To think some people have breath that smells like dog shit?

I was just discussing this with my husband.

Over the last fortnight, I have come across 3 people with breath so foul it smells like dog shit, or in the case of one of them - cow shit.

Can they not smell it themselves? And what is it that gives people halitosis that doesn’t just smell like stale breath, but actual shit? Is it the smell of their stomachs? I know it’s not teeth hygiene for one of them as she brushes her teeth about 6 times a day. Why don’t their families mention it? If it was one of mine, I would tell them straight away & I know they’d do the same for me.

Is it a medical condition, this breath from the abattoir? Anyone know?

I used to be able to diagnose kids coming down with tonsillitis by their breath. It's a very distinctive smell.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 23/04/2019 14:53

I know I sound boring because I’m a hygienist but honestly the number one cause of bad breath especially “dog” / shit breath is not cleaning between the teeth.
Lots of other factors also cause bad breath including tonsil stones and taking some anti depressants because they cause dry mouth.
If you need convincing and have not cleaned between your teeth recently stick a tepe brush or a bit of floss between your own back teeth before you brush and have a sniff. Blush

Stormwhale · 23/04/2019 14:55

A man the other day had the most disgusting breath. He was croaky, so I'm going to assume had a sore throat, but also had recently had a fag. The combination of both was one of the most revolting smells I have ever come across. It nearly made me heave.

KinkyFink · 23/04/2019 15:00

My STBXH had awful breath, the kind of smell that comes out from between the teeth on the floss - he claimed the hygienist told him he was fine and yet he still stank so much it actually made me angry!

Willowtreecottage · 23/04/2019 15:01

I work in customer services/ l am struck by the sheer volume of customers with shitty breath! Really revolting!
The more angry they get the more the stench intensifies!
Even if they don’t shout/ l need to stand back!
I agree it’s from not flossing - brushing the tongue etc...
When l lived in America- l didn’t notice it so much, as Americans ( for the most part) floss with wild abandon! Grin

Redlocks28 · 23/04/2019 15:04

The plaque that builds up between the teeth even if you brush well is the most fowl smelling.

My breath is horrific. I brush, clean in between my teeth, scrape my tongue and use anti bacterial mouth wash between brushes. It's been like this since I collapsed and face planted off a raised kerb onto the road. My bottom gum swelled to above the level of my teeth, went grey, and crumbled away entirely. What's left of my lower gum is receded, and has a hole the whole way through so you can see the root of my tooth. I've called weekly since it happened trying to find an NHS dentist with spaces, to no avail. I looked into private and am saving up, but as yet cannot afford it. It's embarrassing and makes me feel dirty, but I fail to see what else I can do.

DaffoDeffo · 23/04/2019 15:11

one of my closest friends is trying to lose weight and is doing that keto diet

he smells utterly vile - I can smell it even sat across a table in a coffee shop

he is dating at the moment so christ knows how women who he's attracted to are putting up with it

lhw92 · 23/04/2019 15:14

I have tonsil stones and they’re revolting!!
I’m saving to get laser cryptolysis but likely won’t be able to afford it for another few years.
I have tried all of the other methods that other people claim get rid of them but nothing worked as I simply have very large crypts in the tonsils Angry

I always floss, clean my tongue well, use an electric toothbrush but the bad breath will come back within a few hours.
Hence, I make sure to always carry sugar free mints, and drink plenty of water. Also, I won’t talk too closely to people

The NHS don’t find laser cryptolysis or have any real suggestions for tonsil stones 🤷‍♀️ I guess it’s seen as trivial but gosh the impact it has on my life is significant. It’s hard to have much self esteem when you know you have bad breath

Hushabyelullaby · 23/04/2019 15:16

The person I know who has this suffers with severe constipation.

lhw92 · 23/04/2019 15:17

*fund not find

loubieloulou · 23/04/2019 15:17

Eugh. I know about this. Is probably gum disease caused by lack of flossing, if you read up on on gingivitis/ periodontitis the foul smell associated with it is projected when speaking. I would say I can smell it 2 foot away when the person is speaking. It's disgusting & I would say it's a common thing as working in an enclosed office environment I am greeted with this quite regularlyConfused

Daily flosser & mouthwash user here .... I don't want the smell of rotten shit coming from my gob thanks Smile

HoustonBess · 23/04/2019 15:17

Health conditions. Or MH conditions and not looking after themselves.

Just be glad it's not you! I don't think anyone would choose to have smelly breath.

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 23/04/2019 15:17

I used to work with a woman like this, it was so bad. We had to get changed in a fairly small room and everyone tried to avoid changing at the same time or just after her as the smell was almost vomit inducing, indeed it was for me when I was pregnant. It made me sick a few times. She's a lovely woman, just has (or had, she might have got it sorted by now) horrific shit breath.

JaneEyre07 · 23/04/2019 15:20

DH has had awful awful breath for about 3 years. He goes to the dentist every 6 months, has a scale and polish and cleans his teeth twice a day. But it's stomach churningly bad.

Interestingly, his front crown broke about 2 months ago, and when having it replaced, the dentist did an xray, which picked up a large pocket of infection where the root was. He's now having to see a specialist about it, and I'm sure that's what his funky breath is due down to.

CoffeeConnoisseur · 23/04/2019 15:21

It’s lack of flossing and most people also need to invest in a tongue scraper, and use it!

ClaraMatilda · 23/04/2019 15:23

I used to get smelly breath. I'd brush my teeth several times a day, use mouthwash, and chew gum when I was away from home, but it still happened. It was embarrassing.

It cleared up after I started going to a private dentist regularly, flossing, and using a tongue scraper. This really wasn't easy for me at first as I had a phobia due to bad experiences in childhood. I hadn't been to a dentist in ten years. No cavities, surprisingly, but so much tartar buildup that no amount of brushing was going to get rid of it.

So yes, I knew my breath could be horrible sometimes, and did what I could to deal with it, but it was a while before I had the courage to get it professionally sorted.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 23/04/2019 15:24

Yup. DHs ex has this. One of my mates did too. Its definitely a thing. And seemingly, quite common

SecretWitch · 23/04/2019 15:32

My uncle had the most appalling breath. When you hugged him, you had to turn your head away. Talking directly to him was a nightmare. My aunt finally dragged him to the physician. He was diagnosed with stomach ulcers and put on a long dose of antibiotic. This seemed to clear the bad breath problem almost 100%.

QueenKubauOfKish · 23/04/2019 15:32

Yes I used to have a boss who had this! She smoked, and drank a lot of coffee all day so I put it down to that.

It was awful when she would lean over me to look at my work - ugh.

I would hate to have this, but luckily I'm fairly sure I don't as my very frank tween DD would tell me in no uncertain terms.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2019 15:34

I agree,it's not flossing ime.

FabledChinhair · 23/04/2019 15:38

Well I don't know op, anything could be going on for them couldn't it. Stomach ulcer, mental health etc. Grow the fuck up.

EdWinchester · 23/04/2019 15:52

I’m thinking it’s down to more than not flossing.

Also, families should really tell each other. When you can smell it across a room, it’s time to mention it.

I have two aunts like this. Absolutely hideous. How do they not know?!

EdWinchester · 23/04/2019 15:58

Yes, apart from the cause, I am intrigued as to how on earth people don’t know!!
