I want to hear about your good or bad encounters with a celebrity/famous person please! In the late nineties I met the chef Ainsley Harriot at a London train station when I was cueing to buy a ticket! I was very excited about this and told him I loved the show Ready Steady Cook which he was on at the time, he was really nice and chatty but I didn't get his autograph though! More recently about 2 years ago Ray Winston was sitting at the table beside us in a Chinese restaurant but we didn't get to speak as he was engrossed in conversation. I nearly forgot Todd Carty aka Mark from East Enders used to use our local newsagent in the morning on way to Elstree again in the nineties, he was always very smiley and drove a little MG!

Nelson Mandela is pretty famous for a walk by.

My most notable for example are Peter Powell and Gerard Houllier..

AGoodWench · 22/04/2019 10:51

Oh I have shaken hands with Bobby Charlton, a very lovely man.

woodcutbirds · 22/04/2019 10:55

@thiscannotbenormal oh yes to gushing about Anthony Horowitz. Only met him at a signing but he was so lovely. And his books! I reread one last week.
Forgot:
Lenny Henry - I liked him. Very serious and intellectual. Not the clown he plays at being.
Michael Morpurgo - very theatrical and charismatic
Not exactly 'met' but was in a London cafe the other day and Hugh Dennis was alone working at a nearby table. He looked up, gave me the warmest smile and then went on with his work. He didn't do that sleb thing of sliding his eyes away quickly in case you approach them, but he wasn't attention seeking either. He just looked like a lovely, happy man. Great smile.
I did once accidentally ask Mel Gibson what he was eating as he was at the next table to us in a Chinatown restaurant. It was his food I was interested in - it looked fabulous and I couldn't see anything on the menu that matched it. I didn't even notice it was him until I asked. He looked furious, and didn't answer the question (obviously thought it was a ploy to strike up a conversation) then all the waiters queued up for his autograph and he stormed out shortly afterwards. He was more orange than an oompah loompah.

Duchess of Kent: beautiful and kind.

Lenny Henry: funny, down to earth and a lovely chap

Judi Spiers: I really really hated her on local radio but met her last year when I was playing in a charity concert in aid of a charity she does loads for. She was sitting very close to me. She came over to talk to me in the interval and was utterly charming, warm and kind with a great sense of humour.

SushiTrain · 22/04/2019 11:12

FrangipaniBlue · 22/04/2019 11:15

Germaine Greer in the queue for the ladies toilets in the Emirates Business Class lounge in Dubai airport - very surreal especially as I was jet lagged from a 14hr flight - kicking myself for not asking for a selfie though!

She was hilarious and lovely Smile

SchrodingersBrexit · 22/04/2019 11:21

It seems that everyone always has good experiences with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Cbatothinkofaname · 22/04/2019 11:22

John Craven, many years ago, warm, friendly.
Lenny Henry - lovely, more serious than I’d expected, very genuine, seems like an intelligent guy
Used to see Eddie Redmayne with his wife and first child now and then at a London cafe. Didn’t speak to him as it would have been an intrusion but they seemed very sweet and low key

SchrodingersBrexit · 22/04/2019 11:22

Sorry, pressed send too quickly.

A friend of a friend is friendly with her and has always said she is very down to earth so I'm pleased about that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/04/2019 11:22

Almost forgot - or maybe I've suppressed it - but I was once hugged by Boris Johnson in a London store. The friend I was with knew him (I don't move in such rarefied circles) so introduced me and the next thing I knew he'd enveloped me in a bear hug ... Bleeuurrgghh!!!

And this doesn't really count as "meeting them", but I was in the lift at Fortnum's with my mum and dad as a teenager and Roger Moore got in. This was in his "Persuaders" days and he stood there in his camel coat looking every bit as gorgeous as he did on screen ... my mum never quite got over it

winepls · 22/04/2019 11:23

Had to think long and hard!

Rachel Riley at an awards do - soooo lovely!
Mr Maker post show - absolutely lovely to the kids
Jimmy Doherty at a food show - delightful & v v handsome
Sat next to Lenny Henry at a charity dinner - he was ok, a bit of a piss-taker, you could tell he didn't really want to be there. I preferred his agent John!
Brian Harvey in a bar just as E17 hit the big time - absolute dick & I was gutted as I was 14 & adored him 🙄

LittleMissHappy19 · 22/04/2019 11:31

Gave Mike Tyson a massage once..his wife was extremely rude, possessive and wouldn't leave his side. He on the other hand was really nice (once I got past the overwhelming smell of weed coming from him!)

Stayed in the same hotel as James and Ola Jordan..spoke to them numerous times, they were both very nice.

On a flight recently, that Georgia 'Toff' was on. She was horrendous, to say the least! Everybody else on the flight had reserved their seats, her and her friend didn't..meaning on boarding the plane, the biggest kick off!! Demanding other people to move, so her and her friend could sit next to each other! The staff refused to move anybody else to accommodate her! She ended up sitting next to an elderly man, while her friend was no where to be seen, her seat was that far away Grin I felt dreadfully sorry for the elderly man, as the whole flight all we heard was her whinging 'how it's not acceptable..blah blah blah!'

Buster72 · 22/04/2019 11:34

I shook sir Clive Woodward's hand at meghan's wedding last year, very nice guy.
I also met Ore Odube at the same event.

SchrodingersBrexit · 22/04/2019 11:38

@Buster72 were you at the wedding? Shock

coshol · 22/04/2019 11:40

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Much shorter than I’d imagined! Nice man.
Cindy Crawford in her modelling heyday, she was very polite and very beautiful.
Pierce Brosnan: He was suave and self deprecating. Lovely man.
Lots of footballers.
Adam Driver, oh my goodness he’s absolutely gorgeous, very tall, dark, with the most beautiful big brown eyes. He also has a voice to die for. Really lovely man. Yes, I fangirled internally.

Triglesoffy · 22/04/2019 11:41

I worked with her in a professional capacity and she is lovely. My OH sent me a message to say that my dog had been run over so I started to cry and she gave me a hug. This was before she got married.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 22/04/2019 11:54

Elaine C Smith, Steve Davis wife, Paul Le Guen (sp), Charlie Adam (Scottish footballer), all mer through work. I also met Sharleen Spiteri and she was absolutely lovely and down to earth.

ahtellthee · 22/04/2019 12:19

I met Martin from coronation street up Mount Everest. We drank a few beers together again on the last night before flying back to Kathmandu (he told me it was his wedding anniversary) and had a thoroughly enjoyable night.

ahtellthee · 22/04/2019 13:01

@Buster72 did you attend the royal wedding ?

MadisonAvenue · 22/04/2019 13:11

Really pleased to read that people found Sir Bobby Charlton to be lovely, he's someone who I admire a lot.

That's reminded me that I met Sir Bobby Robson on a car park in Newcastle ( I was getting out of our car and he was just returning to his car which was parked next to us). He was so lovely, an absolute gentleman.

saj90 · 22/04/2019 13:27

Billy Connolly - kind hearted lovely man.
Judi Dench - complete honour to meet her, such a fantastic person.
Helen Mirren - couldn't have been nicer.

LakieLady · 22/04/2019 14:03

Lots of politicians: Tony Benn, Michael Foot, Denis Healey, Jeremy Corbyn, John Bercow, all of whom were lovely, Ken Livingstone (a bit up himself, but funny and witty), David Blunkett (very up himself), Norman Lamont (unspeakably rude) and Kenneth Baker (very polite and pleasant). Also Glenys Kinnock, who is fab (the Labour party elected the wrong Kinnock as leader, imo).

I met Alan Bennett on the tube once, he was very shy. Mark Williams lives near me, and is utterly lovely: very polite and friendly with 2 equally polite little girls. We were in a pub garden when he came over and asked if the girls could say hello to our dogs, and we chatted a bit. I knew his face from somewhere and thought I knew him (I'm shit at names and faces) and DP pissed himself laughing afterwards. He always says hello when our paths cross now.

I may have met Lenny Henry. I've seen a man in Waitrose who looks just like him, and when I accidentally rammed him with my trolley the other day, and apologised, he sounded just like him too. So, if Lenny Henry has moved to Sussex, I think I've met him.
