To send my 7 year old to school in unironed uniform?

I really struggle with laundry. I struggle so, so much and I don't know why. I end up just not having the time or being organised enough to put away or iron so my son often goes to primary school in a creased t-shirt. We're not talking slept in creases, just dried crinkled and needs a quick going over creases.

Apart from the creases, my son always goes to school in the correct and washed uniform (I once got up at 5 to hair drier his trousers because I'd forgotton to put a wash on until the night before and that was the only way they'd be dry in time) but ironing always gets the better of me.

We have very few things that need ironing but his school t-shirts do. I bought more expensive iron-free ones but they had the school logo on and got nicked. Strangely his supermarket own brand stuff always finds it's way home.

He's clean, looked after and engaged. We always go to parents evening etc.

Do you look down on parents like me?

Bizarre bizarre, I work full time so never see any other kids and would never judge even if I did!! I iron but my kids tend to scrunch them up on the floor or in a bag so creased for the next day 😂 judge away!!!

You sound quite overwhelmed. I’d be sacking off the ironing. I never iron my daughters uniform; I certainly wouldn’t judge you.

I know I am the exception but I couldn't send anyone out wearing unironed cloths. I will say again, I am nit the norm. I have to iron all bedding, tea towels but not bath towels I'm not completely mad! I love ironing, find it soothing seeing all the creases and wrinkles disappear. Pity I can't use it on my face.

I do my own version of ironing called ‘lazy ironing’. Whack the iron over the front of the flat garment. Nothing else. It takes literally ten seconds but looks as if you bothered.

I ironed uniform once, it looked exactly the same in 3 minutes, never bothered again, life is too short for that shit

youhadmeathello1 i agree with that! When theres been a holiday and the clothes are still filthy on first day back is what I notice more than anything.
I do iron clothes though not everything as some stuff looks fine tshirts/polo shirts rarely do and i run the iron over them quickly.

Depends on the material. I go for the non iron options myself.

Totally get that teachers care more about clothes not being clean and don’t give a feck if it’s ironed or not. Other kids can be little shits though and could use it against the 'un ironed' kid

I iron uniform. It doesn't matter if you don't. I have never once noticed if my dcs friends have ironed or unironed uniform.

I'm guessing here that it depends on the uniform your child wears to school. If my children had gone to schools where they were able to wear the more casual type of uniform with polo shirts and sweatshirts I doubt if I'd have ironed the sweatshirts. My children wore shirts that could only be bought from a particular stockist and they were cotton and definitely needed ironing.

I have 4 DC and I iron their uniform once every blue moon (first day of school or school picture day), that’s about it! They are clean and tidy, hair done etc. I don’t iron my work clothes any more either! I would rather spend my spare time making sure the washing and drying part is done!

The last time I ironed anything was in 1995

This may have been the funniest thing I’ve ever read on mumsnet. The idea that my five year old or his little buddies would even notice whether something is ironed or not, much less use it to bully is just batshit.

We dry everything on a clothes horse and if we do have to iron an item my partner will do it.

LaurieMarlow who said anything about 5 year olds? Not me. This is 7 year old and onwards for the rest of their school years. I’ve seen kids called out for this

Year 2. Never ironed.

Well 7 year olds aren't that much older than 5 year olds and no child I’ve ever met in my life would give a shit about this so I’m struggling to give it any validity.

I don't think people notice. No one has time to notice.

I only iron uniform when I'm putting name tags in. The rear of the time, its straight out of the washing machine and onto the hanger.
I've got about half a dozen things I wouldn't wear without ironing and so hardly ever wear them.

My top tip, have a week off from ironing. Just fold/hang up clothes and put them away. I got most of my Sunday back and for the most part, everything looked fine.

I have intentionally not read the thread.

If a child is happy and well cared for then no one notices the crease. It makes life easier if you tumble clothes!
If not, shake and fold!
Most clothes are anti crease these days.
I prefer a few wrinkles to stinky.

Hope that helps Grin

I haven’t owned an iron for 8 years. I take clothes out of the washer as soon as the cycle finishes, shake out well (with a snap!) and dry on airers. People are always amazed when I own up to this as apparently we never look creased!

I met a woman on the school run moaning about ironing uniforms and I told her I had never done it - she didn't believe me, she was convinced she would have noticed...it was a funny moment - it was as if she'd been conned into wasting time ironing - no one else did it. Kids are now in Year 11 - so that's 12 years of non-ironing and not a word said by anyone. Amongst the blazers that have holes in the elbows with the sleeves too short, maybe a tear across the back, the trousers half mast, the shoes with holes and mud from playing football, the shirt tails hanging out - the un-ironed uniform is barely noticed...and we live in an affluent area - no one cares about school uniform especially not the kids. They do care if you smell though!

I don’t iron. I work full time and have a voluntary commitment that takes up many hours a week. That voluntary commitment is of more benefit to my children than an ironed polo shirt. They go to school in clean tops and trousers everyday. Don’t stress yourself.
