To smoke in my own garden

I am a smoker. I smoke 10 fags a day and I'm not planning on giving it up yet (one day!).

In smoke in my garden, I've got two neighbours either side and one every time I'm smoking will come out and say 'it stinks out here' and will start to cough loudly.

It's really getting on my nerves, I can't move down the end of the garden because it's tiny and would make no difference at all but AIBU to hate the passive aggressive comments when I'm smoking in my garden?

If they had something in their garden that stank and had health implications for you, how would you feel about them brazenly doing it up to 10 times a day?

Cloglover · 22/04/2019 18:18

I've had some pretty sh*t neighbours over the years, so one having 10 fags a day wouldn't ruffle my feathers too much. As annoying as it is for a non smoker, I would put a positive spin on it by being glad you're not smoking in your house. Rollies smell less than cigarettes so could that be a compromise (and help you on the road to giving up)

hocking123 · 22/04/2019 18:19

get a vape they smell great. And cut down to a couple of cigarettes

pollymere · 22/04/2019 18:22

I'd be fine with it, as long as my washing wasn't out. Being further down the garden might stop the smell wafting into their actual house I guess. Why don't you smoke indoors though? Burn citronella outdoor candle or tealights maybe when you're out there?

QueenBeex · 22/04/2019 18:23

You have every right to smoke in your garden, as and when you want.
^^^^^^^

pollymere · 22/04/2019 18:24

Potted Bush. Lol.

Mummyontherocks · 22/04/2019 18:38

Can't you vape? Then it won't be an unpleasant smell you are inflicting on your neighbours and your kids. If you're not sure is you want to give up then try reading Alan Carr's Easy Way to Give Up Smoking. It takes you through all the pros and cons and you decide if and when you want to give up.

Ellenborough · 22/04/2019 18:42

'I would hate to live next door to you. I couldn’t bare having to smell that in my garden. I cough and wave the smoke away when some inconsiderate fucker walks past me smoking and I get a face full 🤮🤢Do you know how bad it is for a non smoker?'

Alright, princess!!

This attitude is so typical of smokers. Person 1 (smoker) gets to inflict their disgusting toxic shit on others who'd really rather avoid it and it's absolutely fine but person 2 (non-smoker) dares to react to it and they are the princess! Hmm

It just goes to show that you really don't know how bad it is for a non-smoker. You have no idea. And you clearly don't care anyway.

Rented house next to me. Both adults and visiting family smoked outdoors. The two adults used a small table and chairs with large ashtray for their disgusting, unhealthy habit. This was located just below my bathroom window and the smell of smoke permeated all through the top of my house and drifted all over the garden near where my backdoor was. It became so bad I went around feeling nauseous for says on end before I realised it was the smell of the cigarette smoke making me feel ill. I managed to hang out my bathroom window one day and photographed the filled ashtray. Sent picture to landlord. Tenants were given notice to leave. Wonderful clean smelling atmosphere now. You are causing a horrible smell to drift over to other people subjecting them to your chemical pollution so you deserve the passive aggressive comments. Do you ever ask a non smoker you know what you smell like? If they are honest you won't like the answer.

Jellicoe · 22/04/2019 19:09

You obviously have the right to smoke in your garden. Perhaps the middle ground is not not do it when you know they are there. Or have the balls to shout over an apology about the smoke

LouH1981 · 22/04/2019 19:10

YANBU because it’s your garden. It’s tricky.
As a non-smoker with a small child though it would massively annoy me.
I wouldn’t want your dangerous, poisonous smoke in mine or my sons lungs while we were out in our own garden.
I don’t think there is much either of you can do about it unless she moves one day or you decide to give up.

squeekums · 22/04/2019 19:29

Ignore them and chuck on some music when you go out. Drown them out
Sure they may not like the smoke but it's your yard.
Your free to smoke it in AND play music lol

Cbatothinkofaname · 22/04/2019 19:33

Only 10 a day? You’re an amateur OP. Up it to 50 a day. Thanking you for choosing to contribute extra tax to the govt coffers. More money to go round for the rest of us

NameChangeNugget · 22/04/2019 19:35

The facts are you’re a drug addict, polluting over peoples land with your smell. Smoke in your house with the windows shut, or better still, quit

Holdmydrink · 22/04/2019 19:38

I used to live in a flat, and every time I opened my window or balcony doors after work, my next door neighbour's smoke would drift right in.

It was disgusting and used to make my house smell of smoke too.

So while I agree with many, who said, it's your garden. Your choices are affecting others. If I played loud music, or spent all night talking on my balcony, that'd affect them. If you choose to live in close proximity to other people, the decent thing to do is try to all get along. If your smoke to affecting them, do it in you own home.

Greenwichgirl25 · 22/04/2019 19:43

Not sure if you've seen the research on this, but smoking outdoors does not stop you risking your children's health from smoking. Nicotine and a while lot of other pretty carcinogenic chemicals come back in with you and your kids inhale them from your clothes.

Bumblebeesmum · 22/04/2019 19:50

I think them coughing and making comments in the privacy of their own garden hurts your ears a lot less than your smoke hurts their noses and lungs. So yes you’re being unreasonable.

I don’t let my kids play in our own garden when the neighbour is out their chain smoking because it’s so strong even their friends have commented on the smell of their clothes. Totally revolting. If you don’t care about them enjoying their garden why should they care about you enjoying yours?

Bumblebeesmum · 22/04/2019 19:54

Are you standing right by the door so they can’t even walk in to their garden without inhaling your fumes? Not to mention when it’s sunny they probably can smell it from inside their own house. The solution might be as simple as standing at the other end of your garden. You can enjoy it & they aren’t forced to inhale it?

Bumblebeesmum · 22/04/2019 20:03

I’m surprised by some of the responses here - someone in their own garden doesn’t like the stink of smoke so the OP should blare out loud music & make life more unpleasant for them ??? Riight because that definitely sounds like a reasonable neighbour everyone would be happy to live near.

Also “I'm asthmatic, but am pretty sure I'll survive” is a strange comment - my husband is asthmatic & one attack triggered by an allergen (of our own doing) nearly killed him & had him hospitalised for a week. Asthma isn’t something I’d have brought up in relation to this post as all sorts of reasonable lifestyles can cause attacks - owning cats etc but I just found the statement a bit bizarre.

OP I think you should be the bigger person & stand somewhere less unpleasant for them. I do think they’ve been passive aggressive & should have either said nothing or spoken to you politely - but I don’t recommend following the advice of going to war when it wouldn’t be too difficult to just have everyone happy & able to enjoy their own gardens again.

GabsAlot · 22/04/2019 20:40

i hate the anti smoking brigade your evil if your smoke replies on here

GabsAlot · 22/04/2019 20:42

oh and by the way if you dont want posionous smoke in your kids lungs dont walk down the street -ever

its more polluted with cars than all cigarettes combined

MojoPin · 22/04/2019 20:42

No darling, people are just trying to subtly point out the ridiculous hypocrisy.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 22/04/2019 20:48

My ndn used to smoke literally the other side of the fence to my washing line....so my nice clean washing got the smell of fags which l can't bear. Yes it is your garden but they are allowed to hate the smell of someone else's addiction especially as it could pose a health risk. Sorry can't sympathise on this one.

GabsAlot · 22/04/2019 20:50

i cant believe a pp got someone evicted over smoking in their garden-what a nasty prick

AllesAusLiebe · 22/04/2019 20:57

Some of these comments! Blush

Carry on, OP, you’re doing nothing wrong and your neighbours are assholes. This would actually encourage me to smoke more. Maybe next time try and strike up a polite conversation and lean over the fence with your cigarette just to get them really irate. Ha ha.
