Not to go cycling ten miles in the heat today

We live in the south of UK and been quite hot this weekend.

DH is surprised I was not keen to go on a family cycling trip ten miles today and said I should ask on MN as he feels I am being unreasonable and most would have been happy to do this.

I guess it's what you feel comfortable doing. I'd do it, but then I'd cycle abroad where it's much hotter than this. A leisurely cycle in the sun is enjoyable for me.

Home77 · 22/04/2019 17:02

It's probably me as I find it stressful on the cycle track with the mad fast cyclists!

I would do it.

tenbob · 22/04/2019 17:03

10 miles is an hour at a really sedate pace, so not really different from an hour walk
If you went at a speed to break a sweat, it would be around 40 mins

Fair enough if you didn’t fancy it, but to claim it is too hot to be out for an hour is ridiculous!

Nesssie · 22/04/2019 17:04

Depends what time and speed etc.
I ran 10miles this morning, but at 8am to avoid the heat.

But, if you didn’t want to cycle then you shouldn’t be made to.

FartnissEverbeans · 22/04/2019 17:05

I live in the Middle East and I’ve done a bit of desert running in about 35 degrees plus. It’s tough though, and tiring, and not particularly pleasant. I always worry about sunburn too, although I’ve mostly avoided it so far.

So... yeah you could physically do it, but if you don’t want to and don’t think you’d enjoy it then I don’t see why you should.

Having said that I see London’s in the high twenties today and I think that’s lovely weather for exercise... that’s the temperature at about 6:30am here, when most people go jogging!

swingofthings · 22/04/2019 17:05

Did 35k this morning, in the South, thought the conditions were ideal.

steff13 · 22/04/2019 17:05

How hot is it?

KneelJustKneel · 22/04/2019 17:05

I struggle in the heat so would be with you!

terraform · 22/04/2019 17:06

It's lovely cycling in warm weather, the breeze cools you down! Depends on how fast you go though or how fit you are, I can't be bothered cycling fast in warm weather but it's fine at a more leisurely pace.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 22/04/2019 17:06

I definitely wouldn't be going. I guess I'd probably struggle through if I cycling was my only form of transport and I had somewhere to be but definitely not for fun!

elessar · 22/04/2019 17:08

I've been on a ten mile bike ride today, on mountain bike trails in the woods so lots of steep hills.

It was fine! Actually it was a lovely day to be out.

NewPapaGuinea · 22/04/2019 17:11

10 miles is nothing on a bike. Sun lotion, hydration and the promise of a pub at the end. It’s not even been that hot.

itssquidstella · 22/04/2019 17:19

I'd definitely do it. Mind you, DP and I did 50km from Alcudia to Cap Formentor and back in Mallorca last summer in 32 degree heat, with an elevation gain of about 1900m, so 10 miles isn't much in comparison.

Lazypuppy · 22/04/2019 17:21

Best time to do it, get a great tan as well!

We always stop at a pub for lunch then cycle back.10miles isn't really that far on a bike

Shoxfordian · 22/04/2019 17:27

I wouldn't like doing it but then I don't like cycling

rainbowunicorn · 22/04/2019 17:30

10 miles really isn't very far, even going pretty slowly it would take an hour max. There are loads of people out cycling, running, walking and rollerskating where I live and it is really hot here. The breeze you get as you move would be lovely and cooling as well.

Even at it hottest the UK isn't very hot, plenty of people cycle, run etc in climates much hotter than ours.

PotsOfJoy · 22/04/2019 17:36

Ran 28km this morning, in the New Forest. Pushbike would have been easy.

ForalltheSaints · 22/04/2019 17:39

It was above average temperature today. Please don't refer to 24C as 'hot', though perfectly reasonable of you to choose not to cycle.

Look at some of the daily temperatures on the Tour De France or the Vuelta for example.

CMOTDibbler · 22/04/2019 17:41

It was a lovely temp for cycling today. I did 25 miles, dh and ds did 35 and none of us were very sweaty after

llangennith · 22/04/2019 18:32

Sounds awful! I love cycling but I'm not good at doing activities in the sun.
I envy all those people who enjoy doing things in the sun and heat but I just can't do it.
YANBU.

RevealTheLegend · 22/04/2019 18:36

We’ve just done 12 miles as a family. Including the 7yo.

Cake was involved though.

nopen · 22/04/2019 18:42

I cycled 50k in heat wore than this last summer yabu

Figmentofmyimagination · 22/04/2019 18:47

How flat?! That’s what I’d want to know.

HBStowe · 22/04/2019 18:48

It doesn’t matter what anyone else would or wouldn’t have been happy with! It only matters that you didn’t want to. You’re an adult, it’s up to you what you want to do.
