To smoke in my own garden

LittleBear4 · 21/04/2019 16:54

I am a smoker. I smoke 10 fags a day and I'm not planning on giving it up yet (one day!).

In smoke in my garden, I've got two neighbours either side and one every time I'm smoking will come out and say 'it stinks out here' and will start to cough loudly.

It's really getting on my nerves, I can't move down the end of the garden because it's tiny and would make no difference at all but AIBU to hate the passive aggressive comments when I'm smoking in my garden?

About 80% of the staff at the nursery DD attends clearly smoke, doesn’t bother me

ShockShockShock urgh that’s hedious

Poor children! I bet those smoking nursery workers don’t change their clothes and wash thoroughly and wait 30 mins before coming back in to look after the children after every cigarette (you continue to breath out toxic fumes for a good 30 mins after each cig therefore everyone you breathe on is inhaling second hand smoke)

I used to be a nurse and thought it hideous when HCPs would sneak off on shift for a fag and then come back to look after (and breathe all over) patients who often were suffering from nausea....
Why would anyone send their child to this nursery?! Envy (not envy)

Absofrigginlootly · 21/04/2019 21:23

Oh and YABU and selfish.

But this is MN where everyone can do what they please and sod everyone else.

A little consideration in life goes a long way

Teaonthebedsheets · 21/04/2019 21:24

Could you just go out the front? My neighbour used to do this, even when we had our newborn's washing outside. I pointed out that we had the baby's washing out - how totally vile - and he now smokes out the front, where it doesn't bother anyone. Second hand smoke is a big risk factor for SIDS so I was really pissed off to be honest, his garden but not his right to have that kind of impact on my family.

Yesicancancan · 21/04/2019 21:24

Smoke out front, it wouldn’t be all year. In the winter they probably won’t use the garden

stucknoue · 21/04/2019 21:27

Smoking in the garden (unless you have serious acreage) is so annoying to the neighbours. My neighbour smokes and at least she walks to the bottom of the garden. Why should we have to inhale your second hand smoke? If you don't like the comments you know what you need to do (and your lungs will thank you)

Emily1091 · 21/04/2019 21:29

Why would you think you have the right to police what they can and can't say in their own garden?
Same applies for her smoking, if she wants to smoke in her back garden she will as long as she’s not flicking her tabs ends over their fence or flicking ash in their garden then they are being over dramatic if you ask me.

Ratatatouille · 21/04/2019 21:30

Well obviously YABU. You can do what you like in your garden and so can your neighbours. You are choosing to do something that is very unpleasant and potentially harmful to them, whilst they are merely making a few snarky comments.

The bigger issue is being a smoker when you are a parent. Third hand smoke is real. You are exposing your children to thousands of deadly chemicals on a daily basis. The fact that you smoke outside does not prevent this. Your children are also significantly more likely to become smokers in the future than children of non-smokers, and therefore at greater risk of developing smoking related disease. If you don’t care about your neighbours then that’s one thing, but your children need you to stop.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 21/04/2019 21:36

I th8nk it’s worth remembering that we are all around smoking far less than we used to be and so people aren’t as used to the smell as they were, and so it seems way more vile than it might have 10 or 15 years ago when everyone had to put up with it everywhere.

It’s jusy so noticeable these days. If I find myself walking behind a smoker (which in itself is very rare these days) I have to cross the road or get ahead of them because the smell makes me feel sick. Didn’t used to care at all.

If the gardens are all so tiny it’s not like the neighbours can get away from it when you’re out there but I do think you should make every effort to be considerate and so still go right to the end of the garden. If nothing else it shows you know they don’t like it and are doing everything you can to minimise the impact on them.

I hope you recover from your trauma soon and can move on with your life Flowers.

SeaShells31 · 21/04/2019 21:58

YABU! The smell stinks so they have a right to complain. I agree you are a hypocrite. I’d hate to be living next to a smoker!

BMW6 · 21/04/2019 22:00

Get a trampoline OP.
Inhale at the bounce and exhale at the apex so your smoke goes high up above their heads.
You'll get fit and lose weight too - what's not to like!

Some arsey miseryguts would be on here in short order moaning that she was a danger to bird life.

PJ67 · 21/04/2019 22:14

I wouldn't like to be your neighbour as I hate the smell of smoke but equally it's your right to smoke in your garden. Is it possible for you to go out the front door to smoke rather than into the garden?

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 21/04/2019 22:19

*The only way to escape other people is to live on a remote island!(

Then they'd complain about the smell of muck spreading, sheep, cows, pigs, horses and farming noise and red diesel and their anti-social hours. They're also usually allowed to burn garden refuse.

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 21/04/2019 22:24

One of the nosiest, smelliest places I ever lived was across a road from a pig farm. Good god! I'd grown up in a big city but that noise and honk were unbelievable. Gone 5am and that farm was fully awake. We farmed vegetables and were up as he was. 'Get up!' and tractor motors and quad bikes churning up and spewing out. And in Spring and Summer they didn't quit until around 10 or 11.

CantStopMeNow · 21/04/2019 22:25

Just reply back - "not as much as your attitude" each time.

You have every right to smoke in your own back garden - just like others have every right to have a bbq in their garden even though it stinks....drive cars even though their fumes stink......

Hopeygoflightly · 21/04/2019 22:25

Give up, that would be my solution. Win-win all round.

CantStopMeNow · 21/04/2019 22:27

Try living near a vinegar factory, not noisy but oh my god the smell was something vile - esp in summer!

MoreCookiesPlease · 21/04/2019 22:34

Best reply ever.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 21/04/2019 22:36

I have this problem with my neighbour. I have to keep our back windows closed during the summer because his smoke will come through into our flat. I also can't go into my garden when he's out there smoking because it makes me cough (I have asthma).

I've not said anything because he is in his garden however I do see the other side of it.

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 21/04/2019 22:43

Ew, I can imagine! French farmers smoking was the least of it, the livestock were making an almighty racket, the pong and dust unbelievable. I walk long routes and tent camp on farms. You never need an alarm clock and the pong would probably choke most MNers. In the last weeks of May they are readying their livestock for market and the dust and stench and noise is tremendous. I can pick out the smell of red diesel. The countryside is incredibly anti-social.

SaltSpoon · 21/04/2019 22:44

Have you considered changing to a vape?

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 21/04/2019 22:45

Townies are hilarious.

KissingInTheRain · 21/04/2019 22:47

Yeah, and?

I used to live next to a stink bomb factory. On the other side was a sewage works and opposite was a giant incinerator plant.

But my god the neighbours’ trampoline used to piss me off.

Dodie66 · 21/04/2019 22:53

I live in a terraced house and have smokers both sides who smoke in their gardens. In the summer I’m always having to shut doors and windows, they also have barbecues too. Horrible and it spoils summre

ILoveMaxiBondi · 21/04/2019 22:57

It said remote island, not farm! Grin Grin Grin
