To say I dislike menstural cups?

MrsFoxPlus4 · 22/04/2019 04:08

Iv tired 4 ranging in prices, from different brands, to different shapes. I done the put in the cup in it quiz.

Iv tried different folds.
Iv turned it inside out.
Iv used lube.
Iv cut the stems & iv left the stems.
Iv tried different positions.

I am relaxed I have zero issues about inserting a cup I really wanted to be able to use one but I always find them extremely difficult to open up inside, I can’t get my finger up “run round the rim” of the cup.

Iv watched all the YouTube videos people try to link you to when you voice you’ve had an issue.

This has been over the last 8 months, they also irritate my vagina and she gets rather unhappy with me, iv had trush more than iv had in my full life. My nurse has said I’d be better off taking a break they aren’t agreeing with my body.

So can people just not get along with menstural cups? Menstural cup users are the new version of militant vegans they cannot comprehend someone dislikes them from my experience!

As much as I agree they are better for the environment which is factual they clearly aren’t for me & I’m giving up trying I don’t have money to throw around for a cup to sit in the bathroom cupboard 😅.

Does anyone else feel the same or have the same issues?

The mooncup is the only sanitary protection I've ever used that doesn't leak. It was life changing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 13:23

Tbh thrush was an issue for me too (despite sterilising the life out of it before, after and during)

Wer you using something like Milton or bleach? That could have caused thrush. There's no need to sterilise mooncups, just keep very clean with a mild soap and a toothbrush kept for that specific purpose.

PCohle · 22/04/2019 13:26

That isn't at all the manufacturer's advice though.

Uugghhh

And what happens if it needs changing in a public khazi

CaptSkippy · 22/04/2019 13:28

It dries out everything in an area that should never be dry and then every slightest bit of movement hurts.

They don't need emptied very often, they hold much more blood than a tampon or towel. But if you do need to empty it, you'd put toilet roll in the toilet, empty the blood on top, wipe the mooncup with toilet paper and put it back in. It's not a problem.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 13:29

I'm sure that's changed, boiling yes, but sterilising tablets I think is a new thing.

Tampons aren't sterilised or sea sponges.

CupcakeDrama · 22/04/2019 13:29

I wouldnt entertain the idea of using one tbh. Ive never used tampons either though. Neither are for me. I only use pads, disposable ones!

wibbleee · 22/04/2019 13:30

i tried menstrual cups. I wanted to love them. But I can`t get on with them! BUT I love the reusable liners though. So I use those with tampons. The reusable liners are soo much comfier and not as sweaty.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 13:30

** in fact I'm sure the advice used to be don't use sterilising tablets as they're likely to irritate.

Smoggle · 22/04/2019 13:33

I've used a mooncup for about 10 years and haven't had an issue, but I'm sure they don't suit everyone.

I just wash it with hot soapy water and boil occasionally, I don't like the idea of steriliser on something that's going up my vagina Grin

I never change it in public toilets.

Also I don't run my finger round the rim, I just twist it to open it up, and pinch the bottom to break the seal and get it out.

KittyWindbag · 22/04/2019 13:33

Mine has been a game-changer and I’m so pleased it worked out for me. It took some getting used to the first month. But totally get why they might not work for others. A weird thing to judge others on.

bluedinosaurroars · 22/04/2019 13:36

I have a lot of scar tissue from a horrific tear that always causes issues anyway but I found that it felt like I was going to tear it all over again when removing the mooncup!

Can anyone recommend decent reusable pads?

PCohle · 22/04/2019 13:36

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/toxic-shock-syndrome-mooncups-tampons-risk-tss-menstrual-america-study-a8314546.html%3famp

Sterilising Mooncups etc. properly is really important. The risk of TSS from sanitary products isn't really from outside bacteria present on Sanpro but from S. aureus already present in the vagina.

CupOhTea · 22/04/2019 13:39

I use Cheeky Mama (already recommenced on here) reusable pads. I like them and they are more comfortable than disposable imo. I don’t like the charcoal top so much and slightly prefer the bamboo. Annoying really, as I bought loads of the charcoal ones! Oh well. There’s not much of a difference.

I’ve found they can slip around a bit, depending on what underwear I wear them with, so am considering buying some period pants (also Cheeky Mama) to go with them.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 22/04/2019 13:42

Same here. I suspect my cervix is high and I struggled to get it in and out. I don't know how anyone can grasp a smooth silicone stem when it's slimy with blood. I could also feel the stem when sitting down (but for above reasons couldn't trim it).
I find the narrative of perseverence a bit of an issue as well, like you owe it to the world to struggle through and if it doesn't work for you you just haven't tried hard enough.
I've used mostly tampons for years but find reusable pads the most comfortable option now. There are downsides (they're expensive initially and there are washing/drying logistics) but they don't irritate my skin and they're so much softer than the plastic disposables.

NannyR · 22/04/2019 13:46

Sterilizing menstrual cups isn't recent advice - I bought a mooncup over ten years ago and just looked at the instruction leaflet that came with it and it recommends boiling or using sterilising solution.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 13:48

Interesting about TSS because the old Mooncup leaflet used to say 'Mooncups are not associated with TSS'

I'd better start sterilising 😂

CupOhTea · 22/04/2019 13:52

I’d always heard menstrual cups did not give you TSS too because “they collect rather than absorbing” blood. I have no idea why that means no TSS, but I’m sure that’s what it said on the packet. Interesting to see that’s possibly not the case...

thefirstmrsdewinter · 22/04/2019 13:52

SerenDippitty I had a similar experience with tampons, when my periods went funny I couldn't predict when it was time to change the tampon, so I was either leaking or chafing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 13:54

CupOhTea yes, it was because Mooncups didn't wick away the blood and upset the balance of the vagina.

Cornettoninja · 22/04/2019 13:54

@damediazepamthedramaqueen (like the name btw Grin)

No I just used to boil and air dry. I think it was the fact I could leave it longer than I ever could a tampon (1-2 hours max really due to heaviness) and my flora must just be vulnerable to it.

I still think they’re a great idea in principle but it just doesn’t appeal to me at all these days.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 13:56

I'm not surprised if it gives you thrush, I wouldn't want to use one either of that was the case !

PCohle · 22/04/2019 13:56

I've got no idea what Mooncup said in the past about it, but their current FAQ makes clear that menstrual cups are associated with a risk of TSS.

BlackCatSleeping · 22/04/2019 13:58

I think a newer study did find a risk of TSS with mooncups.
