To send my 7 year old to school in unironed uniform?

I really struggle with laundry. I struggle so, so much and I don't know why. I end up just not having the time or being organised enough to put away or iron so my son often goes to primary school in a creased t-shirt. We're not talking slept in creases, just dried crinkled and needs a quick going over creases.

Apart from the creases, my son always goes to school in the correct and washed uniform (I once got up at 5 to hair drier his trousers because I'd forgotton to put a wash on until the night before and that was the only way they'd be dry in time) but ironing always gets the better of me.

We have very few things that need ironing but his school t-shirts do. I bought more expensive iron-free ones but they had the school logo on and got nicked. Strangely his supermarket own brand stuff always finds it's way home.

He's clean, looked after and engaged. We always go to parents evening etc.

Do you look down on parents like me?

mines 14 and have never ironed anything don't see the point. To be fair I make sure they are line dried - shake and hang and her skirts which are pleated get finished off on the aga.

BlueEyedPersephone · 22/04/2019 23:06

Pressed post too soon, you have stated you are anxious, maybe think of ways to calm that and feel peaceful with your choices Thanks

DoubleFunMum · 22/04/2019 23:07

I'm going to go against the grain and say that it does make a difference to someone's appearance. I certainly do notice if someone's clothes don't look pressed. They sit so much better when they are. As a PP said it only takes a minute, why not just do it rather than stress? I sometimes have to do a couple of school t-shirts before work in the morning if I've not had time the night before. People who say clothes look fine without ironing just want to believe that!

FredFlinstoneMadeOfBones · 22/04/2019 23:08

I'm not going to iron clothes that are going to be worn to roll around in mud and climb trees so no I don't iron it! I make sure it's clean and attempt to stop them dribbling their breakfast over it. That's the limit for me.

bumblebee1987 · 22/04/2019 23:09

Ah I've found my people!

Life is too short to iron! My mother in law irons tea towels, who has time for that?! My son's uniform never gets ironed. I don't really see the point, he usually comes home six hours later covered in mud and grass stains anyway. In fact, DH and I have been together 10 years, and we've only owned an iron for the last year, and that was only because my son became a bit addicted to Hama beads, and we needed an iron to complete his creations!

Don't stress about it, there are much more important things in life than ironing Grin

littlebillie · 22/04/2019 23:10

I iron the front Blush only as they aren't allowed to take off the blazer even if it's 30 degrees

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 22/04/2019 23:11

I don't iron either, I tumble dry the school uniform and then put it straight onto hangers while it's still warm and I don't think you can tell. If I haven't got to it in time I still don't usually iron it. Dresses get hung up wet. I do iron PE t-shirts although I'm sure they'll just be shoved back in the bag at the first wear anyway.

RabbitseatDogs · 22/04/2019 23:11

It takes 15 minutes for an ironed item to develop creases. It takes 15 minutes for an ironed item to drop its creases. After 15 minutes the ironed and non ironed children are identical. At 3.30pm no one could care less.

On the (imaginary) checklist for school age children, ironed clothes would be at about 178.
Loved, happy, fed, clean, happy, engaged, loved, happy, loved, fed, happy, clean. I really wouldn't give a second bother about an in ironed shirt.

Smoggle · 22/04/2019 23:12

I've never ironed school uniform either.

I don't care if it looks slightly better ironed - it doesn't look enough better for me to spend any time ironing.

I just take polo shirts out of the washer, shake and hang up.

TickledOnion · 22/04/2019 23:14

I’ve never ironed. I have occasionally forgotten to wash uniform. I have sent DDs to school in shirts that have permanent marker stains on them. I have sent them in uniform that was clean on but then got breakfast or toothpaste down it. They have unruly hair that often looks slightly scruffy and I don’t know how to do fancy french plaits like other mums.
My kids are loved, happy, healthy, given lots of attention at home and doing well at school. I really don’t think the other stuff matters.

drspouse · 22/04/2019 23:15

Don't iron anything here, and my DCs wear cotton only (sensitive skin).

OhTheRoses · 22/04/2019 23:16

Why is it such a problem to organise though? Morning wash on. Evening fold and put away stuff that doesn't need ironing. 10 to 15 mins for that that does assuming your dh wears a formal cotton shirt. Hang the wets. And repeat the following day. Tumbler for towels, pants and nightwear.

RabbitseatDogs · 22/04/2019 23:18

If you took a sample of 100 school children at 3.30pm and asked a random panel to answer a) ironed child or b) non ironed child it would not be correct.

It sounds like you have other reasons for worrying about uniform but your child is happy, don't worry about the ironed shirt. Spend Thursday sorting out your bedroom, even if it's only a corner. Inch by inch.

julensaor · 22/04/2019 23:18

never ever ironed a school uniform before, go easier on yourself! I even buy polo shirts instead of shirts so there are no buttoning up delays in the morning. My daughter has stained her PE top (a heavy sweatshirt type material) with something that is like a big grease blob, I've used vanish on it, can't get it out... she is wearing it come hell or high-water until June. Don't worry, just do what you can.

Fairylea · 22/04/2019 23:20

I never iron. Ever.

Uniform is either shaken out and hung up or tumbled.

RabbitseatDogs · 22/04/2019 23:20

OhTheRoses if only everything were that simple - and every wife saw it as their job to iron their husband's shirts. And that sometimes life didn't get in the way of a 'simple laundry routine'.

ContraryAnn · 22/04/2019 23:24

I haven't ironed anything for 40 years. I fold or hang my clothes right out of the dryer.

famousfour · 22/04/2019 23:25

I iron shirts snd T-shirt’s - it takes about a minute. But can’t say it would make any difference to their education if I didn’t...

Zoflorabore · 22/04/2019 23:26

Going against the grain here but I iron everything, especially school uniform.

Dd is in year 3 and ds is in year 11.
The only thing I don't iron are dd's grey pinafores which have permanent pleats in but as of tomorrow its gingham summer dresses which definitely need an iron.

Dd wouldn't actually care at all but da is immaculate and wouldn't be seen in unironed school uniform. He has friends who have creased clothes and it's very obvious.

I do have diagnosed OCD which means I obsess over cleaning/order/aesthetics etc so something not ironed would really bother me but appreciate that's my problem and nobody else's.
My mum has always ironed everything too. Bedding/tea towels etc are ironed here and I wouldn't sleep in a creased bed. If it looks creased after making it I will run the iron over it directly on the bed.

Runs and hides.....

thatsnotwhatitsusedfor · 22/04/2019 23:29

I don’t iron.

This is what the tumble dryer is for.

Don’t sweat it OP Wink xx

SarahTancredi · 22/04/2019 23:30

I have a laundry routine
I do multiple loads a day.

Between 2 kids I have managed to work out what ti get that just wont need it

Next school shirts are good. Hang up when out the dryer. Dont need ironing

Go for skater style or non pleated skirts . They wash and tumble dry perfectly. No iron required.

Go for the stretchy skinny style next or asda school trousers.

School jumpers never need ironing.

Pe kit gets folded up and stuck in a bag and hung on a peg. Why anyone would waste time ironing that I dont know.

Sports leggings are a God send. Fit better than joggers and never need ironing.

Sure teachers would rather you just read with the kids or made them a half decent packed lunch. Once they have sat on the carpet all morning or thrown their jumpers on the grass for goal posts it all becomes a big fat waste of time anyway

SecretRed · 22/04/2019 23:32

I iron my dc's uniform. I wouldn't feel right not doing so and can see a real difference between ironed and unironed on my kids stuff.
I wouldn't judge anyone who doesn't though. It takes me 2 minutes, I sometimes just give a quick run over on the kitchen worktop. Makes me feel a little more like I've got my shit together!

RabbitseatDogs · 22/04/2019 23:32

I think the pro ironers think us non ironers send our children to school in shrivelled up uniform. Shake, hang, dry.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 22/04/2019 23:35

I'm not sure where my iron is...

Adreamaday · 22/04/2019 23:37

I don't iron uniform, it is not even noticeable once they are wearing it.
