad breath because of the smell of undigested food in the gut.

Maybe it's because our own experience of one reason for very bad breath was really awful, but I don't see the hilarity in this thread.

No hilarity - genuine interest in what causes it and how some people seem never to address it or notice it - serious medical issues aside. And I would wager that most people with faecal breath don't have a serious medical condition.

There seem to be many causes.

I don’t know about shit-breath but someone I know smells so bad it makes me gag. Sort of a shit/sweaty vag smell. It’s not BO.

I'm on medication that gives me dry mouth. I hope I don't have this, but fear I might. My interdental cleaning often smells rank and I worry that's what my breath smells like. I also regularly skip breakfast and have coffee instead. I use mouthwash and sugar free gum a lot and drink loads of water too, and never miss a dental visit. So not much I can do. I cannot change my meds.

I smell loads of people’s breaths, I think it’s more unusual to not have bad breath

My ex was a coffee drinker and drank no water. His mouth was like the Sahara and he smelt of stale coffee. I think that's what put me off coffee come to think of it
I've noticed a particular smell from those who have lots of metal fillings. Sister, brother in law and an ex-friend. I can't describe it but it's not like poo. It's vile though.
Next day garlic breath is kind of sweet and foul and makes me want to run away if I'm on a train or bus with someone with it.
I have a very sensitive sense of smell combined with misophonia so I'm a nightmare.

I'm now paranoid about my own breath as I don't floss Tonight all I can taste is onions as for some stupid reason I thought I'd have raw onion on my veggie burger. It's a good job I sleep alone

Here's a test for you to test your own breath.
Lick your wrist.... A long lick that ensures the saliva from the middle of your tongue coats you wrist while you lick it.

Leave it to air dry 3-5 minutes.

Now smell the sweet aroma.

Now tell me; does your own breath smell of roses? Get your friends to try for a % of who has lovely smelling breath.

Then think about the fact that we are as good as animals and as such will smell as such. Reality check time.

There's a condition called TMAU which sufferers don't realise they have until they get bullied about it, since they can't always smell it themselves and their families are used to the scent.

It smells of faeces, rotten eggs, rotting rubbish, fish etc

After being bullied, they're hyperaware they have it but can't lock themselves in a tower and have to work and socialise. Pulling them to one to tell them to freshen up doesn't help as the smell doesn't go away
I'm just thinking the person you're talking about might have this because faeces is very specific to the condition, I've never caught a whiff of breath so bad it actually stunk of shit!

My EXH had dreadful breath, despite regular brushing and visits to dentist.Couldn't bear to be too close to him.Turned out he was suffering from diverticulitis.Had an abscess, ended up having a Hartmanns procedure.Now his breath is fine.
