To send my 7 year old to school in unironed uniform?

I really struggle with laundry. I struggle so, so much and I don't know why. I end up just not having the time or being organised enough to put away or iron so my son often goes to primary school in a creased t-shirt. We're not talking slept in creases, just dried crinkled and needs a quick going over creases.

Apart from the creases, my son always goes to school in the correct and washed uniform (I once got up at 5 to hair drier his trousers because I'd forgotton to put a wash on until the night before and that was the only way they'd be dry in time) but ironing always gets the better of me.

We have very few things that need ironing but his school t-shirts do. I bought more expensive iron-free ones but they had the school logo on and got nicked. Strangely his supermarket own brand stuff always finds it's way home.

He's clean, looked after and engaged. We always go to parents evening etc.

Do you look down on parents like me?

I always iron my children's uniform. Most of it is tumble dried so only needs a quick going over. I personally wouldn't send them to school in crinkled clothes. Do I judge when I noticed children in uniform that is really dirty or creased? Not sure I judge but I do notice.

Reallyevilmuffin · 24/04/2019 18:24

I don't iron much, often pretty crinkly

greenpop21 · 24/04/2019 18:28

Just hang to dry and fold. Most uniform doesn't need pressing.

Catsinthecupboard · 24/04/2019 18:30

Can't you get those same shirts but put his name in them?

I don't judge. My parents made me wear ironed clothes and they were lousy parents
I was a sad, well ironed child.

You sound like a kind mother.

My dryer has a "wrinklfree" setting. Its little button has an iron on it.Grin

PLUS I use a dryer sheet if i have a huge load of things that would need ironing.

I used to iron before work, but dh doesn't want his things ironed.

Really, only use iron for important events with nice, dressy clothes.

Nobody should judge over technical difficulties; many worse things than crumpled clothes.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/04/2019 18:32

I work in a primary school and can assure you that I have never noticed the creases, or lack thereof, in a child's uniform...

I've never ironed school uniform except for brand new shirts because they have those weird creases from being in the packaging. Now the DC are teenagers they can do their own if they're fussy!

loz85 · 24/04/2019 18:35

I hate ironing I never do it, I have an iron dry setting on the dryer and chuck anything that needs ironing in there in the mornings, looks fine when I get it out 😂

hamptonmummy · 24/04/2019 18:36

I never iron anything especially school uniform, by the time they have been in school 20mins they are probably dirty or covered in pen marks ! So I don't bother :)

OnMyWhistle · 24/04/2019 18:36

Another one here that only owns an iron to do the kids Hama bead creations. Ironing clothes literally never makes it to the top of my priority list.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 24/04/2019 18:38

Nah it's fine. I don't iron shirts, my daughter wouldn't make it to school without it looking like it hadn't been done anyway. The only thing I iron (if I remember) is the PE T-shirt because it looks manky if I don't, always comes home looking like shit anyway!

louisvootin · 24/04/2019 18:38

*Yabu

I think it looks shabby

It's 2 minutes to iron a t shirt *

i aggree with this i would never send my child out with anything creased it just looks shabby.
tbh i am very paticular about things like and whilst i wouldnt judge you i would notice for sure.

TooBusyHavingFun · 24/04/2019 18:41

stopped years ago, the ironing board is now a mobile window desk Grin

Just not particular about your own spelling. Hmm

op

I don't iron, anything, ever, at all. We survive Smile

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 24/04/2019 18:51

Does your local launderette do a service wash? Take the lot to be washed and dried and start afresh. Sounds like you're overwhelmed OP, be kind to yourself Flowers

vasillisa · 24/04/2019 18:53

Naa. Who said 'life's too short to stuff a mushroom?' Same with ironing. You won't be thinking in years to come, god wish I had spent more time ironing. I don't own one. Apart from interviews/weddings I just think they are a pointless item. Kid clean, fed and happy is most important thing. Hang up clothes to dry and no one will know. Apart from all of us...

louisvootin · 24/04/2019 18:53

TopBitchoftheWitches
yeah my spelling is not the best thank you for pointing that out.

my comment wasnt ment in a nasty way yours was.Hmm

vasillisa · 24/04/2019 18:56

@Cats 'sad, well ironed child', yes, that put's this into perspective. Better rumpled and smiling any day of the week huh? xxx

SunshineCake · 24/04/2019 18:57

There's always someone on threads like this that say What's an iron? Do they really think they are original and funny ?

Mine have gone in without ironed trousers when my system has failed but I think a shirt needs an iron. But that's me and you must do what makes life easier for you. I iron while watching tv so it's not as annoying and also dh does some.

Carol44 · 24/04/2019 19:08

2 sons, clean ironed shirt every day. That's 4,680 ironed shirts !!!!!!!

Aldicheckoutworkout · 24/04/2019 19:10

Like other pps i iron when I'm watching tv in the eve or sometimes take in the garden on a nice day!! Out of interest what di people with no iron do if you're going to a wedding or somewhere quite formal. As my work hours have increased i do iron much less but smart shirts i would find impossible to dry without creases. What is the secret?

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 24/04/2019 19:19

If something needs ironing, I iron it. I try to cut down on it, for example, shirts hung up over night, then ten mins in the drier don't need ironing, but if I couldn't avoid it then I'll iron.
I'd never send my kids to school scruffy and creased or walk around like that myself.
I worked in a school a few years ago and a child used to come in in very creased uniform. There was a social services file on this child ( for other reasons) and the child's appearance was noted. But this was extremely creased and crumpled clothing, not just a few creases.

Youhadmeathello1 · 24/04/2019 19:21

I work in a school and would never notice a few wrinkles! It’s the kids that come in wearing grubby clothes. Especially after a school holiday and they still come back wearing a filthy blazer still covered in food stains.

Feelthethunder · 24/04/2019 19:31

Clean uniform everyday and ironed too, I even iron her summer dress, skirts and pinafores.

I came from a neglected upbringing where I rarely had my uniform washed so for me, my child has to be spick and span for school.

pollymere · 24/04/2019 19:40

You won't get done for neglect over unironed uniform. I'm presuming you put their name in uniform with sharpie. If so, it's annoying. If not, take the time to do it on the t-shirt collar.

madcatladyforever · 24/04/2019 19:46

Oh God who are you people, I don't think I know you any more - don't own an iron WTF!!
I iron socks and duvet covers or I would not sleep at night.

Mindfullness · 24/04/2019 19:50

I used to enjoy ironing my children's uniform and it made me feel good them looking smart. I also think it feels nicer to wear ironed clothes too. I wouldn't judge as such but personally I think creased clothes is not a good look!
